Chapter 5 - Did it work?

The soldiers all held their breath as the trumpets blared, they all looked up as they saw the archers scrambling on top of the walls. The archers and cannoneers shouting as they issued commands and getting into firing positions. The archers drawing their bows as far as they could, as well as the cannoneers finished loading up the cannons. A more scarred older man seemly a sergeant raised his arm up into the air. At that moment, the UI window screen hovered in front of Malbins face

**Survive the siege mission**

**Enemy units remaining: 24000**

**1000 enemy troops has been deployed. 3000 enemy troops will appear in 30 minutes.**

The UI window screen then disappeared as the sergeant begin to shout in a loud authorative voice "ON MY MARK.." The sergeant shouted, the archers held the arrow tightly not letting it loose just yet. "READY...!" Silence was felt in the air but was cut off with far distance shouting of hordes of ogres, the shouting got louder and louder that it even reached into the soldiers down below the walls. "FIRE!!!" The sergeant moved his arm downwards, upon these words the archers and cannoneers corresponded with their attacks.

The archers shot hundreds of arrows in the air as the arrows then fell upon the enemy killing a few unarmoured ogres while injuring a few. The archers did not let up the assault and continued the barrage of arrows, then- BOOM a few ogres flew into the air and dying upon impact with the ground then another boom then another. The cannons shot precisely without fail upon the large bunch up ogres as they grouped up together, some ogres fell into the traps made by the soldiers as they were impaled by the wooden stakes. As the dust settled, all the ogres that charged on the first wave had died.

The archers and cannoneers cheered as they saw the wipe out of the ogres but the sergeant swiftly barked an order. "ITS NOT OVER, THAT WAS THE FIRST TASTE OF OUR VICTORY. HERE COMES MORE OF EM! GET INTO POSITON AND KEEP FIRING AT THOSE ORGES!" The archers and cannoneers quickly complied and got ready into firing positions. The UI window screen appeared infront of Malbin once again.

**Survive the siege mission**

**Enemy units remaining: 23000**

**3000 enemy troops has been deployed. 4250 enemy troops will appear in 25 minutes**

Then the UI screen disappeared as shortly afterwards, the appearance of ogres and shouting from them appeared once more. They seem to not care on their fallen comrades, they even trampled on their own as they charged through the onslaught.

Malbin stared blankly as the screen disappeared infront of him. 'It decrease by.. 5 minutes? The hell!??! Does this damn system brought me here to suffer more?! So basically when we are fighting we will get another round of fighting?! That isn't enough time to even get recovery and rest for the troops, plus in the future things may go south.. fuck.' Malbin thought as he looked back up facing the still closed gate. 'Its still holding up and the sergeant seems fine ordering around the archers and cannoneers, but the soldiers are are nervous and anxious.. morale really is needed in order for units to not get a negative debuff on their physical stats.' Malbin put his hand on his chin trying to figure out how to approach this issue- an idea..

He turned his head to the left looking at Alessia 'Since she's the commander, I should probably leave the morale boosting to her. After all, they are more closer to her in comrades in arms.' As he contemplate the right choice, he nudged Alessia and gave a hush tone. "Ease the troops will you, Alessia? I'm not really good at speeches, its not really my thing."

Alessia grinned as she wrapped her arm around Malbins head in a playful manner "Shy ugly? Come on and your suppose to be the governor of this city. Ah whatever, I'll do you a favour." then she lets go off Malbins head afterwards, boomed in a authorative voice. "LISTEN UP, MEN AND WOMEN. WE ARE THE SOLDIERS OF URVILABS! WE ARE THE SOLDIERS OF THE FEALLEN EMPIRE! IF WE HAVE TO DIE THEN LET US DIE IN A GLORIOUS DEATH. SO THAT OUR DEATH WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR OUR COURAGEOUSNESS INSTEAD OF COWARDICE."

Alessia lifted her sword into the air while the soldiers cheer with new found determination. The soldiers comforted each other asking for drinks after the battle and talks of reuniting with family again. They steadied themselves once more facing towards the gate.

