Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Into the Depths

Let's drop into the action. Time for the first real dungeon crawl.

The air bleeding from the tunnel was cold, smelling of wet rock and something ancient. It was a stark contrast to the quiet warmth of the morning, to the feeling of Kara's steady breathing beside him as he'd woken. Draven stood at the edge of the dark, Grayfang a silent, armored shadow at his side. The dire wolf's new silver eyes seemed to cut through the gloom, hungry for whatever lay ahead. Stagnation was a death sentence in the Infinite Realms. It was time to roll the dice.

He did a quick mental check, the System's UI flickering over his vision.

[Summon: Grayfang – Tier 4 Ancestral Guardian]

[New Ability: Spectral Charge]

That last one had potential. A ghost-form rush. Perfect for an ambush.

Kara appeared at his shoulder, bow ready, her hair pulled back in a no-nonsense knot. Jaxon was right behind, a heavy torch in one hand and a salvaged sword that looked like a toy in his massive grip. No grand speeches were needed. They'd been through too much for that.

"Lights out, then," Draven said, his voice low. "Standard formation. Grayfang's on point. Call out anything that looks even slightly suspicious."

He led the way in, the darkness swallowing them whole. The tunnel was a tight, slick-walled passage carved with the same runes as the forge. Grayfang's nose was working overtime, the Scent of the Ancients ability painting faint impressions in Draven mind: old metal, dormant magic, and something else… something that felt like a long-dead heartbeat. A faint glow pulsed from the depths ahead.

"This feels way too much like a trap," Kara murmured, her voice a ghost in the tight space.

"Every dungeon is a trap," Draven shot back, his eyes scanning every crack in the stone. "The trick is making sure it springs on the other guy."

"Just point me at what needs hitting," Jaxon grunted, the torchlight making his shadow a giant.

The tunnel opened into a cavern. In the center, a crystalline orb sat on a stone pedestal, pulsing with a soft, internal light. The source of the glow. Scattered around it were priceless crafting materials—gleaming ingots and strange, crystallized reagents. The jackpot.

Too easy.

"Jaxon, hold the entrance. Kara, cover me," Draven ordered. He and Grayfang moved in, flanking the pedestal. As his fingers brushed the orb's cool surface, the System screamed a notification.

Knowledge flooded his mind—recipes, schematics, power on a platter. And then the trap sprang.

Shadows bled from the walls, coalescing into spectral guardians with shimmering blades and hollow eyes. "Contact!" Draven yelled. "They're tied to the orb! Defend this spot!"

The cavern exploded into motion. Kara's arrows became streaks of light, pinning one guardian against the far wall. Jaxon was a roaring bulwark of muscle and steel, his sword clashing against ethereal blades. "Grayfang, charge!" Draven commanded. The dire wolf's form went translucent as it blasted through a guardian, leaving a vortex of spectral energy in its wake. Draven was a blur of calculated motion, his rune-dagger finding the cracks in their defenses, a scalpel in a bar fight.

It was over in seconds. The last guardian dissolved into mist, and the cavern fell silent, the only sound their own ragged breathing.

[Reward: Essence Orb Integration]

Leaning against the pedestal, Draven scooped up the orb. It felt warm now, humming in sync with his own pulse.

Kara sagged against a wall, a tired, brilliant grin on her face. "Okay, you're officially a madman."

"But a successful one," Jaxon laughed, wiping spectral dust from his brow.

"Loot up," Draven ordered, a grin of his own threatening to break through. "We're not leaving this stuff behind."

They retreated with their spoils, and the tunnel rumbled behind them, a final groan before collapsing, sealing itself off for good. Back in the familiar sanity of their courtyard, Draven slotted the orb into a recess on the forge. It clicked into place, and the entire anvil lit up, the runes now glowing with a brilliant, white light.

As evening fell, they sat around the fire, the watchtower a proud silhouette against the stars. Kara sat shoulder to shoulder with him, a comfortable, solid presence. The orb would let them build stronger armor, sharper weapons. It would make them a bigger target. The cycle continued.

Her hand found his in the flickering firelight, a simple, grounding gesture. He didn't pull away. It was just another variable, he told himself. A welcome one.
