Ella's POV

Rain drummed against the glass walls of my penthouse while I held a crystal glass filled with deep burgundy wine. The city sprawled below me in a wash of blurred lights, each droplet on the window creating tiny prisms that reflected my scattered thoughts.

I lifted the glass to my lips, tasting the expensive vintage. At least this bottle delivered what it promised, unlike the disappointing turns my carefully laid plans had taken recently.

The balcony door whispered open behind me. Robert emerged from inside, bringing the crisp night air with him as he pulled the door shut. His business shirt was wrinkled from the day, his tie hanging loose around his open collar.

"Drinking by yourself again?" he asked, settling into the chair next to mine.

I kept my eyes on the storm outside. "There's a bottle open in the kitchen if you want some."
