Chapter 52 - The Premiere

The next two days passed in a haze of gentle, unprecedented domesticity. The cavernous penthouse, once a symbol of Kaelen's gilded cage, began to feel like a home. They cooked dinner together, their movements an easy dance in the large kitchen. Kaelen found herself helping Iris build an elaborate, gravity defying tower of blocks. It was a fragile, beautiful peace, a glimpse of a life Kaelen had never dared to imagine.

On Wednesday evening, after they had tucked a sleepy Iris into bed, Sera found Kaelen on the balcony, looking out at the glittering expanse of the city. She came to stand beside her, a thoughtful, hesitant expression on her face.

"I, um… have something I need to attend," Sera began, her voice quiet. "This Friday."

Kaelen turned to her, giving her her full attention. "Okay. What is it?"

"It's a film premiere. A gala," Sera explained, her gaze distant as she recalled a different life. "The last movie I starred in. I finished filming it just a few months before… before everything. It feels like a lifetime ago. I wasn't going to go, but my contract requires an appearance."

Kaelen could see the conflict in her eyes the reluctance to revisit a past that was now tinged with so much pain.

"You don't have to go alone," Kaelen said softly.

Sera's gaze snapped to hers, and a flicker of hope ignited in her eyes. "That's the thing," she said, her voice gaining a bit of strength. "It's my last tie to that life, to the person I was. And I don't want it to be another ghost. I want to reclaim it." She took a deep breath, her expression a mixture of nervousness and raw vulnerability. "I want you both there with me. I want Iris to see it, to see something her mom made. And I want you by my side. Everyone there will see us as part of a business arrangement. It's time they saw us as partners."

The request hit Kaelen with the force of a physical blow. A premiere. A red carpet. Cameras, reporters, and the ruthless, watching eyes of high society. After Alban's attack, the idea of stepping into such a massive, public spotlight was insane. Her every protective instinct screamed NO. It was a declaration of war against her family, a public refutation of everything she was supposed to represent.

[SYSTEM ALERT: Attending a high profile public event with [Seraphina Vesper] and [Iris Vesper] carries a 92% probability of direct confrontation with antagonists [Magnus Blackwood] and [Cassian Blackwood]. Evasion is the recommended course of action.]

The System's cold logic was undeniable. The risk was enormous. But Kaelen looked at Sera's face at the hope warring with years of pain and the System's warning felt irrelevant. Sera wasn't asking her to fight a battle. She was asking Kaelen to share her life. She was trusting her not just with her safety, but with her past and her dreams.

She was operating without a script now. And that meant she was free to choose. She could choose the logical, safe path of evasion, or she could choose this, the terrifying, beautiful, uncertain path with the woman she was falling in love with.

It wasn't a choice at all.

"Of course," Kaelen said, her voice unwavering as she took Sera's hand. "We'll be there."

The relief that washed over Sera's face was so profound it nearly brought Kaelen to her knees. This was what it felt like to build a future, not just survive a plot.
