Chapter 6 - The Man with the Golden-Green Eyes

Raine's chest heaved as she froze in place, heart pounding against her ribs like a drum. The forest seemed alive in a way it had never been before. Shadows twisted and stretched across the mossy ground, leaves rustled in whispers that sounded almost like words, and the air held a faint, electric hum. Then she saw him.

‎He was standing there, tall and impossibly still, yet his presence seemed to command the forest itself to pause. His hair was dark, falling in soft waves to brush the nape of his neck, but it was his eyes that held her attention—eyes that were golden, yes, but laced with a subtle, flickering green, as if the forest itself had been captured in their depths. They glimmered and shifted as though alive, reflecting a wisdom and power Raine could not comprehend. She shivered.

‎"Who… who are you?" she whispered, her voice shaking, though she tried to steady it. The forest seemed to lean closer, listening, and for a heartbeat, every other sound—every rustle, every birdcall, every drop of water falling from the leaves—faded into silence.

‎The man tilted his head, just slightly, and for a moment Raine felt exposed, as though he could see through her skin into her very soul. Her golden eyes flickered nervously, remembering the other golden eyes she had seen before—the ones she had thought were special to her—but these were different. They held layers, secrets, and something that stirred something unfamiliar and urgent within her.

‎He did not speak. He did not need to. His gaze was enough to make her pulse quicken, her breaths shallow. The air between them seemed charged, like a storm gathering in the distance. For a moment, Raine felt frozen, torn between curiosity, fear, and a strange, undeniable pull toward him.

‎"I… I should go," she murmured, though the words felt hollow. Every instinct screamed at her to move forward, to speak, to understand. Yet another part of her—the part that had always felt the forest calling her—warned her to retreat. Slowly, reluctantly, she stepped back, feeling the forest floor under her bare feet, cool and damp, guiding her toward safety.

‎The man's eyes followed her, and Raine felt the weight of his presence like a hand pressing against her chest. She couldn't tear her gaze away, couldn't shake the feeling that some invisible thread connected them. And then, just as she reached the edge of the forest, he moved—a step, just enough to show he was not leaving, that he was waiting, watching. Waiting for her.

‎Raine ran, not daring to look back, yet feeling the pull of the forest every step of the way. She stumbled over roots, leapt over fallen branches, and her red hair whipped around her face like living fire. But even as she neared the familiar edge where the trees thinned and the path home began, she could not rid herself of the sensation that the forest had shifted for him. That somehow, it had acknowledged him, and through him, acknowledged her.

‎Her mind raced. Who was he? Why did he seem… connected to everything in the forest, and yet separate? Her body tingled with a strange warmth she couldn't explain, a pull that made her pulse both faster and slower at once. Every instinct screamed that she had encountered something—or someone—important, something beyond her comprehension.

‎When she finally reached the clearing that led to her home, she slowed, bent over, hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath. The world seemed suddenly too quiet. The hum of the forest had receded, but the memory of those golden-green eyes burned behind her eyelids, refusing to leave.

‎Her thoughts tumbled over themselves. Why did I feel… something when I looked into his eyes? What is this pull? Why do I feel… safe and terrified at the same time? Her golden eyes blinked rapidly, and for the first time in her life, she felt the faintest stirrings of something that was hers, but not fully hers—something wild, untamed, and ancient.

‎The Guardian. That was the only word her mind could conjure, though she didn't understand why. Protector. Watcher. Something old, something alive in a way humans were not. She had been drawn to the forest before, yes, but never like this. Never with such clarity, such urgency. And though she tried to tell herself it was just a man, a stranger, a creature of the forest, a small, stubborn part of her heart refused to believe it.

‎As she walked the last steps toward home, the wind rustled the leaves one last time, carrying a whisper that sounded almost like her name. She froze, listening. The sound of the forest faded behind her, but a tiny ember of warmth stayed behind her ribs, echoing the strange pull she had felt.

‎Raine did not yet understand the meaning of the encounter, nor the full depth of what she had seen. She only knew one thing: the forest had claimed her attention, and she had noticed someone there who was unlike anyone she had ever met. Someone who would not easily let go of her, and someone whose existence made her question everything she thought she knew about the world.
