Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Test Drive

It seems that no one else in the house noticed. My identity so far is safe. I don't want anyone to find out, especially my parents. I'll head to school as normal today and see what happens. I go to all my classes, same as my average routine, but something seems different. I seem to be… actually understanding what my teachers are saying? And it seems to be really easy to learn as well. By the end of the day, I have a full understanding of every concept taught in all of my classes. I completely breezed through everything today! I'm assuming this is from Jack of all Trades. If I can now handle this without even properly turning my brain on… I must push myself to the limits to get the most out of this.

I reach home, change into some clothes quickly, and bolt upstairs. As expected, a voice calls me down. "Xyle!" A deep voice shouts. I heave a deep sigh, stare at the ceiling, and slowly walk back down.

"Once again, you've shown me that you don't care! How can you just dash away as soon as you get home!" I look down at the ground. "I'm sorry," I mutter. My dad continues yelling, as I keep repeating, "I'm sorry". There's nothing I can do here.

My shoulders feel heavy again, my energy suddenly drained from listening. But as I hold my head low, I see a white spark dance between my fingers. It's as if I've regained my will to live. I just need to hold on. After 15 minutes of nonstop scolding, my dad says, "Get out of my face," and flicks his wrist at me. I bolt back upstairs, run to my room, and slowly close the door.

I sit down on my bed and look at my hands. I focus, concentrating on creating another spark, and a small white zap shoots out, stopping a few centimeters from where it left my fingers. It seems that if I focus enough, I can create a small amount of electricity. According to the description, "Manipulate and harness the electric element," there are quite a few things I can do with this. I press my palm against an outlet in my room, and I concentrate, before slowly pulling my hand away, revealing streaks of electricity, dancing between my palm and the outlet.

Then another thing pops into my mind. This is a complete guess, but from what I saw a little bit ago, my power responds to emotional stimuli. I open my window and look out at the cloudy and grey sky. I close my eyes and concentrate, taking deep breaths. I imagine collecting all the negative emotions, gathering all the pain, sorrow, loneliness, and any other negative emotion of me, and the 100 before. I imagine gathering it all in the center of my chest, then moving it to my palm. I can feel it, the electric charge. I point my now glowing hand at the sky, letting any other emotions pile, before I visualize releasing it. The energy shoots out, not in a straight concentrated beam, but dozens of streaks of white, scattered in one general area. None of them made it relatively far, maybe a few yards before vanishing. This much already took a lot out of me, and I was already sweating buckets. I take my shirt off, revealing my plain-looking upper body. After heaving another deep sigh, I turn on my fan to cool off.

While I'm resting, I'll take a look at whose memories are inside my head. I close my eyes and sit in a meditating position. I begin getting flashes of memories, some seem to be in the distant future, some in the past, others near the same time period, but there is one thing that all of them have in common: each of the memories has a glimpse of someone dear to them dying due to events caused by the extraterrestrials. Events are situations forced upon humanity; an example would be a threat being released in a nation, or pitting two nations against each other. This is unavoidable, as not complying with the demands results in anyone involved being executed.

Anyways, getting back on track, I've gone through about 51 memories out of the 100. The most important ones I can find are: an inventor from the future, an army general from the past, an mma champion near modern times, and a scientist from the future. I can't access all of the memories, but can take glimpses of them and use their own experiences as if they were my own. It kinda seems like a character system, where you get more of a character as you progress, or something like that.

I have another idea. I should probably go test the other passive, Enhanced Senses. After an hour, I put my shirt back on, a pair of socks, and running shoes before I head outside. I hop around a few times, testing how my body feels now. It definitely feels lighter, but there doesn't seem to be a physical change. I get into a running stance. I take off, running as fast as I can, feeling the wind blowing through my hair. After a few seconds, I begin slowing down. Looking back, I realize I covered the distance of roughly a 100 yard dash in about 4 and a half seconds. Wait 4 seconds? That's not right. I face back toward the direction of my house, getting into a running stance again. I take off, slowing to a stop in front of my house. Now it's a little less than 4 and a half seconds. Am I getting faster? I mean, it did say it would get better through training and experience, but this much is a bit much. If it works like a leveling system, then it should slow down later.

I should also test my vertical jump. I start with my normal jump height. I do a small squat and put everything I have into my legs. I launch into the air, the sudden height catching me off guard. I almost lose balance in the air, using my arms to balance myself before landing with a thud. I was not expecting such a high jump. I think it was about 55-60 inches? Somewhere around there, that's for sure.
