Chapter 27: First Steps North
The wind-whipped North was a brutal force, snow stinging Elias's face like shards of ice, seeping into his bones as he trudged with his scouting party, boots squealing in the frost. I'm just a man with a system, . A chipped lantern hung from a scout's belt, its faint clink grounding him, while a frayed rope chafed his wrist, sore from hauling gear. A worn satchel lay in the snow, a world-in-motion pulse as wind howled through bare trees. A new sub-scene unfolded as a recruit tripped, spilling a chipped lantern's oil, an Accidental Spill sparking Tormund's roar, "Soft southerner!" easing tension with hearty laughter.
I can't believe I'm doing this. I'm a software engineer. I'm not a survivalist. I'm not a warrior, Elias thought, heart racing like a drum. Tormund chuckled at a shivering recruit. "This is a summer breeze, lad!" he roared, voice booming, snow dusting his wild red beard. "The winter's coming. You'll be begging for a warm cup of ale then."
"We'll learn to endure," Elias said, gripping a frayed rope, resolve flickering.
A new sub-scene emerged as Free Folk taught fire-building, their hands deft despite the cold, boosting survival skills, a mini-payoff strengthening confidence. Around a weirwood tree, their rituals hummed with reverence, air thick with frost and the sharp scent of sap, the tree's red eyes glowing like embers. What secrets do they guard? Elias thought, awe mixing with doubt, the pale sun fading. A scout raised his hand, voice urgent. "Riders ahead," he said, voice a low whisper. "Night's Watch."
The standoff was tense, the Watch's weathered faces grim, swords gripped tight, their leader sneering, snow catching in his cloak. "Wildlings," he growled, voice a low snarl. "They're not welcome here. Not ever."
Elias stepped forward, voice calm, hands steady despite numb fingers. "We're not here for war," he said, cutting through the wind. "We're here to warn you of a threat beyond the Wall."

We need their trust , resolve hardening like steel. The young leader lowered his weapon, doubt and trust warring in his eyes. "Jon Snow," he said, voice earnest. "He's beyond the Wall. He's been gone for days."
"Jon's missing?" Elias asked, dread coiling, a chipped lantern clinking against a scout's belt.
A new sub-scene unfolded as a Watch scout shared Jon's last known path, boosting urgency, a mini-payoff fueling purpose. The camp buzzed with organized chaos, fires crackling, air heavy with smoke and fur, snow swirling outside. Elias learned to build a long-burning fire, hands sore from a frayed rope, the skill grounding him.
Tormund spoke of Jon, voice a low growl, respect in his eyes. "A strange Crow with true north in him," he said. "He's not like the others. He sees what we see."

Jon's our ally, Elias thought, hope sparking like a flame despite the biting cold. Corax landed on a glowing firestone, cawing softly. "Hope this Crow's not lost for good," he quipped, eyes glinting with mischief, a Witty Retort sparking chuckles among the scouts.
"We'll find him," Elias said, clutching a worn satchel, resolve firm as stone.
A new sub-scene emerged as Free Folk shared tracking techniques, their voices low, boosting confidence with shared wisdom. The Wall loomed in the distance, its icy shadow a hook to Jon's fate and the alliance needed to face the Others, urging Elias to lead through the gathering storm.
