Chapter 2: The Living Harvest
Hope flickered in the plaza, fragile as a candle. Elias watched Larra weave through villagers, her face tight, tattered cloak brushing cracked stone. The quiet hope that had settled over the plaza was a fragile thing, easily shattered by the gnawing reality of an empty belly. Food stores dwindled, the Riverlands barren from war. The food stores were dwindling. The Riverlands were a barren wasteland, scoured clean by the passing armies of wolves and lions. A stale bread crust, gritty in his mouth, sat heavy, its tang a reminder of scarcity. Wind carried ash and salt, stinging his eyes, a hammer's clang marking noon. They'll leave without food, Elias thought, shoulders aching from pacing.
"We have two days of food left, Elias," Larra said, fists clenched. "We have two days of food left, Elias," she said, her hands clenching into fists. "After that... they'll leave. They'll scatter to the wind, looking for food. We'll lose everyone."
"Don't worry," Elias said, hiding doubt. "I have a plan. The DGS says there's fertile soil here." "Don't worry," Elias said, trying to project a confidence he didn't feel. "I have a plan. The DGS says there's fertile soil here."
Larra scoffed, brushing a glowing seed from her cloak. "Magic dirt won't fill their stomachs. We need a miracle." "Larra scoffed. 'Magic dirt won't fill their stomachs. We need a miracle.'"
"Don't mock the magic dirt," Corax cawed, perched on rubble. "It's picky, but it's got an appetite." "'Don't mock the magic dirt,' Corax said, landing on a pile of newly-formed rubble. 'It's picky, but it's got an appetite.'" A villager dropped a basket, its clatter a mini-payoff, easing tension.
Elias knelt, uncovering dark loam, unnatural for the cliff's salt. "Elias knelt, brushing aside a layer of rock and dirt. The soil beneath was a rich, dark loam, completely unnatural for the arid, salt-sprayed cliff." The DGS hummed, analyzing. This isn't engineering, he thought, unease prickling. It's cheating my principles."Elias felt a prickle of unease. He had a deep-seated, rationalist's mistrust of magic, of anything he couldn't explain or control."

They need a miracle, Elias thought, pragmatism warring with idealism. "This feels wrong, he thought. This is a crutch. This is… cheating. My utopia was about hard work, about logic and engineering, not about instant miracles. But Larra's right. They need a miracle now." He activated the module, ground trembling. "He took a deep breath, and with a silent command, activated the module." Green light pulsed from runes, wheat and barley erupting, stalks soaring. "The ground began to tremble faintly. A soft, green light pulsed from the runes etched into the plaza stones, spreading outward like a wave." The plaza bloomed gold and green, a defiant life. "Within minutes, the barren plaza was transformed into a field of shimmering gold and green." A child's laugh broke the awe, a mini-payoff.
"See? Wheat outruns Stark horses!" Corax cawed, flapping triumphantly. "Corax cawed loudly, flapping his wings in triumph. 'See? Wheat outruns Stark horses! I told you the dirt was hungry!'"
Larra touched a stalk, trembling. "It's… it's real." "Larra, her mouth agape, stumbled forward, touching a stalk of wheat with a trembling hand. 'It's… it's real.'"

Harvest chaos erupted, Larra organizing teams, her voice sharp. "The harvest was a dizzying blur of activity. Larra, her pragmatic nature returning with a vengeance, immediately took charge." The DGS conjured root-woven baskets, their earthy scent grounding the frenzy. "The DGS hummed, producing baskets woven from what looked like dried roots to aid the collection."She builds community; I build the city, Elias thought, knees easing. A boy offered a glowing seed, its pulse matching the runes. "Amidst the joyful chaos, a small boy came up to Elias, holding a handful of glowing seeds. 'They glow,' he said, his eyes wide with wonder."Valyrian power, Elias mused, pocketing it.
"He saved us," Larra said, pointing to the fields. "Join us, and we'll save more." "Larra, addressing them, spoke of the plaza's promise, of Elias's vision. 'He saved us,' she said, her voice ringing with a new certainty."
Houses rose on a terraced slope, Dornish pottery glinting. "Elias, in turn, offered them more than food. With a hum from the DGS, small houses began to form on a terraced slope below the plaza." A woman's tears fell, her basket spilling grain, sparking laughter. What, no pointy spires? Corax squawked, poking a glowing relic. "Corax, perched on the roof of one of the new houses, squawked with laughter. 'What, no pointy spires? No fancy tapestries? What kind of architect are you?'"The relic's key, Elias thought, a scout's "fiery heart" warning echoing, urging vigilance.
