Chapter 20 – Oath and Journey

Sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting dappled beams over the quiet elven settlement.

The whispers from the night before had yet to fade. The birth of Kaelen and Lyraine had changed everything.

Valdyn, once regarded as just another young prince, now stood at the center of his people's fate.

But behind admiration lurked fear. If word of the twins spread beyond the forest, it would not remain only among elves. Humans, orcs, beastmen—perhaps even beasts themselves—would see them as a threat.

---

Valdyn sat upon a wooden bed in his private pavilion. Sylwen rested at his side, her body still weak but her expression peaceful. In her arms, the twins slept soundly, their breaths soft and steady.

Valdyn studied them closely, memorizing every delicate feature. His fingers brushed Kaelen's brow, then Lyraine's. Again he felt the warmth of their bond, both a gift and a burden.

"Valdyn…" Sylwen's voice was faint, almost a whisper.

He turned, meeting her silver eyes, shimmering with both fear and hope.

"No matter what happens outside," she murmured, "promise me one thing… Don't let anyone take our children. I don't care if the world burns."

Valdyn clasped her hand firmly. "I swear it. As long as I draw breath, no one will touch Kaelen or Lyraine. They are our future—and the future of our people."

Tears welled in Sylwen's eyes, but this time they carried relief, not despair. "Those words… are enough for me."

---

The next day, Valdyn was summoned to the Root Hall. The elders had gathered, their faces stern and calculating. Queen Serenea sat upon her high chair, her gaze sharp, probing deeper than usual.

"Valdyn," one elder began, "with the birth of Kaelen and Lyraine, you are no longer merely a prince. You are the center of our hope. But hope without strength is only a burden. What will you do next?"

Valdyn met their eyes one by one. "The elves cannot remain hidden in the forest forever. We must unite—Forest Elves, Dark Elves, even the Snow Elves. So long as we are divided, we will be devoured piece by piece."

Outrage erupted.

"Dark Elves? They despise us!"

"Snow Elves deny our very existence!"

"This is madness!"

Queen Serenea raised her hand. Silence fell at once.

"Yet he speaks truth. Division is poison. The ancestors have opened this path, and his bloodline proves it."

Her gaze bore into Valdyn. "If you take the first step, where will you go?"

"To the west," Valdyn said firmly. "The shadowed forest. The Dark Elves still live. If I can convince them, it will be the beginning."

--

At that moment, the cold voice echoed in his mind:

Valdyn's lips curved slightly. So this is the next step…

That afternoon, Valdyn gathered the young elves who had been training under him. They were few in number, but loyal. The beginning of his shadow force.

There was Eltharion, a sharp-eyed youth with unmatched vision.

Maeriel, a bowmaiden who could fire two arrows at once.

And three others, each eager for a chance to prove themselves.

"You will come with me," Valdyn said. "The path is dangerous. But this will be the first step toward our people's rebirth."

Their eyes lit up. Nervous, but resolute. None stepped back.

Before departing, Valdyn returned to Sylwen and the children. He bent low, kissing Kaelen and Lyraine's foreheads.

Sylwen gripped his hand tightly. "Don't you dare die out there."

Valdyn gave a faint smile. "I don't have the luxury of dying. The world is still waiting for me to rebuild it."

As he turned to leave, his voice rang firm.

"Kaelen. Lyraine. Wait for me. When I return, you will have a world safer to grow in.

By dusk, Valdyn's small party left the village. The forest seemed darker than usual, the wind carrying a strange scent.

In the distance, shadows flitted between the trees.

Eltharion tensed, raising his bow. "My lord… we're being watched."

Valdyn lifted his head, his emerald eyes narrowing.

Dark Elves… they already know I'm coming.

Valdyn had made his vow, and now he took his first steps to fulfill it.

His children were his future, but uniting the elven clans was the only path forward.

In the shadowed forest, unseen eyes were already waiting.
