CHAPTER 11: THE CONVOLUTED CONSPIRACY
The apartment was in a state of utter despair. Leonard, Howard, and Raj were slumped on the couch, their faces long and their shoulders slumped. Sheldon was sitting in his spot, a grim, defeated look on his face. The reason for their despair? The sold-out movie premiere of "Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Motion Picture."
"It's a tragedy," Leonard said, his voice a whisper. "A cultural tragedy. The tickets are all gone. The black market sellers are charging a fortune. We'll have to wait for the DVD release."
Howard moaned. "I can't believe it. I even tried to get my mom to buy them. She told me to go get a job."
Aron, sitting on the opposite couch, quietly consulted the System.
[SYSTEM: MISDIRECTION PROTOCOL: ACTIVATE. RATIONALE: OPTIMIZE GROUP AMUSEMENT. PLAN: CONVOLUTED ALIBI FOR TICKET ACQUISITION. SOCIAL CREDIT GAIN: EXTREMELY HIGH.]
Aron pulled out his phone, a confident look on his face. "Guys, relax. I have a plan."
"A plan?" Sheldon said, his voice dripping with skepticism. "What plan could you possibly have that would acquire sold-out tickets to a major motion picture?"
[SYSTEM: MISDIRECTION PROTOCOL: PHASE 1: DIGITAL ALIBI CREATION. PHASE 2: FAKE TEXT MESSAGE GENERATION. PHASE 3: FAKE EMAIL CONFIRMATION. PHASE 4: FABRICATE A PLAUSIBLE BACKSTORY INVOLVING A MISPLACED JANITOR'S KEY.]
Aron just smiled. "I have a friend. He works at the box office. He just texted me. He found some tickets."
The group stared at him. Then, a collective cheer went up.
"You're a genius, Aron!" Leonard said, his face a mix of relief and awe.
"I am a genius," Aron said, a small, knowing smirk. He then proceeded to tell them the most ridiculous, convoluted story he could.
"My friend," Aron began, "was cleaning out the storage room, and he found a key. It was a key to a locker. Inside the locker, he found a note. The note said, 'To whoever finds this, the tickets are behind the vending machine. The code is the number of times I've been asked for a refund this month.' The number was... four hundred and twenty-seven. So he went to the vending machine, typed in the code, and a secret compartment opened up. And inside, he found... our tickets."
The group stared at him, their mouths agape.
"And he just... gave them to you?" Howard asked, his voice filled with a mixture of disbelief and wonder.
"He owes me a favor," Aron said, a deadpan look on his face.
Leonard, however, was not buying it. He looked at Aron, a new, intense suspicion in his eyes. "Aron, that's the most convoluted story I've ever heard. It sounds like something out of a 'Dan Brown' novel."
"It's called 'quantum entanglement,' Leonard," Aron said, a smile on his face. "The universe is full of coincidences. You just have to be in the right place at the right time."
The group was ecstatic. They were going to the premiere. Aron had pulled off the impossible. He had used the System to make them happy, and he had done it in a way that only added to his mystique.
As they sat in the theater, the smell of popcorn and the sound of movie trailers filling the air, Leonard leaned over to Aron. "Seriously. Who are you?"
Aron just shrugged. "I'm just a guy who likes a good movie."
Leonard just shook his head. "No. You're not. You're too lucky. Too good at everything. You're not a normal IT guy."
Sheldon, in a rare display of social pragmatism, leaned over and whispered, "Leonard. Just accept the miracle. Don't question it. You're in the right place. Just enjoy the movie."
Aron smiled. The plan had worked. He had given them a gift, a moment of joy, and he had done it with the help of his new, strange friend. He was a silent puppeteer of their lives. And he was enjoying every second of it.
[SYSTEM PING: SUSPICION LEVEL OF TARGET: LEONARD HOFSTADTER: RISING. RECOMMEND A NON-SYSTEM-ASSISTED SOCIAL CREDIT GAIN TO LOWER SUSPICION.]
A non-System assisted one. Yeah, right, Aron thought to himself. That's going to be the hard part. The real hard part. He was a puppet master, and he was getting a little too good at it. The next time, he would have to use his own, genuine skills. It was a terrifying, but necessary, step. This moment would prove to be a crucial turning point, forcing Aron to confront his reliance on the System.
