Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Uncertain Deception

A moment of silence and peace went by through my mind as he lay down in the forest, recollecting what he had just been through. He was unconscious for a moment there.

"Hello, sorry for the disturbance but I casted nightmare spell on you as I was afraid that you were going to steal my hunt and harm me. It is quite difficult for a blind man to hunt on his own you know."

Festor Linen immediately heard these words as his eyes opened to see a blind man, the same one whom he had seen in the nightmare.

"It is no harm, I just had a bad time there." Festor Linen said with a stuttering voice.

"You have a great sword, I checked on all your belongings after putting you in the nightmare, I don't think you would harm me." His words, calm and peaceful as he brought out the sword holding it in both of his hands.

Surprised by the spell, Festor Linen asked him

"So how does this nightmare spell work?"

"It is no big deal, the simple reasoning behind it is that it brings out elements from your memories, related or unrelated and creates scenarios of what you fear the most. Do not try to find any meaning in it, its all an illusion."

Festor Linen was still not convinced by his answer, curiously he asked a question again.

"I saw you, my friends and two people whose faces were not visible, all trying to mess with my memories. It seemed too real to be unrelated. What could it be?"

"The more you try to find meaning in it, the more insanity will fall upon you. It was nothing but a meaningless projection of unrelated memories. It also shuts down the consciousness for a while." The man, with a calm voice, once again spoke some reassuring words.

The consciousness of Festor Linen truly did escape into the astral realm of memories, but he wondered, if all of it was an illusion, then whose memories did his consciousness escape into?

He was not able to remember a single thing from the memories of the supposed true Festor Linen. It was a confusion beyond his ability to reason out of.

"Take the head of the blue scale wolf as my apology for disturbing your time. I should hurry my journey to the market." As he disappeared swiftly into the woods.

Festor Linen, still shook by what happened, picked up the shining head of the blue scale wolf, which was very valuable due to presence of crystalline teeth and pearl like hunter eyes accompanied by a hard scale on its forehead.

Festor Linen appeared disappointed in his ability. His cheerful, joyous and optimistic character was looking very sullen.

"If only I knew more about this world from the start..."

Words uttered from Festor Linen's mouth as he tensed the muscles of his eyes, preventing his tears from appearing on his face. He returned to his home continuously thinking about the memories he couldn't remember from the true Festor Linen.

The moon was shining bright, yet it was inferior to the dimly lit lamp which illuminated Festor Linen's room. The moon could make the whole country shine yet the room would stay dark. Festor Linen thought "I should just take a rest. Its been a burden on my mind, nightmares truly haunt the living soul out of a person."
