Chapter 22 - Chapter 20 – The Hidden Relic

The morning sun spilled over the palace gardens in lazy ribbons of gold, slipping across the marble paths like warm silk. The air smelled of dew, faint jasmine, and the kind of quiet that made the world feel like it was holding its breath. Compared to yesterday, Li Mei almost felt like she could breathe. Almost.

Her fingers twitched, lifting a few small cups into the air. They floated lazily, circling above her hands, catching sunlight and sparkling in gentle arcs. The magic felt familiar, like an old friend, soothing her jittery nerves.

For once, the courtyard was peaceful. No nobles screaming about spilled tea or misplaced illusions. No chandeliers threatening to plummet mid-breakfast. Just birdsong, a soft breeze, and her own attempt at calm.

Li Mei exhaled slowly, trying to anchor herself. Okay… focus. Calm. Control. Nothing explodes, no one screams. Maybe today will be normal…

Her eyes blinked, once, twice, as the message hovered before her like a hovering butterfly of doom. "Investigate… hidden magical relic… high risk…" she muttered, dragging the words out like they tasted bad. With a theatrical groan, she let the floating cups crash harmlessly into the grass. "Why can't I just have one morning with tea that doesn't involve near-death experiences?"

She pressed her palms to her face, muffling yet another dramatic sigh. "Yesterday it was a secret trial, today it's a death relic. Tomorrow, what? Celestial taxes?"

A soft, almost amused voice drifted through the air. "You handle chaos better when you talk to yourself, little maid."

Li Mei nearly leaped out of her skin. Celestia stood behind her, serene as ever, silver hair catching sunlight like a halo. The faint shimmer of magic around her made the air feel colder, sharper, alive.

"Celestia!" Li Mei squeaked, eyes wide. "A little warning? Bells? Maybe, I don't know… footsteps? You can't just appear like a ghost while I'm having a panic breakdown!"

Celestia's lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. "Perhaps. But panic seems to sharpen your mind." Her eyes glimmered like quicksilver. "The relic we speak of is no ordinary trinket. This palace contains many ancient creations, most of which sleep quietly. One, however… has begun to stir."

Li Mei's brain short-circuited. "Stir? Like… awake? Hungry? Judgy?"

"Curious," Celestia corrected, voice soft. "It will not harm unless provoked. But power like this requires awareness. Subtlety. Not… noodles."

Li Mei slumped, shoulders sinking. "I feel… targeted."

Before she could protest further, another voice, familiar and teasing, drifted from behind a flowering tree. "She's right, though. Subtlety doesn't usually top your skill list."

Jianyu stepped out of the shade, dark eyes catching the morning light, a smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. His robe was slightly undone at the collar, the smirk far too satisfied for this early hour.

Li Mei groaned, dragging a hand down her face. "Do you two just… show up whenever I'm about to completely lose it?"

Jianyu leaned casually against the tree. "It's become our morning entertainment."

Li Mei shot him a flat look. "Glad my suffering amuses you."

Her system chimed again, smugly if it had a personality.

"Fine. Fine!" Li Mei muttered under her breath, waving a hand like she was shooing trouble. "We'll go find the shiny doom ball." She looked at Celestia. "You're sure it won't… explode?"

"Not immediately," Celestia said mildly.

"Comforting," Li Mei muttered, dragging her sleeve across her face.

As the three of them wound through the palace corridors, the usual morning bustle was strangely absent. No servants rushing past, no echoes of conversation. Even the air seemed tense, humming faintly like invisible threads vibrating beneath the marble floor.

Li Mei slowed, her stomach twisting. "It's too quiet."

Jianyu glanced at her, amusement dancing in his eyes. "That's because we're heading toward the part of the palace where silence listens back."

Li Mei groaned. "You say things that do not help."

Celestia's calm voice sliced through the tension. "The relic is old… older than the palace itself. Sealed long before any of us were born. Its magic reacts to emotion, intent, and—"

"Chaos," Jianyu finished smoothly, giving Li Mei a pointed look.

