Chapter 3 - FIRST ENCOUNTER

A boy of fifteen years old with blue hair wearing a gloomy look on his face was wandering around the school premises and was passing by the basketball court when he heard someone coughing abruptly. He turned towards that direction and saw a guy- his age- in glasses on his knees and with his head bowed.

The guy seemed to be in so much pain and was clutching his stomach.

There were three other boys surrounding him. One of the boys- a blonde- went down and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt.

"Apologize. Right now." Blondie said to four eyes who trembled in fear.

"I... I'm sorry." Four eyes whispered.

"Huh. What was that. I didn't hear you can you repeat yourself?"

"I... I'm so sorry. Please... Forgive me. It won't happen again." He said again and louder this time.

Blondie grinned and stood up letting go off his shirt. He snapped his fingers as two of the other guys lifted him from the ground by his arms.

Blue head looked at them for a while with an uninterested expression and turned around walking away when he heard...

"We're gonna teach you a lesson to make sure you show respect to your superiors, you powerless brat!"

Blue head stopped when he heard those words.

The blondie punched four eyes in the stomach making him gag. Blondie punched him again and again in the same spot three times. This time, he coughed out blood.

"How does that feel huh? Next time you'll watch how you talk to me." Blondie said and threw a fist at his face but right when it was about to connect, someone swooped in and punched the blondie in his cheek making him lose his balance and fall.

The two other boys looked over at the blondie before looking back at the other guy. It was the blue head

"Why don't you guys pick on someone on your own size huh?" He said and quickly delivered a punch to one of the guys holding four eyes' in the face making the guy let go off four eyes and fall back to the ground.

The third guy let go off four eyes and tried punching blue head in the face but he ducked swiftly dodging the attack and punched the guy in the stomach making him gag. Blue head then spun sideways and kicked the guy to the side of his face.

Four eyes was on the ground looking up at blue head. He looked so cool at the moment.

"So you guys go around picking fight with people who don't bear onyx huh! Pathetic!"

"Haven't your parents ever told you not to go around poking your nose into people's businesses?" Blondie said as he got back on his feet. The other two boys also got back on their feet.

"Besides, you're in no position to talk. You're no different from him am I right... Desmond?" Blondie said pointing to four eyes with a wide grin. Blue head, whose name was now revealed to be Desmond, gritted his teeth.

"Shut up!" Desmond said with rage. Blondie's grin widened.

He snapped his fingers and the two boys attacked Desmond. The first one to get get to him swung his right fist sideways at Desmond who just parried it and elbowed him to the jaw. He gave a back kick to the other guy who was approaching him from behind in the stomach as the guy staggered and held the guy he elbowed by the head. The second guy- the one he kicked- tried approaching him again but he turned and threw the guy he held into the second guy as their heads bumped into each other's.

He then turned around to try and find blondie but he wasn't there.

"He's gone." He said out loud.

"No he's not." Four eyes tried warning him but it was too late as a metal rod struck him in the head. He almost fell but managed to maintain his balance and held the part which the metal hit. He turned around and saw the metal rod floating in the air.

"What the... He uses telekinesis." Desmond said.

"No, that's not it." Four eyes said. "He turns invisible."

Desmond widened his eyes at that as he looked on at the floating rod which dropped to the ground. He could hear footsteps but couldn't tell where exactly it was coming from. A rock suddenly flew from nowhere and hit him in the head again. This time he went on one knee and used his free hand- since one hand was holding the part where the metal rod struck- to hold the other part of his head where the rock struck. He looked around and noticed that the other two boys were also missing.

"Be careful!" Four eyes warned him. "They all have the same ability."

Desmond suddenly felt a punch to the side of his face and dropped to the ground. He groaned in pain as he tried getting up but another floating metal rod struck him in his belly region. He immediately went back down on his knees clutching his belly.

"Dammit!" He thought as something hit him in the back making him drop to the ground.

He tried getting back up but something else hit him again in his stomach as he dropped to his side clutching his belly again. It seemed like those three boys were the ones doing it but he couldn't see them because they were invisible. They finally deactivated their invisibility to reveal themselves surrounding Desmond. They all had some sort of evil grin on their faces.

"How does it feel huh?" Blondie said and went down gazing into Desmond's eyes. "Let me tell you something. Don't go around picking fights with those of us who are chosen by the almighty to go unto the battle field and risk our lives to protect weaklings like you and four eyes. Can't you see? This world has transformed into a battlefield and only those who are blessed like us get to step into the light while those who have been rejected by the almighty have to hind out of fear. Fear of falling prey to the forces of darkness. You know perfectly well that we can choose to protect you or not but you're still trying to fight against us. Open your eyes Desmond. This is reality. You can't always go around daydreaming that we'll still fight for you even you dare defy us do you? Do you?"

"Scum." Desmond murmured.

"Hmm? What was that?" Blondie said still with the grin on his face.

