Chapter 35 - A Little Fun time in Secret Realm

The cavern descended at a sharp, forty-degree incline, plunging away from the Ashen Gorge and into the claustrophobic bowels of the Black Crag.

Here, the air was thick, laden with caustic sulfur vapors and the damp, metallic stench of ancient bone yards. Luminous phosphor-moss clung to the jagged volcanic stone, casting an eerie, pale-green glow over our boots as we moved through the narrowing tunnels.

Every ten paces, the stone walls vibrated with low, rhythmic scraping sounds: the clicking of hundreds of bio-metallic legs, the hissing of acidic glands, and the deep, territorial grunts of subterranean rift beasts.

Lina kept pace right beside me, but her fingers were still wrapped tightly around my left wrist.

She hadn't let go since the gorge. It wasn't a romantic clasp—more of an anchor, as if she were terrified that if she released her grip, I would dissolve back into that bloodthirsty wraith who tore human limbs apart with bare hands.

"Amar," she whispered, her voice bouncing faintly off the damp rock. She reached up with a soft, clean handkerchief she had fished out of her uniform pocket, gently dabbing at a stray speck of dried crimson near the corner of my mouth. "Stop walking for two seconds. You still have dirt on your face."

I paused mid-stride, turning my head slightly.

Her amber eyes were entirely focused on my cheekbone. She stood on the tips of her combat boots, leaning close enough that the scent of her hair—clean, sweet, carrying a faint hint of roasted tea from our morning tea at the estate—completely overpowered the sulfur in the cave.

"It's just beast ash, Lina," I murmured, watching the delicate curve of her nose.

"It is not beast ash; it's blood, you lunatic," she scolded softly, though her lower lip gave a tiny, involuntary quiver. "You act like an untouchable young master in public, but the moment you get angry, you look like a rabid street dog. If you walk into another fight looking like a butcher, people will think I'm traveling with a feral beast."

A low, genuine laugh rumbled in my chest.

Back in New York, whenever I spent seventy hours straight in the bio-lab and walked into our apartment with unwashed hair and chemical stains on my lab coat, she had used that exact same scolding tone while shoving a wet towel into my hands.

"And whose fault is it that the beast had to come out?" I asked, my voice dropping into that quiet, rhythmic purr.

Lina's hand froze against my jawline. Her cheeks suddenly bloomed with a soft, furious pink that had nothing to do with martial heat. She cleared her throat awkwardly, quickly pulling her hand back and stuffing the stained handkerchief into her belt pouch.

"I-I didn't ask you to tear his arm off," she muttered under her breath, turning her face away, though her fingers unconsciously crept back down and caught the cuff of my dark sleeve. "You're just reckless."

Inside her sea of consciousness, a heavy, long-suffering sigh echoed through the void.

"Look at you," the Sovereign Dragon Empress grumbled, sounding profoundly exhausted. "A bloodthirsty calamity on your left, a cavern teeming with flesh-eating predators on your right, and you two are playing house in a ditch. Girl, wipe the blush off your face before an abyssal scorpion snatches your ears. Young people now a days are really reckless."

Lina bit her inner lip, mentally kicking the Empress's voice into a corner of her mind. 'Senior, please be quiet. I'm just making sure he doesn't lose his sanity again.'

"Hmph! You tell yourself that, child. Your heartbeat has sped up by thirty percent, and not a single drop of it is from fear of the dark."

Lina pushed the thought away, stepping forward to peer over the edge of the rocky ledge we had just reached.

The narrow path abruptly ended, opening into a massive, sunken subterranean hollow shaped like an inverted dome. The ceiling soared sixty feet above, dripping with luminous green sludge, while the floor was a churning, writhing carpet of black obsidian carapaces.

Scores of Stage 2 Chitin-Prowlers—vicious, multi-legged beasts the size of wolves, covered in serrated bio-metallic shells—were scuttling over mounds of picked-clean ribcages. And resting in the deep silt at the center were two colossal shapes: Stage 3 Toxic Basilisks. Their forty-foot serpentine bodies were slick with glowing purple venom, their heavy, hooded heads resting lazily against volcanic boulders.

The moment our silhouettes appeared on the upper terrace, the cavern went dead silent for a fraction of a second.

Then, three hundred pairs of multifaceted red eyes snapped upward.

SKRRRRR! HIIIIISS!

A deafening, shrill shriek reverberated through the hollow. The Chitin-Prowlers surged up the rocky walls like an oily black wave, their sickle-claws gouging deep furrows into the stone, while the two massive Basilisks coiled their muscular tails, their jaws unhinging to spew twin geysers of bubbling, violet acid straight toward our platform!

"Amar, get behind me!" Lina shouted instantly.

Her sky-iron rapier cleared its sheath with a crisp, ringing hiss. The golden radiance of her Stage 2 Martial Adept dragon foundation flared to life, her hair whipping wildly as a shimmering, translucent wall of golden dragon-scales manifested in front of us to block the incoming acid.

She braced her boots against the stone, ready to take the brunt of the corrosive blast to protect me.

I didn't let her.

I stepped smoothly in front of her raised blade, my left arm circling her waist from behind and pulling her back against my chest with effortless, iron-clad strength.

"Amar?!" she gasped, her back pressed flush against my coat, her amber eyes widening in shock as she felt the sheer, immovable solidness of my frame. "What are you doing?! That acid will melt through standard steel!"

"I told you outside," I whispered right against the shell of her ear, my warm breath making her neck prickle with goosebumps despite the roaring horde charging toward us. "You don't need to block anything when you're standing with me."

