Chapter 3 - Chapter 2 - The Park

It was supposed to be a beautiful day. The sun beat down on the pavement, warming the air with the sweet scent of funnel cakes and cotton candy.

Jennifer Wyatt was busy laughing and taking photos with other parents, her voice carrying above the hum of the games and chatter of the crowd. Maria had been sent to buy ice cream, the sound of her hurried footsteps fading into the distance. That left the twins alone near the ferris wheel.

"Watch your brother," Jennifer snapped before striding away.

Kiara sat on a bench a few metres back, sketchbook in her lap, the pencil scratching against the paper as she doodled. She kept her eyes on Kyle, her heart swelling with love and concern. She knew he would never listen to her but kept her eyes on him nonetheless.

Kyle, restless as always, suddenly bent down. A glint of metal caught his eye.

"A watch!" he called, holding it up. "Maybe we should ask around for the owner."

Kiara frowned. "Leave it, Kyle. Whoever lost it will come back for it."

But Kyle never listened. He dashed off toward the crowd, stopping strangers, showing them the watch. The sound of his laughter and the murmur of the crowd created a sense of normalcy, but Kiara's instincts were on high alert.

And that was when she noticed him.

The man in the black suit stood out in the sea of casual clothes, his presence seeming to draw the air out of the atmosphere.
