Chapter 26 - Chapter 26:Damn Veyra's DRONES

That same morning, a dense mist enveloped the park, the pale dawn light filtering through the towering oaks in delicate silver beams. Ezra Kane found himself pressed firmly against the bench, his heart racing violently in his chest. Just moments before, the drone's laser had seared the air in the very spot where his head had been, and the acrid scent of charred grass lingered heavily in the damp atmosphere, a stark reminder of the danger he had narrowly evaded.

Kael moved with a practiced grace, as if this chaotic scene were a well-rehearsed routine—his movements steady and impeccably precise. He raised his weapon once more, the pulse-gun emitting a striking blue light that cleaved through the mist like a blade, hitting the drone's wing squarely. The mechanical beast shuddered midair, a shower of sparks cascading down from its damaged wing as it twisted sideways, its stabilizers emitting a protesting whine that sliced through the eerie silence of the park.

With a surge of adrenaline, Ezra scrambled to his knees, clutching the bench with trembling hands for support. His emotions were a whirlwind, caught between paralyzing fear and an awe that almost rendered him breathless. Kael appeared both fearsome and stunning all at once—his trench coat splattered with mud, his jaw set in a determined line, and his eyes glimmering with a fierce intensity that spoke of the urgency of the moment.

Just as the drone regained its composure, it charged towards them with alarming speed, slicing dangerously low to the ground. Ezra's stomach plummeted at the sight. "Kael!" he shouted, dread filling his voice.

Without a moment's hesitation, Kael seized him, propelling him toward the shelter offered by an ancient, gnarled oak tree. They collided with its rough bark just as the drone unleashed its weapon yet again, the laser slicing through the branches overhead with a searing brightness.

For a fleeting moment, despair washed over Ezra as he thought their end was near. But Kael was quicker than fear itself. He rolled out from behind the protective tree, his aim steady as he took three rapid shots in succession. The third shot found its mark, piercing straight through the heart of the drone.

With a deafening shriek, the machine began to spiral out of control, sparks flying in all directions as it crashed into a nearby thicket, flames erupting and licking hungrily at the damp grass. The sharp scent of smoke combined with the fresh morning dew, creating an acrid tang that filled the air and added to the drama of their escape.

In the aftermath of the chaos, a heavy silence fell over the park, the only sounds breaking the stillness were the harsh, ragged breaths of the two men. Ezra, exhausted and shaken, leaned against the sturdy oak, his chest heaving as he struggled to regain some semblance of calm. The bandaged arm he cradled against his body throbbed painfully with each beat of his heart. Kael dropped beside him, his trench coat now caked in mud, one hand resting reassuringly on Ezra's shoulder. It was a gesture that seemed to confirm his presence was real, grounding Ezra in a moment that felt like a strange mixture of life and surrealism.
