Ava let out a deep sigh as she sat on her bed, staring blankly at the wall in front of her. She had been in her room for almost two hours now, and she was already sick of it. It had slowly become her routine over the past two weeks, wake up, stay in her room, avoid everyone, wait for the day to pass. At first, it felt safe. Now, it felt suffocating.
The air in the room felt stuffy, like it was closing in on her. She shifted on the bed, then finally stood up, running a hand through her hair as she walked toward the door. She opened it slightly, just enough to peer outside.
She popped her head through the small opening and stared into the quiet hallway. It was empty. No workers passing by. No sound of footsteps. No voices.
Thankfully.
