Drip… drip… The tree trembled, its bark glistening with sudden moisture. Within minutes, the parasite fused completely with the tree's life force. The once ordinary tree began to quiver violently, its branches twitching as though it were breathing, as though something alien had been born inside it. The parasite spread quickly, using the root network beneath the ground like an underground web to travel to other trees. Wherever the parasite passed, the soil darkened, becoming moist and strangely warm, almost alive, pulsing faintly like flesh.
The first tree to be fully taken over let out a low, creaking groan, its trunk expanding and splitting in places as red, vein-like patterns spread across the bark, pulsing like living arteries. Its leaves shuddered violently, and thick, sweet nectar began to drip from its branches, filling the air with a heavy, intoxicating fragrance that spread through the forest like a seductive fog. Small forest creatures — rabbits, squirrels, even insects — crept closer, drawn by the irresistible scent. She stumbled back, then bolted from the room in a panic. "Why did brother wake up early today? He always wakes up late! I didn't even get to kiss him properly for two hours!" she thought while running. For five years, Alena had been sneaking into her brother's room every morning to kiss him while he slept, and Jule had never noticed — until now.
Jule, however, said nothing. He didn't want to embarrass her or make her sad. He loved her smile and wanted to let her do as she wished, waiting for the day she would tell him everything herself. He sighed softly, then focused back on the system that had awakened him.
"System," he said mentally.
