Chapter 14 - The troubled Shirakawa City

The castle sits on a small hillside. Aside from the main gate, the other three sides are close to the cliff. A dry moat runs across the main gate, and a stone bridge leads to the castle's main entrance.

As expected, when Liu Xing and the others arrived, they discovered a large, ancient seal painted on the main gate. Furthermore, with Liu Xing's relatively good eyesight, he noticed that the castle's not-so-tall walls were densely covered with ancient seals. Liu Xing was skeptical. With seals engraved on every brick and stone, he felt that in the eyes of mythical creatures, this castle might be a septic tank...

What had happened to the lord of this castle?

Liu Xing couldn't help but fall into deep thought.

The castle's main gate was a tall, solid wooden door, seemingly difficult to open by human power alone. Liu Xing felt that this door might be the first obstacle to their team's escape from Ains Town. After all, the castle walls were estimated to be about seven or eight meters high, and the other three cliffs were over twenty meters high. The chances of descending from these three walls were slim. Even if one attempted to descend the castle's main gate without a rope, they would likely have to prepare for a fatal fall.

So, Liu Xing felt that if they wanted to leave Ains Castle in twelve hours, they had no choice but to find a way through the main gate.

In the lower left corner of the castle's main gate was a small iron gate with a small red button, presumably the doorbell.

Wang Siyi, walking in the front, then performed the first check of the group run—Navigation. He scored 49/70, a success.

Wang Siyi had chosen Mingtou, so the result was relayed to every player by kp004.

Liu Xing looked at Wang Siyi with some surprise. He hadn't expected a reporter to have put so many points into Navigation. It was truly surprising.

"The road we just came from is the shortest and safest way from this castle to the town." These were Wang Siyi's first words during this run.

Liu Xing nodded and prepared to ring the doorbell. After all, the main quest required staying in the castle for more than twelve hours at a time, so the sooner he entered, the sooner he could leave.

Just as Liu Xing was about to ring the doorbell, Bai Hecheng suddenly scurried over and pushed Liu Xing out of the way.

Liu Xing asked, somewhat puzzled, "Bai Hecheng, what are you doing? Why are you pushing me out of the way?"

Bai Hecheng chuckled, pulled a piece of wire from his pocket, found the lock, inserted it, and began to tinker.

Liu Xing stared at Bai Hecheng in bewilderment. He hadn't expected this college student to even possess such a skill as lockpicking. Perhaps it will prove useful later.

But Liu Xing's thought didn't last long before he heard the result of Baihecheng's check—Lockpicking, 45/1, failed.

When players use skills they haven't learned to perform checks, they have a base value. For example, Liu Xing's jumping skill has a base value of 20 points. After all, anyone with a disability can jump. Wang Siyi's navigation skill also has a base value of 10 points. However, a more specialized skill like Lockpicking only has a base value of 1...

So, Baihecheng didn't even select the Lockpicking skill, but went ahead and tried the Lockpicking check. Liu Xing didn't know what to say to Baihecheng...

"Baihecheng, what the hell are you doing?" Although Liu Xing didn't say anything, Wang Qi, standing nearby, couldn't control his temper and rushed over to push Baihecheng away.

However, because Baihecheng's Lockpicking check failed, the castle's alarm was triggered, and a shrill siren suddenly sounded.

Bai Hecheng, the culprit, said innocently, "I just wanted to see if I could just open the door and get in. Why are you all so excited?"

Try, even with a 1% chance. Liu Xing now considered Bai Hecheng the engine of his group's annihilation.

As for Wang Qi, he was now even more tempted to attack Bai Hecheng. To prevent further incidents, Chen Ling stepped between Wang Qi and Bai Hecheng, separating them before trying to calm Wang Qi down.

Wang Siyi, on the other hand, continued to watch.

Liu Xing, observing the chaotic scene, couldn't help but shake his head and sigh. He feared this group wouldn't be able to escape...

Just then, the castle's small iron gate suddenly opened, and an elderly man who looked like a butler stepped out.

"I'm the butler of this castle. You can call me Old Wayne. May I ask who you are?" Old Wayne asked, frowning after shutting off the alarm.

Since Liu Xing was standing right in front of Wayne, he naturally stepped forward and said, "Excuse me, Mr. Wayne. We are foreign tourists, brought here by the tavern owner. My friend is quite curious. He saw a movie or TV show where a castle door lock could be easily opened with a piece of wire, so he wanted to try it out and ended up setting off the alarm. I'm so sorry."

As Liu Xing spoke, he pulled out the castle pass the tavern owner had given him from his pocket. Wang Qi and the others did the same.

Old Wayne took the castle passes from everyone and, after a quick inspection, his expression finally brightened. "I see. Since you are all visitors brought here by Old Drunkard, we welcome you to Ainsburg. However, please refrain from any unforeseen behavior."

At this point, Old Wayne glared at White River City, who smiled at him without regret.

Anthropology, 22/50, success.

Liu Xing suddenly remembered KP004's tip. He hadn't expected anyone here to have chosen a useless skill like Anthropology.

Anthropology's greatest use is determining whether an NPC or a corpse is human, or studying the customs and habits of a region (which takes a considerable amount of time). However, there are very few places where it's generally useful, making it a rather useless skill. Aside from some university professors, players of other professions generally don't choose it. At least in the group playing videos Liu Xing had seen, less than one percent of players had chosen Anthropology. So, Liu Xing hadn't expected to encounter a teammate who had chosen Anthropology in this group play.

"Everyone, please follow me. Let's go to the castle's main building first." Old Wayne politely bowed to Liu Xing and the others, and then Liu Xing and the others followed Old Wayne to the castle's main building.
