Chapter 3 - The Hidden Heir

Ling Tian was shocked by Lu Jian's words, but he quickly regained his composure and stared deeply at the group standing behind Lu Jian, then calmly returned to his place without uttering a word.

Naturally, Hong Yu and Fang Lin didn't miss the opportunity to mock Ling Hao's son.

Hong Yu laughed and said, "Fortunately, I don't have a foolish child like yours, Ling Hao."

Fang Lin chuckled beside him and added, "Indeed, you're right, Brother Hong. What's the use of having spiritual roots if he can't even reach the intermediate stage of Qi Condensation?"

Ling Hao didn't respond, or perhaps he had nothing to say, as their words were accurate.

As for Ling Tian, he glared at them angrily, but soon calmed himself and thought, "Damn you both, old men… just wait. I will reach the intermediate stage of Qi Condensation, no matter the cost." He kept these words to himself, so as not to make people think him even crazier than they already did. Nevertheless, he resolved to make it his immediate goal.

After Lu Jian finished the test, he refused to accept payment due to the sheer number of talented individuals joining his sect. He then guided the selected group and was about to depart. But before leaving, he cast a spell toward Ling Tian and said, "Although I cannot take you with me, you are the first I've seen with Absolute Compatibility. This spell carries the full might of a Foundation-Building Cultivator. Consider it a gift, and an apology for not taking you along."

Ling Tian bowed slightly and said respectfully, "I appreciate your kindness, sir. I will make sure to use it wisely."

Lu Jian replied, "Very well, I've said all I needed. Now, I must leave." He waved his hand, and a giant divine bird appeared, large enough to carry everyone, soaring away with them.

Ling Tian stared at the divine bird as it departed, his eyes filled with astonishment and contemplation. He then looked at the spell he had received and smiled, thinking to himself, "It seems I misjudged him… he's a surprisingly decent rogue."

Of course, no one heard him, or he would have faced a severe beating.

Afterward, Ling Tian followed his father back to the clan headquarters.

On the way, his mother spoke with concern, "Don't worry, my son. Although you don't possess great roots, I will ensure you get the best resources."

Ling Tian smiled and thanked her, saying, "Thank you, Mother. I am truly grateful." Though he said it, deep down he knew that what his mother promised was nearly impossible.

Even as the clan leader's son, lacking talent made him little different from any other member of the clan.

After some time, they arrived at the clan headquarters, and Ling Hao ordered everyone to disperse, except for Ling Tian.

Ling Tian looked at the departing faces. Most were sorrowful, while the few who were happy were those whose children or relatives possessed spiritual roots.

"Do you have anything to say to me, Father?" Ling Tian asked, looking at the imposing figure seated in the clan leader's chair.

His father stared at him for a moment, then handed him a book and said, "Although you are not among the top talents, you are still my son. Take this—it's the clan's secret cultivation technique. Study it and return it to me within a week. Do not tell anyone that I gave it to you. I shouldn't have to remind you of the punishment for leaking this technique, even to the clan elders."

After saying this, Ling Hao's eyes revealed a murderous intent, making Ling Tian shiver in fear and say, "Don't worry, Father. I will definitely not reveal it to anyone."

"Very well, you may leave now," Ling Hao said, waving his hand slowly.

After Ling Tian left, a shadow appeared behind Ling Hao and spoke quietly, "Forgive my intrusion, Sir, but… why give the technique to the seventh Young Master? Although he has become more rational recently compared to his previous foolish behavior, I don't think that's enough to grant him the technique."

Ling Hao didn't look at the shadow, continuing to stare at the hall door, and said, "Exactly. I gave the technique to Chen Er, my most talented son… and I gave it to Ling Er, the least talented. Why do you think that is?"

The shadow hesitated for a moment, then replied after a pause, "I suppose it's a contingency plan… in case we are discovered and the first Young Master fails to escape."

Ling Hao said firmly, full of determination, "Exactly. No one would expect the secret cultivation technique to be in the hands of the least competent clan member." He paused for a moment, then added in a calm voice, "It is impossible for me to allow the clan to fall during my tenure as its leader."
