Chapter 239 - Chapter 2: The Day the Knight Refused to Lean Forward

"New guy?"

The bald police officer looked confused.

"Yeah?" Morin raised an eyebrow, pulled out his badge, and showed it to him.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing. One of our own then." The bald officer squinted at it, confirmed it was real, and immediately dropped the idea of impounding the vehicle.

"I'm Duke. Duke Hans. Nice ride you've got there!"

"..."

Morin fell silent.

He vaguely remembered that a long time ago, in some spy-movie world, he'd worked at the IRS. When he first started, there'd also been a bald colleague named Duke.

So... everyone named Duke eventually goes bald?

"Morin, right?" Duke was clearly enthusiastic. "I'll take you there!"

"Are you a motorcycle enthusiast too?"

"Of course," Morin said without hesitation.

A blatant lie.

Morin liked cool things, but calling himself an enthusiast was pushing it.

Strictly speaking, he was more of a supercar enthusiast.

"That's great! I knew it!" Duke walked ahead, grinning as he talked nonstop.

"I could tell from the sound of your Kawasaki. Definitely modified, and well maintained, right?"

"But don't worry, we're police. No one will hassle you. Just need to register it... Oh right, you already repainted it beforehand, didn't you? Nice. Makes things easier."

Duke kept chattering the whole way.

"This place has the most motorcycle enthusiasts in the world! You came at the perfect time. In two days, the world's greatest stunt rider is coming-multiple world records holder, Ghost Rider Johnny!"

"We can go watch him perform. I heard he's challenging a new record this time!"

"Is that so?" Morin looked interested.

"My info's a bit outdated. Didn't know about that. This Johnny... is he really that good?"

"Good?" Duke looked offended.

"He's terrifyingly strong! If Johnny says he's number two, no one on earth would dare claim number one!"

He spoke like he was talking about himself.

"Now you've really got my attention," Morin replied calmly, playing along.

Of course Johnny was the strongest stunt rider.

As the host of the Spirit of Vengeance, Ghost Rider had an immortal body.

He could do whatever he wanted.

"Duke, are you talking about your Johnny again?" the officer at the registration desk laughed.

"He's a motorcycle enthusiast like me!" Duke snapped.

"Not like you guys!"

"We'd love to be enthusiasts too," another officer teased, "if you could ever ride past a hundred miles an hour."

"I've hit a hundred before!" Duke argued.

"Sure, sure." The officer smiled and looked at Morin.

"This is...?"

"I'm-" Morin started.

"This is Morin!" Duke cut in proudly.

"The new officer! Motorcycle enthusiast! Owns a Kawasaki H2R!"

Why he was proud of that, Morin had no idea.

The other officers clearly weren't surprised.

One of them looked straight at Morin.

"You didn't agree to lend Duke your bike, did you?"

"Uh... no?" Morin shook his head.

"That's good..."

Several officers sighed in relief.

"Don't ever agree."

"How can you be like this?!" Duke flushed red.

"You don't trust my skills!"

"You've wrecked three police motorcycles already," a calm voice said.

A man in uniform walked over.

"Chief," the officers greeted.

"Morning," the chief said, patting Duke, who looked wronged.

"One more thing. If this keeps up, even if we have the budget, we won't give you another bike. This is for your own safety."

"Nooo!" Duke looked ready to hug his leg.

"No discussion. One last chance," the chief said flatly.

He took a sip of coffee, then turned to Morin and offered his hand.

"You're the new officer? Morin, right?"

"Yes." Morin smiled and shook his hand.

"I hear you've got a Kawasaki H2R?" the chief asked.

"You like motorcycles?"

"Yes. I'm a motorcycle enthusiast."

"Perfect." The chief visibly relaxed, glanced at the now-petrified Duke, and looked at Morin with hope.

"We need a motorcycle patrol officer. Speeders, traffic handling."

"You've got real skills, right?"

Morin: "..."

Just how bad was Duke?

And in a station this big, not a single decent rider?

He complained internally, then nodded confidently.

"Of course."

"That's great!" The chief still looked slightly wary-Duke had left scars-but decided anyway.

