**The System of Desires
Chapter 12 — Rival Roads and Rising Flames**
The morning after Princess Meilin's arrival, the Shen compound was buzzing. For most clan members, having royal blood within their gates was unheard of. For Kai, it was a headache waiting to happen.
Training Grounds
Kai stood in the Shen training yard, sweat dripping down his brow as he spun his spear in a fluid arc. His Qi pulsed in rhythm, glowing faintly along the weapon's length.
"You're still slow," Yue said from the sidelines, leaning casually against a pillar.
Kai stopped and glared at her. "I broke through to Core Formation last night. Give me a little credit."
"You broke through because of Lian," Yue said bluntly, then smirked when Kai froze.
Lian, standing nearby, flushed bright red. "Yue!"
"What?" Yue said, unbothered. "If you two are going to glow like freshly forged spirit metal every time you're in the same room, you might as well admit it."
Kai rubbed his temples. "Can we not do this now?"
Princess Meilin chose that moment to appear, her robes fluttering slightly as she entered the courtyard.
"Am I interrupting something?" she asked, smiling faintly.
"Yes," Lian muttered under her breath.
Kai coughed. "No. We were just… training."
"Good," Meilin said. "Because you'll need it. The Heavenly Tournament isn't for the faint of heart."
Sparring Session
Yue tossed Kai a practice spear. "Come on, golden boy. Show me how much stronger you've really gotten."
Kai smirked and took a stance.
Their spar was fast and brutal. Yue was relentless, her chain weapon snapping and spinning, forcing Kai to block, dodge, and counter.
"You're better," Yue admitted after several exchanges, grinning as she blocked his thrust with the chain. "Still not good enough to beat me, though."
Kai narrowed his eyes, focusing his Qi into a Spirit-Bonded Strike. The spear flared, and Yue barely managed to deflect it.
She blinked, then laughed. "Okay… maybe you are getting dangerous."

Lian watched from the sidelines, jaw tight, until Meilin stepped closer to her.
"He fights well," Meilin said casually.
Lian shot her a look. "He's worked hard for it."
Meilin's smile was faint but knowing. "And he has you to thank, doesn't he?"
Lian's face heated again. "That's… none of your business."
Meilin just chuckled softly.
Departure
By mid-day, their group set out for the Azure Sky Sect, where the tournament would take place.
The road wound through mountains, forests, and rivers, giving them long hours of quiet travel — and plenty of opportunities for tension.
Yue took the lead, walking ahead, occasionally glancing back with a smirk whenever Kai and Lian drifted too close together.
Meilin rode a spirit horse, keeping pace with Kai and asking him endless questions about his training, the Shen clan, and his recent battles.
"You've done a lot in a short time," she said, sounding impressed. "Most cultivators spend years just reaching Core Formation."
Kai shrugged. "I had help."
Her gaze softened. "Then I hope I can help too."

Lian's grip on her sword hilt tightened slightly.
First Rival Encounter
As they neared a narrow pass, a group of riders blocked the road. Their leader, a tall young man with sharp features, dismounted and sneered.
"So, this is the 'Shen hero' I've been hearing about," he said. "You don't look like much."
Kai's hand tightened on his spear. "And you are?"
"Jiang Rui of the Iron Blood Sect," the man said. "Remember the name — you'll be kneeling before me in the tournament."
Yue stepped forward, chain weapon twirling lazily. "Big words for someone blocking the road like a bandit."
Rui's eyes narrowed. "Careful, rogue. The only reason I'm not crushing you right now is because killing is forbidden outside the arena."
Kai smirked. "Then I'll just have to humiliate you inside the arena."
The riders growled, but Rui waved them off and turned his horse.
"Enjoy your last few days of pride, Shen," he said coldly. "Soon, everyone will see who really deserves to stand at the top."
As they rode off, Lian exhaled sharply. "I don't like him."
"You're not supposed to," Yue said, smirking. "He's our first punching bag."
Campfire Tension
That night, they made camp near a river.
Lian sat close to Kai, tending to his arm where a branch had scratched him during training earlier.
"You keep getting hurt," she said softly.
Kai smiled faintly. "You keep patching me up."
From across the fire, Yue rolled her eyes. "If you two keep flirting, at least wait until after dinner."
Lian flushed. "We're not—"
"Sure," Yue said, clearly unconvinced.
Meilin just watched with quiet amusement, sipping tea.
"You all act like you've traveled together for years," she said softly. "It's… strange, but nice."
Kai glanced at her, noticing something wistful in her expression.
"Didn't you have companions before this?" he asked.
Meilin's smile turned faintly sad. "Not ones who stayed."
Kai felt something stir in his chest — pity, and maybe something more.

Lian caught the look and scowled slightly, turning away.
Chapter End — The Road to Azure Sky
As dawn broke, they packed up camp. The towering gates of Azure Sky Sect could be seen in the distance, shining in the morning sun.
Kai adjusted his spear and took a deep breath.
"This is it," he said.
Yue grinned. "Let's go make some enemies."
Lian nodded, her determination returning.
Meilin's smile turned playful. "And maybe a few allies."

Kai exhaled.
