Day Eight.
Marcus finished the fifth relay communicator at three in the morning, soldered the final formation crystal into its copper housing, and set it beside the other four on the workshop bench. Five identical boxes. Five ugly, imperfect, life-saving devices. Two more to build. Twelve days of work compressed into his hands and the dark circles under his eyes.
The relay pillars were easier — Silas had assigned two formation teams to carve them in shifts, man-height stone columns with crystal crowns that pulsed blue when activated. Fifteen of twenty-one completed. The remaining six would be finished by Day Ten.