"And that's how you do a speech, make a note of that alright? We don't want a representative of our fine city stuttering in important talks. " Alessia spoke in a playful tone in Malbins ear as she pat him on the shoulder and turned to face the gate.

Malbin gave a understanding nod of what she meant even if she came off a little rude. "Alright alright.. just keep your focus when the gate opens." he shortly replied.

The onslaught continued as barrage of arrows and cannons start to fire upon the ogres. As a result, the second wave ogres fell to the same fate as the first wave ogres. However, their progression near the walls were alarming to the sergeant overseeing the battlefield.

The sergeant called out for Malbin "Master Malbin! I need your assistance, its very urgent!"

Malbin turned his head left and right towards Alessia and Edwin who gave firm approval nods, he nodded back also then bolting up the stairs and finally reached the top of the wall standing in front of the sergeant who gave a salute to Malbin and dropped it.

"Master Malbin, its quite an issue on how the orges are now slowly reaching the main gate. Aswell as our supplies.. we are half way to depletion. I don't think they are going to stop soon and run tails." The sergeant spoke in a calm but a hint of worriedness lingered in his voice as his expression flickered a sense of nervousness.

Malbin pondered in his mind 'Great... usually each wave has 40 units meaning.. we killed 4000 ogres in the two waves since it started.' Malbin quickly checked the time on the UI window screen seeing only 15 seconds remained. 'Shit.. I have to think faster to conserve supplies.. since its going to be another wave with less time. Best course of action is-' His mind was cut off with a sudden notification of the UI window screen.

**Survive the siege mission**

**Enemy units remaining: 15750**

**4250 enemy units has been deployed. 5750 enemy troops will appear in 20 minutes.**

A another notification pops up on the UI window screen.

**New enemy unit type unlocked! Click to view!**

Malbin stared at the new notification his mind started to race. 'Fuck.. new enemy unit type? Its not the siege tower ones, so what could it be?' Then Malbin without thought clicked on the tab.

**Belly Boom! Description: The enemy unit is an artillery type unit. Which consist of catapults as their weapon. **

'Belly bloom!?!?! Already this early?!?!' Malbin starting to reflect at the possible outcomes 'Then, I must tell the sergeant to redirect the cannon fire or else the walls and cannons will be hit-my money!!' Malbin almost dreaded at the thought of the repair cost but there was no time to think of that now. Malbin faced the sergeant infront of him then declared his urgency in a concerned urgent voice "Sergeant, stop firing the cannons towards the enemy and aim at-"

THUD, Malbin was thrown back and landed on his back. Dust filled the air as Malbin waved his hand and cough- but then.. he felt blood on his cheek, slowly touching it. His eyes widen as he looked up then saw the sergeants lower half on the floor the top half nowhere to be seen. THUD THUD THUD. Archers and cannoneers scatter in panic as a castle wall tower fell as more and more rocks were thrown.

Malbin got up as soon as he recovered. He held his hand on his stomach as well as checking for any injuries, thankfully none. He sighed a sense of relief afterwards, he looked up as he saw a boulder coming right at him. The only words that formed into his mind at this moment was.. 'Shit.' he closed his eyes awaiting for the impact then-CRUMBLE.. He heard rocks falling down near him, he slowly opened seeing if he died or not.. and saw Alessia with her greatsword out as she continued to slice the other rocks that were thrown.

"HURRY UP UGLY! DO YOU THINK I CAN COVER ALL THE SIDES!?!?" Alessia yelled at Malbin as she continued to slice down the boulders with precision. "GIVE THE ORDERS WHILE I TRY TO REDUCE THE DAMAGES ON THE WALLS!"

Malbin looked at Alessia for a moment then grinned back as he gave a thumbs up "Thanks for the cover, Alessia." He responded back to her and quickly rush to oversee where the enemy artillery was. 'Not there.. not there.. ' His eyes scanned the area and spotted a boulder flying missing by couple of metres and hitting the ogres instead, he paused and waited for another one to fly. 'Come on you fat ogres.. show your position so I can rain down metal onto you.' He brooded, then another one flew but this time landing onto the wall. However, the artillery position revealed its location. 'IN THE FOREST!' his thoughts showered, his mouth instinctively open then spoke in a hurried tone.

