Chapter 72 - Chapter 72 : “Thunder Beneath Silent Skies”

---

The Land of Lightning — A Country in Chaos

Dark storm clouds had rolled across the jagged mountains of the Land of Lightning, casting the Yotsuki clan's stronghold in a heavy gray shroud. The towering fortress-monastery — carved directly into the cliffs — vibrated faintly as distant thunder rumbled like a living beast.

Inside the council chamber, no one spoke at first.

Not even the proud, loud, and battle-hardened Yotsuki clan dared to break the suffocating silence.

The message from the Land of Fire had arrived at dawn.

Lightning Daimyō's First Wife… executed.

Her faction… eradicated.

Her crimes… revealed to the world.

And worst of all, for the Yotsuki Clan:

The Chinoike Clan had been granted full asylum in the Land of Fire.

The revelation had cleaved through the clan like a lightning strike.

For generations, the Yotsuki had quietly positioned themselves to become Lightning Country's dominant clan. They had survived rival clans, political storms, foreign pressures, and the recklessness of nobles.

But this?

This touched upon their past, their ambitions, and their future.

At the head of the war-table, the Clan Head — Yotsuki Raiga — slowly rose to his feet. His massive frame cast a long shadow over the polished stone floor.

His voice finally broke the silence.

"…So it's true."

The elders stiffened.

The young elites lowered their gazes.

The thunder outside roared, as if to confirm his words.

Raiga's jaw tightened.

"The First Wife and her nobles murdered our Daimyō. They planned to blame the Chinoike. They nearly triggered a civil war across our Land."

The old advisor, Elder Hiraku, exhaled shakily.

"We… knew she was ambitious. We assumed she was manipulative. But this…" His voice wavered. "To kill her husband? To throw our nation into chaos for power?"

A young elite slammed his fist into the table.

"We should have exposed her earlier!"

Raiga's eyes sharpened.

"No. If we accused her without proof, we would have been branded traitors. Our clan would have been crushed by her palace faction."

The room fell silent again.

Raiga wasn't wrong.

The First Wife's influence had run deep in the palace and across the noble families. Even the Yotsuki Clan, powerful as they were, had been forced to watch cautiously from the shadows.

But now—

Now the Land of Fire had exposed everything.

The old Daimyō's Second Wife — a Chinoike — and her children had refused the throne. They had chosen to remain with their clan, abandoning all claim to power.

It changed everything.

The Yotsuki's Clan Calculated Rage

"We must respond," Elder Hiraku said firmly. "If outsiders know the truth before we do, we look incompetent. Weak."

A younger council member shook his head.

"No… not weak. But the Fire Daimyō acted decisively. He ended the faction behind the conspiracy. Meanwhile, we have yet to officially denounce them."

Another murmured:

"People will question whether we turned a blind eye…"

Raiga raised a hand and the room silenced.

"We are not fools. We will respond — but carefully. The Land of Lightning is unstable. A single misstep can ignite a rebellion or another power vacuum."

He turned toward the tall windows overlooking the storm.

"From this moment… the Yotsuki Clan will declare complete loyalty to the new Daimyō."

A ripple of shock passed through the council.

The Yotsuki Clan were strong — some whispered they were the strongest clan in Lightning Country already — but public loyalty to the new Daimyō had enormous political consequences.

One elder leaned forward.

"Raiga-sama… once we pledge loyalty, the new Daimyō will have no choice but to acknowledge us as the stabilizing pillar of the Land."

Raiga's lips curved into a subtle, predatory smile.

"Exactly."

Another elder's eyes widened.

"And with his legal endorsement… we can take over the abandoned lands of the Chinoike clan."

Lightning crackled outside the window — perfectly timed.

The council understood.

This was their moment.

The Chinoike Clan were gone.

Their territories in the Land of Lightning were unclaimed, vulnerable, and politically deadly to any clan that moved without approval.

But if the new Daimyō granted permission?

It would be legal.

It would be official.

It would be unstoppable.

And with those lands, the Yotsuki Clan would become the undisputed top clan of the Land of Lightning.

The path had just revealed itself.

The Youth Ninja Competition — A Gathering Storm

After the tension finally eased, a younger elite cleared his throat.