Before she could struggle, I raised my right palm toward the cavern below.

I didn't bother using my concealed Ice World talent. Against living, breathing biological vessels, martial magic was too inefficient.

Active Aerosol Exhalation: Full Capacity.

WHOOSH.

From my open palm and lungs, an invisible, pressurized storm of two hundred million active Bacteriophage Clones billowed into the cavern air. The microscopic shroud met the incoming twin torrents of purple basilisk acid head-on.

The acid didn't splash onto our boots.

The moment the corrosive liquid made contact with my aerosol wave, the stolen Toxic Immunity lattice beneath my skin and the phages themselves greedily drank the chemical compound dry, neutralizing the caustic enzymes and converting the heat into a harmless thermal breeze that merely fluttered Lina's ponytail.

Lina blinked, her breath catching in her throat. "The... the poison... it's gone?"

"Watch," I murmured softly, my chin resting lightly near her shoulder, keeping my arm locked securely around her waist.

Down in the pit, the invisible slaughter began.

To the charging horde of three hundred Chitin-Prowlers, the airborne draft tasted like nothing. But in the sub-microscopic realm, my Z-rank phages rained down upon their open breathing spiracles and mouthparts like obsidian harpoons.

The alien rift beasts were packed to the brim with volatile, fast-mutating digestive bacteria. To ordinary martial artists, those bacteria caused necrotizing wound infections.

To my Bacteriophage Clone, it was an infinite buffet of rich, undefended protein.

Attach. Penetrate. Hijack.

Click! Click! Click!

Two hundred million phages anchored onto the bacterial membranes inside the beasts' guts and lungs. The alien microbes were commandeered in microseconds, their rapid-fire cellular machinery forced to stop synthesizing beast bile and start mass-producing viral capsids.

The front line of sixty Prowlers suddenly locked up mid-leap.

Their multi-jointed legs spasmed, their glossy obsidian shells turning a sickly, brittle chalk-white as every drop of biological fluid and nutrient was voraciously consumed by the billions of phages multiplying within their organs.

CRACK! CRACK! BOOM!

A rapid-fire series of wet, muffled pops echoed from below.

The Prowlers didn't just collapse; their dried-out carapaces shattered into fine, pale-gray dust, scattering across the volcanic rocks like powdered chalk.

At the bottom of the hollow, the two colossal Basilisks let out agonized, gargling roars. Their massive serpentine bodies swelled for three terrifying seconds before deflating like punctured leather bags, their forty-foot frames collapsing into dry, hollow husks of brittle scale and bone.

In less than ten seconds, the writhing, terrifying nest of over three hundred beasts had been wiped clean off the earth.

Not a single drop of blood remained. Only mounds of gray mineral ash and glowing, unblemished beast cores littering the silt.

The cavern fell dead silent.

Lina stood completely still within the circle of my arm, her rapier lowered, her eyes wide as saucers as she stared at the empty pit.

"They... they just turned to dust," she whispered, her voice tinged with sheer, disbelieving awe. She slowly turned her head, looking up at my face from only inches away. "Amar... what kind of power is this? You didn't even use your sword."

"A little family trade secret," I said smoothly, a faint, teasing smirk touching my lips. "Useful for pest control, don't you think?"

Lina looked at my smirk, then down at my arm still wrapped tightly around her waist.

Her mind finally registered just how close we were standing. Her back was pressed against my chest, her hand was resting against my forearm, and my face was barely three inches from hers.

Her face flared bright red.

"A-Are you planning on holding me like this all day?" she squeaked, hurriedly using her elbow to give my ribs a light, indignant poke. "The beasts are dead! Let go!"

"I could," I replied honestly, not budging an inch, my arm remaining like an iron band. "You fit quite nicely right here."

"Amar!" she hissed, though there was zero anger in her voice—only a flustered, chaotic embarrassment that made her amber eyes sparkle. "You're doing it again! Acting like some shameless rogue!"

I chuckled softly, finally relenting and loosening my grip.

She immediately took two quick steps forward, spinning around to face me while smoothing down her combat jacket, trying desperately to regain her dignified, martial composure. Yet, even as she glared at me with mock annoyance, her gaze lingered on my eyes—noticing that the terrifying, pitch-black void that had consumed me in the gorge had completely melted away, replaced by the gentle, familiar warmth she had grown accustomed to.

'He didn't hurt me,' she thought to herself, a strange, sweet ache blooming deep in her chest. 'Even when he uses that terrifying, godless power... he pulls me behind him first.'

Before she could speak again, a howling, sub-microscopic wind surged up from the cavern floor.

WHIRRRR!

Four hundred and thirty million newly replicated phages returned in a silent, invisible tide, pouring back through my open pores and vascular network.

CRACK.

A deep, resonant vibration shook through my skeleton.

One billion clones.

The Z-rank talent had finally crossed its first evolutionary threshold. My muscles condensed with the resilience of ancient ironwood, and the viral lattice beneath my skin settled into an impenetrable, microscopic armor.

I stretched my fingers, feeling the terrifying, god-like vitality humming in my veins.

"Amar?" Lina asked softly, stepping closer, sensing the subtle, invisible shift in the air around me. "Did something happen?"

"Nothing bad," I replied softly, reaching down and naturally taking her hand into mine once more.

This time, she didn't pull away. Her fingers curled gently around mine, accepting the warmth of my palm without a single word of protest.

"Let's go collect those beast cores," I said, leading her down the rocky path toward the peaceful, ash-strewn cavern floor. "We have a tournament to win."
