Chapter 14 - Chapter 14

The next day dawned with a mix of apprehension and determination for Anika. The support from her family and friends had fortified her, but the memory of Clara's accusations still stung. Today was the day she would request a re-test, a chance to clear her name and silence the whispers that followed her.

As she walked into school, she noticed the usual glances, but there was a subtle shift. Some students offered nods of encouragement, while others simply looked away, avoiding eye contact. Anika focused on her goal, heading straight to the principal's office.

Ms. Reyes greeted her with a warm smile. "Anika, how are you feeling today?"

"Better, Ms. Reyes," Anika replied, "I'm here to ask for a re-test. I want to prove that I didn't cheat."

Ms. Reyes nodded. "I understand, Anika. I've already spoken with your teachers, and they are willing to accommodate your request. However, they want to ensure the test is fair and unbiased. They've decided to create a new set of questions on the spot."

Anika took a deep breath. "That's fine, Ms. Reyes. I'm ready for anything."

Ms. Reyes led Anika to an empty classroom where her Math and Science teachers, Mr. Santos and Ms. Dela Cruz, were waiting. Both teachers looked at Anika with a mix of sympathy and respect.

"Anika," Mr. Santos began, "we admire your courage in requesting this re-test. To ensure fairness, we've decided to create the questions right here, right now. Are you comfortable with that?"

"Yes, sir," Anika said confidently.

Ms. Dela Cruz added, "The questions will be based on the Grade 5 curriculum, so nothing you haven't already learned. We'll focus on the topics covered in the last few weeks."

Mr. Santos picked up a marker and turned to the whiteboard. "Alright, let's start with Math. Anika, can you solve this: If a train travels 120 kilometers in 2 hours, what is its average speed?"

Anika quickly calculated the answer in her head. "60 kilometers per hour, sir."

"Correct," Mr. Santos said, nodding approvingly. He wrote down another question: "What is the area of a rectangle with a length of 8 centimeters and a width of 5 centimeters?"

"40 square centimeters," Anika answered without hesitation.

Ms. Dela Cruz then stepped forward. "Okay, Anika, let's move on to Science. Can you name the three states of matter?"

"Solid, liquid, and gas," Anika replied.

"Good. Now, can you explain the process of photosynthesis?" Ms. Dela Cruz asked.

Anika explained the process clearly and concisely, describing how plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and energy.

The teachers exchanged impressed glances. "Very well, Anika," Mr. Santos said. "We have one more request. To ensure complete transparency, we would like you to take the test in the school's open courtyard, where everyone can see that there is no possibility of cheating."

Anika hesitated for a moment, her mind racing. Taking the test in front of the entire school would be incredibly nerve-wracking, but it would also send a clear message that she had nothing to hide.

"I agree," she said. "I want everyone to see that I'm doing this fairly."

The news spread like wildfire. Soon, a crowd of students gathered around the courtyard, curious to see Anika take her re-test. Clara and her friends were among them, their expressions a mix of disbelief and annoyance.

A table and chair were set up in the center of the courtyard. Mr. Santos handed Anika the test paper, which contained a mix of math problems and science questions. Anika took a deep breath and began to work, ignoring the stares and whispers around her.

As Anika focused on the test, the students around her began to murmur.

"Do you think she can actually do it?" one student whispered.

"I don't know," another replied. "Those questions look hard."

Clara scoffed. "She's probably cheating somehow. Maybe she has the answers written on her arm."

Miguel, who was standing nearby, overheard Clara's comment. He glared at her. "Why don't you just give her a chance, Clara? She's trying to prove something."

"Yeah, Clara," Mia added. "At least she's brave enough to do this in front of everyone."

Clara rolled her eyes but remained silent.

Anika worked diligently, her brow furrowed in concentration. She solved each problem and answered each question with precision. After what seemed like an eternity, she finished the test and handed it back to Mr. Santos.

"Thank you, Anika," Mr. Santos said. "We will grade this immediately and announce the results as soon as possible."

The teachers took the test paper and disappeared inside the school building, leaving Anika alone in the courtyard with the curious crowd.

The wait was agonizing. Anika tried to remain calm, but her nerves were on edge. Finally, after what felt like hours, Ms. Reyes appeared, followed by Mr. Santos and Ms. Dela Cruz.

"Attention, everyone," Ms. Reyes announced. "We have graded Anika's re-test, and we are ready to announce the results."

The crowd fell silent.

Mr. Santos stepped forward. "Anika," he said, "you have answered all the questions correctly. You have proven beyond any doubt that you did not cheat on the original exam."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd, followed by a wave of applause and cheers. Anika's friends rushed forward to congratulate her, their faces beaming with pride. Clara and her cronies, however, looked crestfallen, their faces etched with disbelief and disappointment.

Ms. Reyes smiled. "Anika, we are very proud of you. You have shown great courage and integrity. Your original grade will be reinstated, and any accusations against you will be dropped."

Anika felt a wave of relief wash over her. She had done it. She had cleared her name and proven her innocence.

As the crowd began to disperse, Miguel approached Anika, a proud smile on his face. "I knew you could do it, Anika," he said. "You're the smartest person I know."

"Thanks, Miguel," Anika said, grinning. "I couldn't have done it without your support."

Mia joined them, hugging Anika tightly. "We're so proud of you, Anika," she said. "You showed everyone what you're made of."

Despite the overwhelming support and congratulations, Anika couldn't help but notice that some students still harbored doubts and suspicions. Whispers and rumors continued to circulate, fueled by Clara's persistent negativity and the lingering uncertainty in the minds of some.

"Maybe the teachers were just being lenient with her," one student whispered. "Maybe they made the test easier for her because they felt sorry for her."

Miguel overheard the comment and his temper flared. He turned to the group of students, his eyes blazing with anger. "Enough!" he shouted, his voice ringing out across the courtyard. "You didn't see her cheat, you didn't see the test, so stop spreading lies and rumors! Anika proved herself fair and square. Why can't you just accept the truth and move on?"

The students, taken aback by Miguel's outburst, fell silent and quickly dispersed, their faces flushed with embarrassment.
