Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

As Sonia entered the hospital room, her mother's face lit up with a warm smile.

"Mum! Dad!" Sonia said happily

"Sonia, darling! I'm so glad you're here," she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she quickly gives her a chair to sit on.

"Hey, sweetie. How was the exam?" Her father asked weakly.

Sonia smiled, feeling a mix of relief and happiness.

"It was okay, Dad. I think I did alright."

Her mother leaned forward, her voice filled with enthusiasm knowing well her daughter did well.

"I'm sure you did great, dear! You're always so focused. Have you heard from the school about the results yet?"

Sonia shook her head.

"Mom! I just finished the exam. But I'll find out soon enough."

Her mother nodded, then her expression turned thoughtful.

"By the way, did you get a chance to visit your friend in the ward?"

Sonia's expression softened. "Yeah, Mom. I visited her before coming here. She's doing a bit better now."

Her mother smiled, with hues of relief

"That's good to hear. I'm glad you're keeping in touch with her."

As they chatted, Sonia noticed that her father seemed more relaxed than usual, and her mother's excitement was infectious. Maybe things were finally looking up for her family.

"Actually, dear," her mother said, "your father and I have some good news. The doctor says he's responding well to treatment, and he might be discharged soon."

Sonia's face lit up with joy. "That's amazing, Mom! I'm so happy to hear that."

The three of them shared a warm moment, basking in the positive news. But Sonia couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to her mother's story. It's been a while that feelings eroded their family. It has always been from one issue to another.

As Sonia's mother beamed with joy, Sonia couldn't help but pray in her mind that her father would maintain this newfound warmth and kindness. She hoped that he wouldn't revert to his usual distant and critical self. She wanted to savor this moment, this feeling of family unity and happiness.

Just as Sonia was lost in thought, the doctor walked into the room, a friendly smile on his face.

"Good news, everyone," he announced. "Your husband's test results are looking great, and we're going to discharge him today."

Sonia's father nodded, his expression still warm .

"That's wonderful news, Doctor. Thank you for taking good care of me."

The doctor nodded, pleased with the progress.

"We've adjusted your medication, and you're responding well. With proper care and follow-up, he should make a full recovery."

Sonia's mother was overjoyed, and Sonia felt a surge of happiness. As the doctor continued to explain the discharge procedures, Sonia's mother helped her father gather his belongings.

As they prepared to leave the hospital, Sonia dared to hope that this newfound kindness would stick. She wanted to believe that her father had finally changed, that he would continue to be supportive and loving.

But as they walked out of the hospital room, Sonia couldn't shake off the feeling that this might be just a temporary phase. He might just be a camouflage.

Sonia boarded the cab with her parents and headed home, feeling a mix of relief and exhaustion after a long day. Once home, she had a light snack and decided to take a short nap, her body craving rest after the emotional rollercoaster. A couple of hours later, she woke up refreshed and decided to visit her friend Emilee at the hospital again.

"Mum. I want to go see Emmy" She announced loudly and without waiting for reply, she ran out.

As the evening sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm orange glow over the city, Sonia made her way back to the hospital. She entered Emilee's ward, and her friend was still lying peacefully, surrounded by the soft beeps of machines and gentle hum of the hospital environment. Sonia sat down beside her, taking Emilee's hand in hers, and began to tell her all about her exam.

"I aced it, Emmy!" Sonia exclaimed, her voice barely above a whisper. "I knew all the answers, and I'm sure I'll get a great grade." Just as she finished her story, Sonia noticed Emilee's hands move slightly. Her heart skipped a beat as she leaned forward, her eyes fixed on her friend's face. She jumped up from her seat and rushed to call the doctor.

The doctor came in quickly, a look of calm professionalism on her face. She checked Emilee's vitals, her hands moving swiftly and surely. "She's coming around," the doctor said with a smile. "Let's remove the oxygen mask and see how she does."

With a few swift movements, the doctor removed the mask, and Emilee's eyes began to flutter open. Sonia's face lit up with joy, and she leaned forward, her voice filled with excitement.

"Emilee, can you hear me? Squeeze my hand if you can!"

Emilee's eyes slowly focused on Sonia's face, and a faint smile played on her lips. She tried to speak, but her voice was barely audible. Sonia leaned in closer, her ear inches from Emilee's mouth.

"Water..." Emilee whispered, her voice cracking from dryness.

Sonia quickly grabbed a cup of water from the bedside table and helped Emilee take a sip. The cool liquid seemed to revive her, and she took a few more sips before nodding weakly.

The doctor smiled, nodding in approval. "You're doing great, Emilee. Just take it easy for now. We'll get you back on your feet in no time."

Sonia beamed with joy, holding Emilee's hand tightly. "I'm so glad you're okay, Emmy. I was so worried about you." She said almost crying.

Emilee's gaze drifted to Sonia's face, and she smiled again, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thanks... Sonny," she whispered, her voice still weak but full of emotion.

As the doctor continued to monitor Emilee's progress, Sonia sat back in her chair, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. She knew Emilee still had a long road to recovery ahead, but for now, she was just grateful to see her friend's smile.

As the night wore on, Emilee's condition stabilized, and she began to drift off to sleep. Sonia stayed by her side, holding her hand and watching over her as she rested. The doctor had given her strict instructions to call for assistance if anything changed, but for now, Emilee seemed to be on the mend.

As Emilee slept, Sonia's thoughts wandered back to her exam and the relief she felt knowing she'd done her best. She smiled, thinking about how Emilee would be over the moon for her.

The hospital room was quiet, except for the soft beeping of machines and the occasional rustle of nurses' uniforms as they checked on patients. Sonia felt a sense of peace wash over her, knowing her friend was going to be okay. It was distracted by Sonia parents' arrival into the ward. Her mother shouted her name dropping her bag before hugging her on her bed.

"Thank you my daughter" Her mother cried.

"Weldone Emmy. Dad got your back" Her father said holding her hand.

After few minutes, the two parents faced Sonia.

"Sonia. Take care of her. Let's go get dinner for you too and some wears" Emilee's mother said and her father patted her and exit waving at the duo.

"Okay ma"

Just as she was starting to doze off herself, Emilee's hand twitched in hers. Sonia's eyes snapped open, and she looked at Emilee, who was now watching her with a hint of a smile.

"Hey," Emilee whispered, her voice a little stronger now.

Sonia's face lit up with joy. "Hey, blockhead! How are you feeling?"

Emilee's smile grew, and she squeezed Sonia's hand weakly.

"Better... thanks to you."

Sonia smiled back, feeling a deep connection with her friend.

"Anytime, Emmy. You're stuck with me forever."

The doctor came in, shining a light in Emilee's eyes.

"Looks like you're doing great, Emilee. We'll keep monitoring you, but I think you're on the road to a full recovery."

Sonia grinned, feeling a sense of relief and happiness drenching her. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but with Emilee on the mend, she felt like everything was going to be okay.