Li Mei threw up her hands. "Why does everything in this palace run on chaos? Does no one like calm? Or tea?"

Her voice echoed softly down the corridor, almost as if the palace itself were snickering.

They passed through arched doorways carved with runes that pulsed faintly when Celestia walked by. Li Mei felt the hum under her skin, tiny sparks dancing along her fingertips. The deeper they went, the thicker the air became, rich with the scent of old parchment, candle wax, and something metallic that made her hairs stand on end.

Finally, they reached a far wing, where the corridor ended at an old wooden door, dark with age, its surface veined with silver symbols that glimmered faintly.

Li Mei exhaled slowly. "That's it, isn't it?"

Celestia nodded. "The chamber is sealed with layers of enchantments. You will need to use your own magic to enter—quietly. The relic is sensitive to intrusion."

Li Mei stared at the runes. "Sensitive… like emotionally sensitive or explosion sensitive?"

Jianyu smirked. "You'll find out."

She turned back to him, deadpan. "If I blow up, I'm haunting you."

He inclined his head. "Wouldn't be the first time someone tried."

Li Mei rolled her eyes, then returned her attention to the door. Palms pressed against the faintly glowing surface, she felt the magic beneath her fingers—delicate, intricate, like weaving sunlight through spider silk.

The first obstacle was almost laughably subtle—a nearly invisible filament of light stretched across the doorway. Li Mei held her breath, careful, gentle, lifting it with her magic. The filament dissolved into a wisp of mist.

She blinked at her own success. "Okay… okay. Not bad. Fingers intact."

Jianyu's shadow loomed behind her. "Careful. That was the easy one."

She cast him a skeptical look. "You say that like it's supposed to make me feel better."

Celestia's calm voice echoed softly. "Patience, little maid. Magic responds to rhythm and breath, not haste."

Li Mei exhaled, steadying her pulse. The next layer of enchantment thrummed faintly beneath her fingers, testing her resolve. She whispered to herself, Focus, Li Mei. You've survived nobles, magical birds, and your own sarcasm. You can survive this.

Slowly, she reached deeper into the magic, untangling the protective layers, careful not to trigger any alarms. The palace seemed to hold its breath around her, the silence thick and expectant.

Finally, the last enchantment dissolved with a faint sigh, and the heavy door creaked open on its own, revealing a small chamber bathed in soft silver-gold light.

Li Mei stepped inside cautiously, her sandals barely making a whisper against the marble floor. The room was small, yet breathtaking. Shelves lined the walls, carved with intricate celestial patterns, and the air shimmered with faint, ancient energy.

And there it was.

The relic hovered above a stone pedestal, a crystal orb filled with swirls of golden and silvery light that twisted like living currents. It breathed—or at least it felt alive, pulsing slowly as though it had a heartbeat of its own.

Li Mei's breath caught. Beautiful, terrifying, and entirely too aware.

Jianyu's gaze was unreadable, but the glint in his eyes said more than words ever could. "Careful," he murmured. "It's not the kind of beauty that forgives mistakes."

Celestia lingered near the doorway. "The relic reacts to emotion. Approach with focus, little maid. If you waver, it will mirror your uncertainty."

Li Mei's palms turned clammy. Focus. Curiosity, not fear. Curiosity, not fear. Her internal mantra wavered as she stepped closer. "Hi… magical relic thing. I'm Li Mei. Please don't explode."

The orb pulsed softly, golden light spreading outward, almost like a gentle nod. Tiny motes of light broke away, floating lazily in the air, forming delicate illusions—birds, foxes, and even ribbons of light that twined around her fingers.

Li Mei's lips parted in awe. "It's… playing with me?"

Jianyu's chuckle was low, amused. "Seems it likes you. Or maybe it's just laughing at you."

She narrowed her eyes. "Comforting. Really helps my nerves."

