Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The First Wave

The city was quiet—or at least it seemed so. From his vantage point atop a skyscraper, Mark Palmer scanned the streets, Nova's guidance filling his earpiece.

"Mark, multiple threats have converged downtown. Surveillance drones are coordinated, and operatives are active. This is the first wave of Phase Four."

Mark's eyes narrowed. "Good. Let's see how they handle my style."

He activated the suit's new stealth and speed modules, gliding silently between buildings. Each movement was precise, calculated—but still had that subtle flourish only Mark could pull off.

Below, three armored figures coordinated, scanning for anomalies. They didn't notice the faint shimmer above them—Mark's suit blending with the night, energy pulses almost imperceptible.

Meanwhile, at school, the tension simmered in a completely different way.

Lena caught Mark alone by the library window. Her tone was gentle, eyes curious. "You're… different lately. Something changed. Are you okay?"

Aya found him during lunch, leaning playfully over the table. "I bet you're hiding so much. What is it this time?"

Rina, sharp as ever, observed him quietly from across the classroom, scribbling in her notebook with a knowing smirk.

Mark smirked inwardly. Balance is key. He flexed subtly in thought, imagining his suit's glow, and answered carefully: "Just… extra projects. You know me."

Back on the rooftops, Mark engaged the first operative. He used mobility boosters to evade a surprise energy net, countering with a pulse strike that sent the enemy sprawling without serious harm. Nova monitored, guiding him to exploit blind spots.

"Mark, a second operative is flanking. You need to adjust your trajectory," Nova instructed.

Mark twisted mid-air, avoiding the attack, and flexed briefly—his signature move, a combination of confidence and flair. "You guys really aren't ready for me."

The third operative launched a drone swarm, testing his suit's defense systems. Mark activated adaptive energy shields, dodged incoming attacks, and used the cityscape to his advantage. Each movement was precise, yet dramatic enough that a casual observer might think it was pure luck—or art.

After neutralizing the immediate threats, Mark descended onto a rooftop, watching the rival operatives retreat. Nova's voice was calm, almost proud. "Phase Four testing complete for now. But Mark… this is only the beginning. They will adapt."

Mark flexed inside his suit, the adrenaline still coursing through him. "Let them adapt. I'll stay ahead."

Later, he returned to Shattered Realms, reviewing analytics from the mobile release and testing new console mechanics. AI companions responded dynamically, questlines adjusted to player feedback, and the world felt alive.

"Nova," Mark said thoughtfully, "the game is growing… and so is the city. Both need protection, but both need me to stay hidden."

Nova's tone softened. "Mark, the dual life is difficult. But you are managing it better than anyone could expect. Your allies—both in school and in the city—will play roles you haven't realized yet."

Mark leaned back, flexing subtly, a wry grin tugging at his lips. "Then let's keep it exciting."

Outside, hidden on a nearby rooftop, a figure observed silently, the glint of a helmet reflecting the city lights. Through a comm device, they whispered:

"Mark Palmer… he's stronger and smarter than anticipated. Prepare for direct engagement. Phase Five begins… soon."

Mark didn't see them. He didn't know what was coming. But the city, the game, and the lives of those he cared about were about to collide in ways he had never imagined.
