Chapter 2 - the first night

Moving his feet faster and faster trying to beat the suffocation of the buildings. Putting his foot down he hears a scraping sound against the building. Noticing how he was moving slower than before and that his vision is becoming more blurry, he ditches the bag and keeps moving.

Finally the edge of the building was barely visible. It looked like an unachievable feat to get here. The sky was barely visible, the brightness of the sky and sun so close.

Rayne's legs start to burn. The burn gets so unbearable where he collapses. Clawing at the side of the buildings to pick himself up. In the process his fingernails start to come off. Bits of skin and chunks of nail are falling to the ground with a plip sound.

The sound was weirdly comforting to him. It feels like being freed from some invisible shackles that bound him to the world.

He finds some grip on the building after tearing his fingers to shreds. The pain in his hands blinded him from the pain in his legs. Finally so close to the exit only another couple of steps.

He can feel the warmth of the sun, the fresh air he craves after being stuck to this miserable room for days.

He moves at his top speed towards his future, the escape needed. Just when he was about to reach it…his foot caught on something. And in the next moment he felt the ground.

Half his body was still in the small crevice between buildings and the other half was outside on the sidewalk.

The people looked down at him. This weird looking boy with brown hair has average features and his face and hands covered in blood.

So tired from fighting his way between buildings to a new freedom he lays there not moving. The people poke at him to make sure he isn't dead. The pain of the walking canes and hands hitting him was nothing compared to the pain of his hands, face and legs.

After some time the people gave up and moved on with their lives. Rayne, feeling the pain but more dulled, gets up.

Moving throughout the city he notices that the lights in the street lamps were on. Moving closer to them he also notices that the closer he gets the warmer it gets. Finally he understands that they are candles in them.

Not really caring what happens to himself he hits the cover with a stone from the cobbled ground. Hitting it once doesn't do anything but dent it. The second hit he hears the clang of rock on metal. Third, the sound of metal falling is heard.

Sticking his hand inside it he grabs the candle. The hot wax melting into his hand.

'Just more pain' Rayne thinks with disappointment.

Not wanting to deal with more pain he takes the candle, raises it over his head and throws it at the building across the way. The candle hits the side of the building. The candle's wax slowly slid down the building.

Looking at his hands he sees the redness with bubbles forming and so much dried blood racing down his hand towards his arm. Walking aimlessly his breathing grows sharper and his breath forms in front of him.

Not thinking much of it he puts on the black jacket he took from his room. The jacket doesn't do much since he starts shivering to the point where it gets unbearable.

Thinking quickly of all the possible places to go for shelter.

'The main park has some free shelter but it needs to get cleared before morning.'

The next thought was less reasonable.

'I could go back home and stay there for the night.'

'No I can't go back'.

The last thought was worse than the other two but it was the one he settled on.

'Go to whatever that one family's house was called and stay there for the night and maybe a couple more days'

The only problem with that thought was that they were across the city from where he was.

'By the time I get there I'll probably freeze.'

Not caring about what happens to himself he picks up his pace to jog. The lights and sky and his breath were blurring together to form this beautiful image of light dark and a bridge. Jogging he was warming up quite a bit but it would only last until he stopped.

The pain that he was experiencing earlier was also easing up.

The small amount of light coming through the buildings making their shadows appear in the streets wasn't a good sign. He was already moving with as much speed as he could but even now he was still too slow.

He could see the house just barely in the distance. The outline of it in the morning sun was something Rayne never thought he'd see in his life. The sun was outlining the house perfectly. He was now in the rich city.

Sprinting towards the house he made it before anyone saw him. Going around the back and towards the window he knew was unlocked. It was the only window on the ground floor and everyone in the rich city had windows unlocked. If they didn't it would make them look poor since they cared if they got robbed.

Hearing them. He opens the window with quick precision. He puts his hands on the sill again and tries to lift himself into the house but the pain in his hands shot through his body when he put it on there.

'Think, think. If they catch me I'm dead'

Mind racing and pain going through his body numbing his mind making it hard to think. Looking around in the back.

'Why the fuck do rich people have nothing in the back'

Seeing stairs he decided to launch himself off them into the building. Climbing the stairs he hears them getting closer and closer to the hooves beating on the cobbled roads. The shouting of the people, the amount of them.

The stair felt like nothing under his feet.

'One, two, three'

On three he launched himself with everything left in him. He makes it through the window. Getting up quickly he turns to the window and closes it. Habit strikes him and he turns the lock towards the left. With a click he leaves the room