"CANNONEERS! GET YOUR ASS ONTO THE CANNONS AND REDIRECT FIRE AT THE FOREST! I WANT IT DEFORESTED BY THE TIME I LOOK BACK AT IT, AND ARCHERS STAND YOUR GROUND! KEEP FIRING AT THE ORGES WHILE YOUR COMMANDER IS DESTROYING THE BOULDERS!"

The archers and cannoneers gave a sense of doubt but nodded then responded with a huge shout "YES, MY LORD!" They all scurried to their positions as some archers brought the wounded down from the walls.

The cannoneers took hold of the working cannons and started to reload then ignited the fuse. A moment of silence then.. BANG! Another bang rang out then another, a barrage of cannon attacks zoomed towards the forest. Furthermore as each boom landed, a wail of ogres cried out as shards of wood flew into the air.

"HIT!" A cannoneer cried out waving both his arms to Malbin signalling a direct fire.

Malbin gave a creepy smile with a thumbs up, which startled the cannoneer as he begin to quickly turn away to resume his duties.

"Huh..? I just gave them a thumbs up and smile.. why are they scared?!!?" Malbin still having a sinister smile as he turned to Alessia who finished cutting up the last boulder flying.

Alessia stared blankly at Malbins face, afterwards gave a short simple response with a raised eyebrow. "I think he's just returning to fire the cannons." she said bluntly.

Malbin looked back at the cannoneer and gave a firm nod, agreeing with her reply "I see.. anyways.." Malbin looked at the archers who were constantly sending a hail of arrows towards the ogres, he took steps forward and leaned to get a better view. In his mind as he watched the ogres relentless charge under heavy fire. 'Ogres are getting closer now.. probably going to surround us then starve us or just try to force their way in. However..' Malbin mouth started to stretch wider and wider 'I just love exploiting the game mechanics.. don't I?' He called out to the soldiers that were holding the gate.

"OPEN IT LIKE WE PLANNED!" Malbin ordered, as the soldiers quickly open the gates slightly. Just enough for a single ogre to pass through with ease, the soldiers secured the gate with ropes and barricades to help it stay in place as a measure of precaution.

Malbin smirked as he saw the gates opened just perfectly as planned. 'Phase 2..' he thought then ordered as the top of his lungs "ARCHERS, FOCUS FIRE NEAR THE GATE ENTRANCE!"

The archers complied as they all turned their bows towards the entrance of the gate, as they begun to wait for the ogre advancement.

The ogres begin to charge towards the gate but some of them questioned the soldiers actions as they continued to charge. "Are these hoomies dumb?" "Probably AHAH! I can't ait to have my fill!" "Is this a trap made by em lot?!" "Naaa! Hoomies are stoopid..!"

Malbin watched with a menacing smile as the ogres were getting shot upon by the archers as they neared the gate, as the lucky ones managed to slip through and enter through the gate. The first ogre that walked through bled out and collapse to the ground, but the second came through the gate then saw the packed formation. The ogre let out a fierce roar as it swung its club around like a madman, the spearman's immediately started to jab their spears precisely into the ogres body halting its attack. A wail cried out then silence as it collapse dead, some ogres tried to run from the side but were stopped and sliced by the footmen guarding the sides.

The soldiers continued their packed formation, not letting the ogres break through the lines. Each ogre death boosted their morale to keep on fighting, they begun to shout out patriotic words and commands as well.

The ogres confused and infuriated tried to strike but all met the same fate. "WAHH! TH-THESE HOOMIES W-HA AGH-" "CHARGE ME NO AFRAID-AGH!"

After a devastating few minutes, the final ogre collapse to the ground. Malbin looked as he saw no causalities down below. 'Just minor injuries..' he thought and nodded approvingly. Suddenly, a ding was heard.

