Chapter 22 - Aftermath of The Laboratory

As they stumbled into the moonlight, Anne looked up at the sky, her heart thudding painfully in her chest. The world was changing, and the creatures lurking in the shadows were hungry and merciless.

"I'm sorry Anne, we couldn't do anything." Seren said as he leaned against her, his face drawn, his body racked with pain.

"It's okay Seren, they were just too strong for us, it could not be helped."

Nyx padded towards them, her fur stained with blood, her eyes glinting in the darkness.

"Let's get back to Marcus, I need to patch you up."

Seren winced as he gripped his wound, the blood oozing from between his abdomen.

They stumbled forward, their hearts heavy and their hopes dimming, but they were determined to live another day.

"Anne... do you think... that we can change anything in this world? I mean, with the amount of danger that surrounds us, I sometimes wonder if there is any hope left. What we just fought... is there a future for us to hope for?"

She glanced at him, her eyes dull with fatigue and exhaustion, but still determined to move forward. "Hope is not something we can control, but I think we have a choice: despair or having the will to live on for the future."

Nyx trotted beside her, her pace matching their own.

The three of them shared a quiet moment, their thoughts scattered and uncertain.

They knew the truth, that there were no easy answers and no quick fixes.

As they walked forward, their hearts brimming with sorrow and hope, they could feel the darkness shifting. It was a subtle change, but a change nevertheless.

"Anne, he was talking about how your body was reacting well to the Erojium... does this mean-" Seren stopped abruptly, his face pale.

She did not respond. Her mind was spinning with possibilities and fear. Was she infected? Would the Erojium change her completely? There was no way to know without getting more answers from the hooded man.

As they continued forward, the night descended on them like a shroud, hiding them from view. She could feel herself slipping away, her thoughts drifting, her body heavy with exhaustion and pain.

"We should stop, you need rest," she whispered softly to them with a worried glance.

"Just a little further," Marcus urged. Seren said nothing but shook his head slightly.

Their journey was filled with silence and trepidation, but they could not shake the feeling that danger was lurking in the shadows, waiting for them to make a mistake. Nyx whimpered in the distance, her fur stained red with dried blood from their enemies, and her eyes reflecting the same fear and weariness that the rest of them felt.

As they reached a small clearing, the sun peeked over the horizon, casting a dim, orange glow over them. Nyx yawned, her eyes drooping with weariness. Seren pulled out a worn map, his brow furrowed in concentration. "There is a town just a bit further from here."

He turned to Anne, his gaze worried.

She was quiet, her thoughts drifting, and her mind restless. She knew that they were all exhausted, but they needed to push on.

"We are basically out of supplies now. What choice do we have?" She whispered.

He reached out to comfort her, but she pulled herself away, a sudden panic rising inside her. "I want to keep going, Seren, but how can we?" she whispered.

"We will keep going because that is what Dr. Solarys would want, and that is what we must do." He replied, his tone somber.

She nodded, a sense of resolve overtaking her. She knew what must be done and would not let her emotions stop them from fulfilling their mission. She pushed aside her fears and doubts, determined to carry on.

They marched on through the forest, their pace steady and purposeful.

"It makes me wonder though, was Dr. Solarys aware of what was going on here?" She asked.

Seren bit his lip, his eyes flashing with frustration. "It's hard to say. I trust his intentions, but his methods and actions sometimes make me doubt."

She nodded, her eyes lingering on the sky above them.

As she leaned back against a tree, she could see the world beyond them slowly fading away. "It feels like this place is becoming its own world. A world where nature and chaos have merged, and nothing is familiar anymore." She mused.

Marcus stared at her, his eyes unreadable.

Nyx pressed herself against him, her soft fur brushing against his face.

He sighed, his shoulders sagging with weariness.

In this world, there are no rules, no safe places, and no light.

There is only survival.

There is no right or wrong.

It's all instinct, a desperate instinct.

That is what Marcus was thinking when he stared at Seren, his eyes flashing with grief, frustration, and fear.

"There seems to be a town up here, let's get out of here." As Anne looked down on Seren, her face grim, she couldn't help but feel a sense of dread wash over her.

"I refuse to go into another town or city." Marcus spat.

Maybe it wasn't the safest place to be, but what choice did they have?

The world seemed to blur as Anne watched Seren try to convince Marcus that it was the right move to head towards the ruins of the city. The look of disbelief on Marcus' face was mirrored on hers, but they couldn't deny the fact that their food was dwindling and they needed to find a safe place to hole up and refuel.

She shivered as she remembered the hooded man, his eyes burning into her. Something in the way he spoke and the way he acted told her that he was unlike anything she had encountered before. She hated the way her mind seemed to drift to his words, the way her heart beat faster whenever she remembered his taunts and her inability to strike back. It was as if her very being had been torn apart by him.

She shook herself, trying to regain control of her thoughts. She was the lead researcher, the one who had to keep her cool in the face of chaos. She couldn't let her fears and emotions overwhelm her. She had to stay calm, rational, and analytical.

Still, the way the hooded man had said that they had a lot to learn about Erojium made her skin crawl. Could she trust anyone here? Could she even trust herself?