Celestia's soft approval warmed her from the doorway. "Very good, little maid. You are attuning. Let it sense your balance between humor and fear. It seems… amused."

Li Mei let out a small laugh, a real, unrestrained laugh that echoed lightly through the chamber. The orb pulsed faster, golden strands inside twisting with a curious intelligence, as though it were listening to her.

The air shifted suddenly. A warm breeze carrying the faint scent of lightning and honey made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Li Mei felt a connection—not just to the relic, but to the palace itself, to the rhythm of magic pulsing through her veins.

Then—a sound. A faint rustle behind one of the shelves. A shadow flickered.

Li Mei froze. "Um… did that shelf just move?"

Jianyu's expression hardened in an instant. "We're not alone."

From a narrow side entrance, Lady Yun appeared. Her elegant gown shimmered, catching the relic's light, her smile sharp, practiced, and deadly.

"Well, what a surprise," she purred. "The maid who juggles illusions and fortune now plays with forbidden relics."

Li Mei's stomach sank. Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no.

Celestia's gaze remained calm, her voice firm. "Lady Yun. This chamber is restricted."

Lady Yun's smile didn't falter. "Then perhaps it should have been better sealed. You allow a servant to meddle with relics, and you expect me to remain indifferent?"

[Warning: Hostile interference detected. Recommended action: distraction or subtle magical misdirection.]

Li Mei's pulse jumped. Subtlety isn't exactly my brand, but… okay. Let's try not to die.

With a flick of her fingers, she unleashed a soft burst of light across the room. Tiny glowing plates, ribbons of magic, and even a miniature illusionary cat darted between Lady Yun and the pedestal.

Lady Yun faltered, her dark energy sputtering and ricocheting harmlessly into the corner. Li Mei seized the moment, guiding the relic's light outward, stabilizing the chamber.

For a brief moment, only the gentle hum of the relic remained.

Jianyu's low voice broke the silence. "You turned an attack into a light show."

Li Mei let out a shaky laugh. "Panic makes me creative."

The relic seemed to approve, pulsing into a calm, steady rhythm.

Lady Yun's mask of composure cracked, eyes narrowing. "You mock magic itself, maid. This will not end well for you."

Li Mei gave a tired, defiant smile. "Maybe not. But I do it with style."

Celestia's voice, calm but firm, cut through the tension. "That's enough. The relic recognizes intent—and it has chosen balance over malice. You may leave, Lady Yun."

The aristocrat bowed stiffly, perfume lingering like bitterness, and departed.

Li Mei sagged onto a nearby bench, legs trembling. "I can't believe I survived that. Again."

Jianyu crouched beside her, eyes softened, a faint smirk lingering. "You didn't just survive. You outperformed an aristocrat with centuries of training… using floating dinnerware."

Li Mei groaned, burying her face in her hands. "This is not the legacy I wanted."

Celestia laughed softly, gentle as wind through the chamber. "Perhaps not the one you wanted, but the one you need. You handled danger with heart, humor, and grace. That balance is rare."

Li Mei peeked between her fingers. "Heart, humor, grace… and mild panic."

Celestia smiled faintly. "Panic can be a form of intuition."

As they left the chamber, the relic pulsed softly behind them, like a quiet blessing. Its golden glow lingered briefly on the polished marble before fading.

Li Mei glanced back. "I really hope it doesn't follow me home. Or start talking."

Jianyu brushed a lock of hair from his eyes, chuckling. "If it does, you'll manage. You always do."

Li Mei sighed. "As long as it doesn't expect noodles."

The corridor's silence returned, but a faint shimmer of magic lingered in the air—a quiet reminder that the palace still held secrets far greater than any of them could yet imagine.

Li Mei walked between Celestia's calm serenity and Jianyu's teasing warmth, a tiny smile tugging at her lips. She couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something far greater than she could yet understand.

And for the first time that day, she felt… ready.
