Chapter 2 - Tears In Sparks

Her words lingered in my head. I pushed her a little, "What did you say?" I asked her. Her look was normal, calm, and serious.

"I know a way to make you like me, a Cherub," she said, looking at me, her lips curved, eyes softened. I got angry; I should be happy, but I am not. I got angrier. If she told me this before, maybe my mother would be alive now, I thought. I clutched my hands again, and more drops of blood started to drip from my hand. "Darling," she said, concerne in her voice as she walked to me.

"Why are you telling me this just now?" I said, taking a step back. I couldn't even look at her eyes without getting angrier. She is my fiancé, my love, the woman I adore, and I can't look at her eyes now; I am ashamed. She stopped.

"It comes with a risk," she said, her voice was almost silent like she was embarrassed. "Please look at me," she asked me. I did; the look on her face, it was the first time she looked at me like that, she was worried, really worried.

"But why now?" I raised my voice. "If you told me this before, she would still be alive," I said. Her look changed again; now she was sad.

"I could lose you," she said, her voice shaking. "I did not want to lose you, I still don't want to, but I know you won't stop, so at least I know I helped you as much as I can, so please don't yell," she continued, her eyes watering.

"Really, you want to help me? If you wanted to help me, you should have months ago, not now. Tell me, do you even love me?" I yelled at her as I turned around; I couldn't look at her anymore.

There was a silence for a moment before she said, "Your spark is bigger than ever." The words struck me.

"What?" I asked, confused.

"Remember what I told you the first time we met?" she asked, her voice still shaking.

"Yes, it was about six years ago. We were ten," I said as my lips curved a little. "I played alone at the park, as I always did, and you came up to me and told me, 'Your spark is low. Are you okay?'" I continued.

"And you looked at me and said, 'You look hungry, want half?' and you gave me half your sandwich," she said with her shaky voice; I could hear that she was crying.

"Then my mother came, apologized, and took me," I said, turning back; I could see the tears dropping from her eyes.

"You were the only one that looked at me, and you didn't care about my beauty or that we are different; that moment, I fell in love with you," she said; more tears came out. I felt bad; I made her cry. My love is crying because of me. "So please stop yelling, don't say mean things to me." She continued as she burst into tears. I rushed to her and hugged her tight, her face on my chest. We argued for the first time, and I made her cry; what a fool I am to think such a thing. I thought, holding her tightly.

"I'm sorry, my love. I am a fool and cruel to say such things to you," I said, brushing her beautiful white hair. "That day was the first time someone worried about me, you know? I fell in love with you the same day. Then I saw your beauty; even now, you are the prettiest woman I know. I am lucky to have you," I continued.

"What do we do now?" she asked after a long moment. I still felt bad for yelling, for not believing her; in the end, I betrayed her.

I realized her and walked towards my mother's body. "First, I need you to take her to the morgue," I said as I cleaned her body. "The one who did it was a high rank and from a rival family."

"How do you know?" Ava asked, wiping her tears.

"It is personal; that means someone is mad that we're getting married. The thing is, he would have killed me. It would give him the same effect. The difference is, if they kill me, they're giving my sisters a way to claim the ranks and challenge the rival families," I explained, lifting my mother's body.

"So it is someone that wants me, so everyone and a rival family against everyone?" she asked, tilting her head.

"Yes, but there is a way, my love," I said, giving her the body. "If you can make me a Cherub, I can claim the rank and be the family lead from there. It's just a game of wits to see who did it."

"You say it like it is easy," Ava said to me as she got to the door out. "Claiming the rank in your family won't be easy, especially that they know what you are."

"I know, but that's the only plan we have," I said to her. "Besides, I am already part of the family," I said, then opened the door for her, and we started to walk to the morgue.

On the way there, people looked at us. I could see on their faces they thought it was me. "I can't believe someone would do such a thing. If only we got there on time, darling," Ava suddenly said, then winked at me. After she said that, everyone's faces changed. She had her way to charm and convince everyone, even me.

After a few minuts in silense betwean us she asked "what do we do after the morge" her worried face looked at.

"We get married, of course," I said, a huge curve forming on my lips. "That man doesn't want us to marry, so we have to now," I said as I shifted my look to her, and her beautiful smile appeared on her face again.

We got to the morgue. Inside, there were layers of closets containing bodies of cherubs and humans. "So, do you want to tell me what happened?" the morgue keeper asked.

"Honestly, we don't know," I said, trying to see marks on her body. There were none.

From the look on his face, he didn't find any.

"She was killed by a professional, that is for sure, and with a holy or demonic weapon," the morgue keeper said. "Nasty way to kill someone," he said, shaking his head.

I got angry again, cutting her spark. This confirmed my theory, I thought. Ava grabbed my hand; she was angry as well.

"Kid, I know you are an adult now, but be careful. You're still human to me. We're all the same in the end. No one can tell the difference between a cherub's skull and a human's skull, but for others, it's different," the morgue keeper said, taking her body.

"Thank you," Ava said to the morgue keeper as we walked out of the morgue to the church of the Everliving God.
