CHAPTER 28: THE PRANK PROTOCOL
Sheldon was at the podium, a laser pointer in his hand, a look of sublime confidence on his face. The lecture hall was filled with students and faculty, including Dr. Reed and her team, who sat in the front row, their faces masks of calm, professional detachment. Sheldon was about to present his findings, his "quantum quirk," to the world. And Aron, sitting in the back, knew he had to stop it. He knew that if Sheldon presented the data, he would be exposing the System's existence to a dangerous, shadowy organization.
[SYSTEM: RECOMMEND A DIVERSION. PROTOCOL: GLITCH.]
Aron pulled out his phone, his thumbs moving over the screen in a blur of motion. He didn't need a plan. The System had a protocol for everything .
Sheldon clicked his laser pointer, and the first slide of his presentation, a complex mathematical equation, appeared on the large screen behind him. But then, a second later, the slide was replaced by a picture of a kitten, its face scrunched up in a tiny, absurd snarl. The entire lecture hall, including the students, burst out in a wave of amused laughter.
Sheldon, his face a mask of furious confusion, clicked the button again. The slide reappeared, but this time, the equation was written in a bright, rainbow font, and the sound of a random sitcom laugh track echoed through the auditorium. The laughter grew louder, and a few students started to take out their phones, snapping pictures.
Aron, playing the part of the concerned IT professional, stood up and walked to the front. He knelt down next to the projector, fumbling with the cables. "I am so sorry, Dr. Cooper. It must be a server error. We've been having problems with the network all morning."
"This is an outrage!" Sheldon whispered, his voice a furious hiss. "The integrity of my presentation has been compromised!"
"I know, Sheldon," Aron said, with a quiet, practiced calm. "I know. Just give me a second." He unplugged the projector and plugged it back in again. The slides reappeared, normal again. But Dr. Reed's eyes were on him, a strange, calculating look in them. She saw a simple IT guy fixing a technical issue, but she also saw an impressive level of chaos for such a mundane problem.
After the presentation, Dr. Reed walked to the front of the hall. She was calm and composed, but her eyes, when they met Aron's, were like chips of ice. "That was a fascinating presentation, Dr. Cooper. And an even more fascinating technical issue. An impressive level of chaos for a simple server error." She looked at Aron, her eyes holding his gaze for a long moment. "Some of the most complex problems are caused by the simplest people."
Aron just shrugged, a small, innocent smile on his face. "I swear, the servers around here are just powered by squirrels on a treadmill."
Dr. Reed didn't smile. She just gave a slight nod, then walked out of the lecture hall, her team in tow. Aron felt a sense of relief, but also a rising dread. He had won the battle, but not the war.
Later, alone in a deserted hallway, Dr. Reed pulled out a device. The device was a small, sleek tablet, and it was displaying a live feed of the lecture hall, along with a stream of data. The data was a visual representation of the glitches, a chaotic, colorful mess that defied all logical explanation. The device pings with a single, clear signal. A ghost in the machine. "It's him," she said, her voice a low, chilling whisper. "He's a digital ghost." She then pulled out a small, metallic object from her pocket, and a new, more dangerous signal was sent into the network.