**Survive the siege mission**

**Enemy units remaining: 15750**

**5750 enemy units deploying. 10000 enemy units will spawn in 15 minutes**

**WARNING! Enemy units are now more armoured.**

**New enemy unit type**

**Chargers! Description: These ogres tamed these beast called tolsty! They are fast four legged creatures and well build on fat and muscles.**

Malbin looked at the screen for a bit then a vein popped as he raised his fist into the air, while he bit his bottom lip.

**Erm.. [Sweating]**

The screen disappeared as Malbin was about to lash out before being interrupted by the sounds of war cries in the far distance. Malbin turned to the nearest archer "How many arrows you guys have?"

The archer gave a salute before replying "Well.. not alot, my lord. We are trying to reduce the amount of shots but we are soon going to run out."

"Tsk.." Malbin let out as he waved the archer back to his position. "Since, we are almost out..is it better to let it all out..? No, that's stupid. I need to conserve it for the final wave.. but risk letting them break the lines..?' Malbins mind race jumping to conclusions, his hand gripped the edge as he kept hearing the roars getting louder and louder- then.. a yell came out "ARCHERS..! DO NOT FIRE AT THIS BUNCH EVEN IF THEY GET CLOSE, CANONEERS FIRE AT THE ENEMY ARTILLERY WHEN ITS FULLY GONE, STOP FIRING UNTIL THEN!"

The archers and cannoneers were shocked as they looked at each other in confusion but complied with uncertainty.

**MORALE DOWN. -20% ON ARCHERS AND CANNONEERS ACCURACY**

The UI window screen appeared on the side of Malbins face, he gritted his teeth as Alessia started to walk up to him and gave a firm smack on his cheek and lifted him up

"MALBIN... WHAT ARE YOU DOING..? YOU ARE LETTING THE SOLDIERS DOWN THERE FIGHT WITHOUT SUPPORT? ARE YOU CRAZY?" Alessia screamed onto Malbins face "THEY HAVE FAMILIES.. BROTHERS, SISTERS, FATHERS, MOTHERS, DAUGHTERS, SONS..?! AND YOU ARE LETTING THEM FIGHT WITHOUT SUPPORT A LARGE WAVE OF OGRES? ANSWER ME!"

Malbin looked at Alessias eyes briefly, he then looked down cutting the eye contact and spoke in a calm disconnected voice "Haven't you notice? Look over there." Malbin pointed as Alessias eyes followed. "Have you seen the chieftain? You haven't, haven't you? So that's why I'm saving up, its better to save the majority and risk the lives of the minority.."

Alessia looked back at Malbin, then back to the ogres charging towards the city, then back to Malbin. She puckered her lips tightly, her brows furrowed then let a loud tch noise. She let go of Malbin and walked down the stairs without uttering a word.

Malbin brushed himself off as he looked with distain at himself in his mind. 'But sacrifices.. have to be made..' he thought to himself 'Just like the game.' He spotted the ogres charging as then later spotted the enemy artillery in range "CANNONEERS! FIRE AT 3 O CLOCK" as he moved his arm down. Large booms followed aiming precisely at the target, a moment of silence until Malbin then issued another command. "ARCHERS AND CANNONEERS! IF YOU SEE ANOTHER FORCE COMING, FOCUS ALL FIRE POWER TOWARDS THEM!"

Malbin then scurried down the walls, as he stood back into the lines next to Alessia who was still silent and contemplating with furrowed brows while Edwin gave a reassuring smile to Malbin while he whispered quietly "Don't worry.. Its a smart tactic after some thought. She will come around soon, she started to realise it might be the best even though it is a brutal method.."

"Lets just get this over with.." Malbin took a sword and shield from a nearby table, and got into a stance. Alessia raised her great sword with ease as she also gets into a stance. Edwin ripped off his sleeves as he wrapped it around his knuckles, securing it tightly before getting into a fighting stance.

As the roars continued.. BANG.. a tolsy sudden appeared as it tried to breach through the gate, its mouth opening and closing in a frenzy state..

"PREPARE FOR YOUR LIVES MEN!" Malbin yelled out to every soldier at this very moment.