"You're all a bunch of scumbags" Their grin dropped by Desmond's words, just like that as he spoke with his brows furrowed while gritting his teeth. "The only thing you're always thinking about is your yourself. Going around playing hero just because you got lucky and was born bearing an onyx? Don't make me laugh." He spoke with pauses between words and a sense of pain in his voice. "The battlefield isn't a platform where you get to show off to the world how strong you are. You think you're strong just because you've gotten a cool ability? How dumb can you be?"

"What?" Blondie spoke with his brows furrowed whilst gritting his teeth.

"That mentality will get you killed before you even know it." Desmond continued still with pauses between words. "Look at how you were struggling fighting me without powers. Me. Someone who doesn't even bear an onyx. You.." He paused and looked up at blondie. "You're weak."

Blondie got pissed off at that point and punched Desmond in the face making Desmond drop to ground with one hand covering his face in pain. The other two boys kept assaulting him and blondie joined in.

"Shut up!" Blondie hissed as they kept kicking him on the ground. "Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!" He kept saying as they continued their assault.

Four eyes tried getting up but failed miserably and dropped to the ground.

"Stop." He muttered with tears flowing down his face. "Please...stop it." He said a bit louder this time but they completely ignored him and kept their assault upon Desmond. "Please stop." He literally shouted this time.

"Hey what's going on here." They turned their attention towards it direction of the voice. There was a green haired boy running towards them with a bunch of other guys following him.

"Phil." Four eyes said with a smile of relief when he saw the green haired boy, Phil.

"Shit! Let's get out of here." He said and delivered one last kick to Desmond's face before he and the other two boys turned invisible again.

"Tch. They got away." Phil said with a frown when he got Desmond's side. "Take them to the infirmary now." He ordered the other boys who obeyed him.

"Those bastards. Always causing trouble just because they think they're better than others."

A few hours later, Desmond exited the infirmary, still with the gloomy look on his face. Both sleeves of his hood were ripped up to his elbow revealing bandages wrapped around his arms. Plasters dotted both sides of his cheeks. He was a complete mess. He glanced left, spotting Phil who was leaning against the wall. Phil turned, offering a small, tire smile. Desmond however, held Phil's gaze for a long silent moment before looking away.

"Hey Desmond. You okay?"

Desmond didn't say anything. He just nodded and tried walking away but Phil placed a hand on his shoulder and stopped him.

"Come on Desmond, don't let his words get to-"

"I said I'm fine." Desmond cut Phil off with a harsh tone. He then slapped Phil's hand off his shoulder and walked away.

Later that evening, Desmond was walkin along a dark, deserted street with his head bowed. There were bandages wrapped around the part of his arms where his hood didn't cover and one could tell that the bandages were wrapped around the whole of both arms. He still wore that gloomy look on his face.

"And at the end Phil had to come and save me. Again." He said with a sigh.

"I'm weak. I can believe Phil has gone that far ahead of me. We both aspired to be like him. Like Taro. The greatest warrior to have ever lived." He sighed again. "But it looks like I'll never be able to turn that dream into a reality...while Phil...his onyx manifested in him at such an early age." He stopped walking and looked up at the night sky. "I started working out at age 7 hoping to become stronger than Phil once my onyx manifested in me. But the more I out the more Phil kept going up ahead of me. I was so caught up that I didn't notice it until I found out last year that I didn't possess an onyx." Tears began swelling up in his eyes. "That was when I noticed that I'll never catch up to Phil. Not in a million years because I..." The tears started flowing down his face. "I'm so weak even with all the physical strength I've got."

He went down on his knees and screamed. He was crying uncontrollably. Well, he chose to take this road so that he could do this. He knew the street would be deserted by now and even with the apartments around, everyone would mind their own business. Or so he thought. But then...

"HEEEEELLP. SOMEBODY PLEASE. HELP ME." Desmond became alerted at that moment. He quickly stood and ran towards the alley where he heard the cry and widened his eyes at what he saw. There was a dar-tandemon standing in front of a little girl who was backed to a wall. Her teary eyes were wide opened as well as her mouth and she was visibly shaking as the tears flowed down her face.

"Shit." He thought as he he froze in his tracks. He couldn't move. His shaking legs wouldn't respond to him. His eyes were wide opened and he was gritting his teeth as bullets of sweat started rolling down his face.

"There's no warrior here. What should I do?" I can't just jump in. I don't bear an onyx. I'll die if I try, it's crazy." The dar-tandemon started lifting up its deadly katana.

"No. I have to do something. I can't just stand aside and watch this happen, I won't allow it" He said but his body was still refusing to move.

"Come on move dammit." The dar-tandemon's katana was fully up and ready to strike.

"I won't stand aside for something like that to happen." As he said that his veins started popping up on his skin.

"I won't let my workouts go in vain. I'm gonna display them, right here, right now."

He suddenly found himself flying towards the dar-tandemon with his right fist ready to strike.

"Even if I don't bear an onyx...I won't stand aside and watch this happen right before my eyes.

He got to the dar-tandemon within a flash and with all the strength he could muster, he swung his fist at the dar-tandemon.
