Chapter 5 - Distant Memories

Alone in the villa, Ailon released a breath. He knew very well that all he could do was to start small and work his way up. He wasn't able to tell her outright, and she had to realise it herself. He could tell her, but honestly, she wouldn't believe it. She needed to experience it herself for any of it to make sense. And the best way to trigger it was violence or self-preservation.

If someone were to walk up to you and say Hey, you have another soul in your body. I'm pretty sure they would be laughed at, yelled at or told they were crazy. And Ailon himself had no way to prove it. If he showed her, then that would open another can of worms. And he preferred not to add any problem to the already growing problems they both had at the moment.

Especially since he didn't know all the details. Which might sound hard to believe. But according to how stubborn that soul is, it doesn't make sense to ask. But, no matter what, they just had to do what they needed to do and make things work. Those people were already closing in on them, and if she didn't wake up, it would only be a matter of time before she was captured, or worse.

Sprawled on the couch, he couldn't help but sigh. He knew about the soul since he was young. The first time he hurt someone, the soul manifested. He was in dire straits at the time. That person almost killed him. It was one of their people. Even to this day, he still isn't sure how they keep finding them. He was six at the time, and one of the older people from the orphanage had said they wanted to take him out for the day.

This was someone who was about to age out of the system. He started befriending Ailon a few months before he decided he wanted to take him out. He would usually buy him nice things and promised that in a few months, when he had enough money, he would take him out to an amusement park.

As a child who had never been anywhere but school and the orphanage, having an older brother who was fond of him and wanted to take him out to have fun, he was looking forward to it. It was one of the few hopes he had in his life at the time.

But unfortunately, hope is the thing he lost that night. There are good and bad memories of that day. He really did bring Ailon to the amusement park. He could ride the rides, eat all kinds of food. He enjoyed that day as if it would never happen again.

By the time they left, it was getting dark. The young man told him they would get dinner before going back to the orphanage. While they were eating, he could feel himself starting to fall asleep. He tried as hard as he could to stay awake. He felt that if he fell asleep, the day would end, and he wouldn't be able to continue being this happy.

When he woke up, he found himself being taken out of a car. It wasn't until they were walking towards a cabin in a wooded area that he realised what was happening and started to struggle. The young man was nowhere to be seen, and he was panicking, thinking something had happened to him. It wasn't until everything had ended that he knew he had sold him for money.

He was thrown into the cabin, and the door closed behind him. It was pitch black. He didn't notice before that the windows in the cabin had been covered, not allowing any light to come in. The only light in the room was a faint sliver of light that came from the base of the door. He groped around trying to get his bearings. It wasn't long before he touched a shoe. Feeling his way up, he realised someone was actually standing there.

He couldn't help but ask for help. But the person made no sound, no attempt to move. Just standing there. His entire body blended into the darkness, save for the eyes. So cold that it sent chills down his spine. He would never forget those red, bloodthirsty eyes, the way they lock on to him when they noticed him looking.

"She needs to wake up before something happens to her." Ailon sighed. He remembered that day again. He thought about putting Ember in that kind of situation to see if it would trigger something. But no matter how much he thought about it, he couldn't see himself actually doing it. Even if he planned everything, there is always a variable.

A gruff voice sounded in his mind, "I have a way, but you can't get involved."

Ailon knew who the voice was. It was him. The one who lived in his body and mind. The one he shared a soul with—the one who helped him that night.

He turned his head to look through the window. He knew whatever it was this guy was planning, he was up to no good. But he also knew that whatever it was, he wouldn't allow Ember to be in any real danger. So, he decided to agree.

"Whatever it is you're doing, do it while I'm away. At least if I can't see it and I don't know what it is, I won't worry all the time."

"Tsk, no one's more worried than I am."

On that, Ailon had no way to disagree. The guy had an almost obsessive, possessive nature when it came to Ember or the soul inside her. One hair out of place, and he gets even more unruly than he already is.

Ailon felt himself lose control of his body. That guy had taken over; he was ready to put whatever crazy plan he wanted to do into action. Ailon could only allow himself to fall asleep so he wouldn't be privy to whatever was happening.
