Chapter 26 - chapter 26: Fire and scales

A month had passed since Willow had been working on many missions, strength returned, and heart tempered through the rigors of recovery. Now, her footsteps echoed softly along the dirt path that wound through the early morning forest. Sunlight filtered down through the trees, casting dappled gold across her haori. She traveled light, alone, by choice. Kokushibo and Rui remained back at the Butterfly Estate. While her father had offered to accompany her, she had gently refused. This was her first mission back — she wanted to face it on her own. At least, that was the plan.

She sighed as the steady flapping of wings approached. A shadow swooped low before perching dramatically on a crooked tree branch just ahead.

"CAW! WILLOW TSUGIKUNI! LISTEN CLOSELY!" Philza, her Kasugai crow, cried.

"I'm listening," Willow said, amused. "What's the mission, Philza?"

The crow puffed up with pride. "YOU WILL RENDEZVOUS WITH KYOJURO RENGOKU, FLAME HASHIRA, FOR JOINT MISSION. YOUR TARGET IS A DEMON TERRORIZING TRAVELERS ALONG THE HILLSIDE BORDER OF MINAMO VILLAGE. REPORT IMMEDIATELY."

Willow blinked. "Wait, I'm working with Rengoku?"

"YES! RENGOKU! DO NOT BE LATE!" Philza cawed once more and took flight, disappearing into the morning sky.

Willow stood there for a moment, brows raised.

"Rengoku…? Well, I guess I'm not doing this alone after all." She tugged her sword's hilt slightly, feeling the warmth of its power humming at her side. A subtle grin crossed her lips.

"Guess I'll have to keep up."

It didn't take long for Willow to arrive at the rendezvous point, a small rest stop where the trees parted to reveal an overlook of the distant village below. And there he was — standing tall and proud, the red and gold of his flame-patterned haori catching the sun like fire itself.

"Ah! Willow!" Rengoku called as soon as he saw her, his voice booming with enthusiasm.

There he was—Kyojuro Rengoku, standing tall and proud beneath the outpost's torii gate, his vibrant yellow-and-red hair blowing wildly in the breeze like fire itself. He expression was lit up in a joyous smile.

"Rengoku!" she said with a polite bow.

He crossed the short distance in a few strides and clapped a hand to his chest. "What an honor it is to see you again! You look well!"

Willow gave a small smile. "I've recovered. It's good to see you too."

Rengoku nodded vigorously. "Excellent! I was pleased when I received the mission notice that we would be working together. You have great promise, Willow."

Willow's cheeks warmed faintly. "Thank you. I'll do my best not to disappoint."

"I have no doubt!"

He nodded approvingly, then motioned toward the valley. "We've received word of multiple disappearances in this region. Locals say the demon drags travelers into the forests and leaves no trace. It's cowardly work — targeting the weak and unarmed."

Willow nodded. "So, we have until sunset to prepare."

"Exactly!" Kyojuro clapped his hands. "Until then, we rest, observe, and prepare the field for battle!"

They descended toward the village together, their conversation flowing easily. Kyojuro asked her questions — about her training, her sword style, and her thoughts on the people of the Butterfly Estate. She answered honestly, but she was careful with her words, especially when it came to Kokushibo or Rui. Still, Kyojuro's warmth made it easy to be comfortable around him.

"So your breathing style," he said as they walked a quiet trail near the village perimeter. "Dragon Breathing… I could sense the strength in it when we met again during the trial. It's unlike anything I've ever seen."

"It's a blend of techniques," Willow replied. "Born from a lot of trial and error. But it works for me."

Kyojuro's eyes gleamed with admiration. "To forge your own path, while still honoring the traditions of the Corps — splendid! Truly splendid!"

Willow looked away, a bit flustered. "Thanks."

They set traps through the trees, small alarm bells strung on fishing wire. Willow, using her Thirteenth Form: Keen Senses , tracked the faintest signs of disturbance — a bent branch, a bloodied hairpin, the distant scent of blood clinging to bark. Kyojuro watched her work with quiet appreciation.

"Impressive senses," he commented.

"It helps," she said. "Especially with demons that like to hide."

The sun finally dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in amber and rose. The bells rang not long after.

They both heard it — the faint tinkling of metal, barely audible above the chirping of crickets. Kyojuro nodded once.

"It's time."

They raced into the woods. The scent of blood hit them like a wave. Willow took the lead, eyes glowing faintly in the dark. A scream pierced the night, ragged and terrified.

"North!" she called, veering sharply through the trees.

They burst into a clearing where a demon loomed over a man, claws raised. The creature was twisted and hunched, with spindly limbs and a gaping jaw that split far too wide.

"PREY," it hissed, eyes narrowing.

"Not tonight," Willow said, already drawing her blade.

"FLAME BREATHING — SECOND FORM: RISING SCORCHING SUN!" Kyojuro charged first, his blade glowing with radiant heat.

Willow followed instantly.

"DRAGON BREATHING — SECOND FORM: RAZOR WIND!"

Their combined assault struck like a storm. Kyojuro's flame-imbued slash lit the clearing in a golden blaze, while Willow's rapid barrage of cuts tore into the demon's side, preventing it from regenerating.

It screeched, limbs flailing, retreating into mist and shadow. But Willow's eyes tracked its aura — she could see the distortion in the air.

Thirteenth Form: Keen Senses.

"There!" she called. "Behind the tree!"

Kyojuro didn't hesitate. He spun, blade igniting. "FIRST FORM: UNKNOWING FIRE!"

The strike hit home, cleaving into the demon's midsection. Blood splattered across the earth, steaming from the heat.

But the demon laughed — its flesh knitting slowly back together. "You'll have to do more than that!"

Willow narrowed her eyes. "Let's make it permanent."

She bit her thumb, coating her blade with her blood — the edge shimmered in red.

"DRAGON BREATHING — FOURTH FORM: DRAGON'S BLOOD!"

Her slash tore through the demon's leg, and the poisoned blood sizzled into the wound. The demon shrieked, stumbling.

It tried to leap into the trees — but Willow was already above it.

"THIRD FORM: FLYING CRASH!"

She came down like a meteor, her blade cleaving through its skull in a single, devastating blow.

The demon crumbled. Its body twitched once. Then, silence.

Willow exhaled, her body glowing faintly in the moonlight.

Kyojuro stepped beside her, grinning. "Truly incredible! Your style is fierce and elegant — like the dragon it was named for!"

Willow sheathed her sword slowly. "Thanks. You weren't too bad yourself."

They shared a laugh as the forest settled back into stillness.

Silence returned.

Willow stepped back, wiping her blade clean.

Kyojuro stood tall, then looked at her with deep admiration. "You are truly formidable, Willow. Your technique... your resolve… It's worthy of your name."

She glanced at him, the wind tugging gently at her hair. "Thank you. And you… fight like the blazing sun."

"HAHAHA! I shall take that as the highest compliment!"

They began the trek back to the nearest rest point. Along the way, Rengoku asked, "What drives you, Willow? Why did you take up the sword?"

She paused for a long moment. "To protect those who can't protect themselves. To stop the cycle of pain. And to… rewrite the fate I was given."

He nodded slowly, looking at her with new understanding. "You carry a heavy burden. But remember, you don't have to bear it alone. There are comrades who will stand with you. Like me."

She blinked. "You'd stand with someone like me?"

He grinned. "You're not just 'someone like' anything. You are you . And that is enough."

The fire in his spirit… it warmed something deep inside her.

The night wind carried his words, soft and true.

The fire in the shadows had been vanquished — and in its place, the beginning of a deep bond burned quietly between them.
