Wang Lai let out a shaky breath of relief when Yuhan's eyelids fluttered.

"You're alright," he whispered, pulling him into a desperate hug.

Zixuan didn't speak.

He shoved Wang Lai aside, lifted Yuhan into his arms like he weighed nothing, and stood.

"Drive me to the hospital," he said, tossing the keys at Wang Lai without turning.

The elevator ride felt endless for Zixuan he stared at Wang Lai, voice trembling.

"What have I done… Should I have taken the stairs?"

His eyes were glassy, fear shaking through him. He looked seconds away from breaking.

The sound of murmuring filled the air as workers stared as Zixuan passed, Yuhan limp in his arms.

In the car, Zixuan placed Yuhan's head on his lap, stroking his hair with slow, guilty fingers.

"When will he wake up? He's still breathing, right?"

His voice cracked each time he spoke.

Through the rear-view mirror, Wang Lai watched him, stunned.

For the first time in years…

Zixuan looked human.