"There is also the upcoming Land of Lightning Youth Ninja Competition."

The elders murmured.

This was their pride — their proving ground.

Only clans of the Land of Lightning could participate, and prestige from the competition shaped alliances and power balances for decades.

Elder Hiraku stroked his beard.

"It will be the first major event after the national turmoil… and all eyes will be upon us."

Raiga nodded.

"Good. Let them look. Let them see our strength. Let them see our unity under the new Daimyō."

A strategist added:

"The public still sees us as the backbone of the nation. If our genin dominate the tournament… the Yotsuki will regain trust. And fear."

Another agreed.

"It will also reaffirm us as the obvious guardians of the Lightning throne."

A murmur spread — approval, ambition, anticipation.

The Youth Ninja Competition wasn't just a tournament.

It was a declaration.

It was a battlefield of reputation.

And the Yotsuki Clan intended to dominate it.

Raiga raised his hand.

"We will send our strongest youths — not just the heirs, but every prodigy. The world will see what the Yotsuki Clan are capable of."

The room erupted in agreement.

Weapons clanged.

Fists pounded the table.

Thunder cracked overhead.

The storm matched their rising determination.

Whispers of the Future — A Kingdom to Seize

When the noise calmed, Elder Hiraku spoke again.

"The Chinoike clan's former territory… once we gain it legally… what's the plan?"

The room turned toward Raiga.

He answered without hesitation.

"We fortify it. Build settlements. Send loyal families. Spread our influence. Over time, the land will become synonymous with the Yotsuki Clan territory."

Another strategist nodded.

"Once that region becomes our new heartland, our clan will stand above all others."

"And the new Daimyō will depend on us," someone added. "Not just politically — but for military strength and national unity."

Raiga smirked.

"With the Chinoike gone, there is no clan left to challenge our ascent. The future Daimyōs … will come from us."

The room glowed with confidence and ambition.

But beneath it all…

A faint tension lingered.

A question hovering like a ghost.

Would the Fire Daimyō protecting the Chinoike Clan interfere with their ambitions?

Would outsiders — especially the Uchiha Clan or Hagoromo Clan — notice their moves?

Would the Chinoike clan, now living under Fire protection, someday seek revenge for their former territory in Land of lightning?

Even Raiga felt a faint chill.

Not fear.

But anticipation.

Storms always came before transitions of power.

And he intended to stand above the storm.

A Shadow Enters the Council Chamber

Suddenly—

A messenger burst through the council room doors, dropping to one knee, breathing hard.

"Clan Head Raiga-sama!"

Raiga stiffened.

"Speak."

The messenger swallowed.

"A new report from our scouts… near the Fire border."

The elders exchanged wary glances.

"What report?" Raiga asked.

The messenger's voice trembled for the slightest moment.

"—The Chinoike clan has arrived safely in the Land of Fire. Their settlement is being prepared between the Uchiha Clan and Hagoromo Clan territories."

The room froze.

Absolute, stunned silence.

Elder Hiraku whispered:

"…Between them? Not near them — but between them?"

The messenger nodded.

"Yes. And both clans will be observing the Chinoike Clan … closely. There may even be a future alliance between them."

A slow, suffocating dread crawled down the spines of the Yotsuki council.

An alliance…

Between Uchiha Clan …

And Hagoromo Clan …

And Chinoike Clan …

Under the Fire Daimyō's blessing.

That was not a clan alliance.

That was the foundation of a military superpower, rising beside their borders.

Raiga's hand tightened around the table until the wood cracked.

"This… changes everything."

The room held its breath.

Raiga slowly raised his head.

His eyes were cold.

His anger was controlled.

His ambition was undeterred.

"…Summon the war council. Tonight."

The messenger swallowed hard.

"Yes, Raiga-sama!"

He vanished instantly.

The room fell into a heavy hush.

The Yotsuki elders exchanged tense glances.

They all knew it.

Whatever came next…

would shape the future of the Land of Lightning for generations to come.

And so…

Raiga turned toward the storm-filled horizon.

Thunder split the sky behind him.

Softly… dangerously… he whispered:

"…If the Fire Country forms a second tri-clan alliance… then we must move faster."

Lightning illuminated his silhouette.

"Before we are the ones surrounded."