"At this point, even if you weren't, it can't go to him."

"Get his paperwork done," he ordered, patting Morin's shoulder.

"Catch those speeders, and I'll apply for a reward."

Morin's eyes lit up.

Experience points were experience points.

As long as he hadn't hit master level yet, he took them seriously.

Now that woke him up.

"Morin, got your documents?" the registration officer asked.

"Of course." Morin pulled out his ID, badge, and motorcycle papers.

The officer registered everything, then paused.

"This... isn't a Kawasaki. This is a Ducati Diavel."

"Hm?" Morin looked.

"Oh. Grabbed the wrong one."

He calmly put it away and took out another set from his system space.

The system was always reliable.

Any vehicle transformed via [Police Universal Vehicle] came with matching documents.

"You even have a Ducati Diavel?!" Duke rushed over, eyes shining.

"You're rich!"

He clearly wanted to ask to borrow it-then stopped himself.

At least he knew his limits.

"It's nothing," Morin smiled.

In this world, he only had a hundred thousand dollars.

For now.

With his abilities, money was never a real issue.

"Don't lend him your bike," the officer warned immediately, handing Morin the documents and a police light.

"I didn't even ask!" Duke protested.

"I'm being preemptive."

Their relationship was clearly close.

This kind of exchange had obviously happened many times.

As a newcomer, Morin had two days to familiarize himself with rules, rewards, and punishments.

No rush to work.

Duke, free for the moment, took Morin around and explained everything.

Morin listened leisurely.

It had to be said-Duke truly lived up to his reputation as a motorcycle enthusiast.

He knew almost every type of bike in detail.

Real knowledge, not surface-level.

"So what they said earlier... was it true?" Morin asked casually.

If Duke knew this much yet couldn't hit a hundred, something had to be wrong.

Morin had already checked his body.

Nothing abnormal.

Reading memories would've answered it instantly, but Morin didn't do that without reason.

Knowing too much was boring.

And respect mattered.

"It's just..." Duke's eyes dimmed.

"Some things from the past. I get hurt very easily when riding fast."

"So I'm extra careful. I don't dare go too fast."

"But you still like motorcycles?" Morin raised an eyebrow.

Liking bikes but fearing speed?

For enthusiasts, wasn't speed half the joy?

So... this one didn't lean forward.

That was good.

The day a knight leans forward is the day Hua Tuo shakes his head.

At least it was safe.

Morin teased silently.

Aloud, he asked, "Psychological?"

"Did something happen?"

"Nothing," Duke shook his head.

"It's just... when I go fast, the bike breaks, or something goes wrong."

"Luckily I always survive."

"But as a traffic officer, sometimes I have to go fast."

"So... three bikes totaled."

"Maybe I'm just not meant for it."

He sighed.

"If nothing's happening now," Morin said, "why don't you show me?"

"Maybe I can figure it out."

He was genuinely curious.

An inability to go fast for unknown reasons?

In a world with supernatural elements, curses were a possibility.

But Morin didn't use magic or activate the [Eye of Justice].

Guessing was more fun.

"Really?" Duke lit up.

"You'll lend me your bike?"

"Lend?" Morin repeated.

"When did I say that?"

"Don't you have one?"

"I broke all the police bikes!"

Morin: "..."

Now he understood why the chief had been so eager.

There were no bikes left.

"I thought you only broke three?"

"We only have three," Duke said helplessly.

"I see." Morin nodded.

"So... you'll lend it?" Duke's eyes shone again.

"Of course not. I just understand the station's size now."

They reached the entrance.

Morin installed the police light and mounted the Kawasaki.

"So how do I show you?" Duke asked, confused.

"Simple." Morin turned on the light and engine.

"My paperwork's done."

"I'll go catch a speeder."

"You wait here."

"I'll bring a few bikes back."

He twisted the throttle.

The engine roared.

In seconds, the bike hit a hundred kilometers per hour and vanished.

"Wait! You don't even know where the speeders are!" Duke shouted.

"They're hard to catch!"

(This chase lasted an entire day.)
