Chapter 67 - Trying to change fate

Kaelen's vow to defy fate was not a quiet, internal promise. It was a declaration of war, and the first casualties were normalcy and peace. In the days that followed her grim discovery, the atmosphere in the penthouse shifted from a warm, domestic haven to a high security command center. Kaelen, driven by a silent, consuming terror only she understood, began to wrap her family in a suffocating blanket of protection.

The first change came on Monday morning. When Sera and Iris came down for breakfast, their usual driver, a pleasant Beta named Henderson, was gone. In his place stood two stern faced, powerfully built Alphas in discreet but obviously tactical suits. The familiar town car had been replaced by a new, top of the line armored sedan whose windows were tinted to a near black opacity.

Iris looked at the imposing vehicle, her excitement about school dimming. "Why is Mr. Henderson not driving us anymore? And why does the new car have such tiny windows?"

Sera's eyes narrowed, her gaze finding Kaelen, who stood by the door, her face a stoic mask. "Kaelen, what is this?" she asked, her voice low and tight. "You didn't tell me you were changing the security detail."

"After what happened with Alban's men, I'm not taking any chances," Kaelen stated, her tone leaving no room for argument. "Our previous security was adequate. This is superior. It's a necessary precaution."

"A precaution?" Sera's voice rose slightly. "Kaelen, this is a military grade escort for a trip to a second grade classroom. You're scaring her." Her eyes met Kaelen's, a silent plea added: You're scaring me.

But Kaelen's paranoia was a fire that could not be quenched. Her new security protocols began to bleed into every corner of their lives. She had all of their food deliveries re routed through a private lab to be screened for contaminants. She attempted to have the new security team perform a daily sweep of Iris's classroom, a move that was only stopped by a frantic, angry call from Sera. The penthouse security systems were upgraded again, with new biometric scanners and motion sensors, turning their home into a fortress that was beginning to feel indistinguishable from a prison.

The happy, carefree planning for Iris's birthday party became a tense negotiation.

"No, Kaelen," Sera said, her voice strained with frustration as they reviewed the party arrangements one evening. "We cannot have the party magician's background checked for ties to corporate espionage. He makes balloon animals for a living."

"He's a stranger we're bringing into our home," Kaelen countered, her voice cold and logical. "Every variable must be controlled."

The two weeks leading up to the birthday were a slow, grinding battle of wills. Kaelen, consumed by her secret knowledge, saw potential threats in every shadow. Sera, fighting to give her daughter a normal, happy childhood, saw the woman she loved being consumed by a nameless, obsessive fear.
