Tomas Wei stood at the edge of Corridor Three with his hands full of numbers that didn't add up.
The morning sun laid long shadows across the terraced fields — three broad strips of cleared earth that cut through the southern approach like fingers reaching toward the valley floor. Corridors One and Two stretched behind him, neat rows of turned soil already showing the faintest green haze where fast-germination grain had broken the surface in two days. Turnips and carrots had been pushed into the deeper beds by teams that worked until their hands cramped and then worked some more.
