Chapter 17 - Conversation with Dumbledore

Before the stone beast at the entrance to the principal's office, Professor McGonagall gave the password for the day. The stone beast leaped away at the sound of her voice, and the stone wall behind it split in two, revealing a spiral staircase leading to the principal's office.

The staircase rotated automatically, taking the group to the entrance of the principal's office.

"Come in." As if he knew they were coming, Dumbledore's aged voice came from inside before anyone could knock.

Professor McGonagall pushed open the door and entered, followed by Maca and Snape.

"How is it going?" Dumbledore smiled at Maca, then looked at Professor McGonagall.

"The students have all gone back, and the troll has been dealt with—by Mr. McLean." Professor McGonagall glanced at Maca and then told Dumbledore the details.

Dumbledore listened and nodded, and only began to speak after Professor McGonagall had finished.

"Oh yes, I understand," Dumbledore said. "Minerva, go and continue the search to see if any other students are still running around outside."

"Severus, go and help Professor Quirrell get rid of the troll."

"I don't think it's necessary. Quirrell can handle it on his own," Snape said, still expressionless.

"I think we should," Dumbledore said, looking at Snape.

"…If you insist." Snape stared at Dumbledore for a moment before turning and leaving briskly.

Maca realized that he and Dumbledore were the only two people left, which made him a little uneasy, but he didn't show it.

"Would you like some kiwi pudding?" Dumbledore asked with a smile.

"Uh, why not?" Maca composed herself, trying to stop thinking about those irrelevant things.

It must be said that the headmaster's taste was quite good this time. A moment later, a pudding was inside Maca's stomach. During this time, Dumbledore simply watched him with a smile, without saying a word.

"Hmm, it tastes good." After waiting a while, Maca said somewhat awkwardly.

"I think so too," Dumbledore finally spoke. "So, how's life at Hogwarts going?"

"It was very interesting and fulfilling, and I made a lot of friends." Maca tried to choose some optimistic and positive answers to fill in, although she didn't know if they would work.

"To be honest, you are the smartest child I have ever seen, without a doubt." Dumbledore shook his head, seemingly unconcerned by Maca's answer. "No one has ever learned so much at the age of eleven. Not a single one during my time teaching. And in the history of Hogwarts, there is no precedent for it."

"Uh, thank you for the compliment, but... isn't that a bit of an exaggeration? For example, my shapeshifting ability is pretty average." Maca tried hard to recall her situation.

"I don't think so," Dumbledore said. "I've been watching you since you first caused a magical outburst, and I think we can communicate about your behavior and experiences as relatively equal adults."

This time, Maca couldn't hold back any longer. He exclaimed in surprise, "Magic outburst? Actually, I've been wanting to ask this ever since I received my admission notice. I don't remember ever having a magic outburst."

"Oh, yes, because your magical outburst happened at a very inopportune time," Dumbledore sighed. "Although I don't know if I should say this—"

Upon hearing this, Maka was taken aback, then suddenly stood up: "Was it my mother... at that time?"

"Yes, your magic suddenly went berserk and protected you during the car accident." Dumbledore looked at Maca kindly, a hint of pity in his eyes.

"In other words, even if she hadn't pounced on me…" Maca murmured in a trembling voice, collapsing back into the chair as if all her strength had been drained.

Dumbledore looked at Maca in silence, seemingly regretting it, or perhaps observing his reaction.

Suddenly, Maca came to her senses and sighed heavily.

"The dead are gone…that is why I yearn even more to gain the power to protect others." Maca suddenly raised her head, looking directly at Dumbledore for the first time, and said firmly.

"This is your true self, I can sense it." Dumbledore nodded with satisfaction, his gentle and wise smile returning. "Death is usually the end of life, but it is also always the beginning for others. Remember, death is not so terrible."

Maca knew that Dumbledore saw the shadow of Voldemort in her, but fortunately she did not have any evil intentions and passed the test.

Dumbledore and Snape are essentially the same kind of people; they are never lacking in power and ambition, but they would give up everything, including their own lives, for "love." The difference lies in that Dumbledore's love is universal, while Snape's love is reserved solely for Lily.

But what will happen to Maka?

That night, Maca lay in bed, his mind racing. He had experienced many things that day, and had learned a startling truth from Dumbledore, which kept him pondering until he finally fell into a deep sleep late into the night.

...

After November arrived, the weather turned extremely cold. The mountains surrounding the school were shrouded in a gray haze, covered with ice and snow, and the lake surface was as cold and hard as quenched steel. Every morning, the ground was frosty, and the students had to watch their step at all times to avoid tripping and falling.

Maca sat at the table, eating his breakfast, surrounded by a crowd of people.

No one knows who spread the word—probably Ron—but almost all the students have heard about Maca's glorious feat: he single-handedly took down a twelve-foot-tall giant! It's simply unbelievable!

Now, Maca has become a celebrity. Many students come up to talk to him, and even a few first-grade girls have asked him for autographs!

Maca felt he really enjoyed being surrounded by people, not just because of vanity, but also because he felt it was really warm!

This is not an excuse, believe me! I'm telling the truth! If you don't believe me, try having a bunch of people surround you and see what happens.

Recently, Hagrid was seen frosting his flying broomsticks on the Quidditch pitch, completely wrapped in a long mole fur coat, wearing rabbit fur gloves, and huge beaver fur boots.

This clearly expresses one thing – the Quidditch season has begun!

To be honest, Maca really wanted to join the Hufflepuff Quidditch team, but unfortunately, he was always too busy. Besides, Quidditch teams usually don't allow first-year students to participate.

"I believe Harry's case is just an exception." Maca looked towards the Gryffindor table, where Harry and Ron were whispering to each other. Maca guessed they were talking about this.

However, what concerned Maca was that he hadn't heard anything about Harry joining Gryffindor as the Seeker. Could it be that Gryffindor's captain, Wood, was planning to use Harry as a secret weapon or something?

"The secrecy measures are quite good," Maca mumbled in a muffled voice as she chewed and swallowed the food in her mouth.

However, when match day arrived and Maca saw Harry walking towards the stands just like him from afar, he was a little dumbfounded.

"What's going on?" Maca stared blankly as Harry disappeared down the stairs leading to the Gryffindor stands, his face filled with undisguised astonishment.

"What's wrong? What are you looking at, Mr. Knight?" Senior Charlotte put her arm around Maca's shoulder and said with a grin, "Are you looking at your Princess Granger?"

"Uh, ah—no." Maca shook his head, glanced at the Gryffindor stands again, then turned back and went up the stairs on their side with Charlotte.

Quidditch matches are exciting, but Maca isn't really interested in watching them.

He glanced every now and then at the teachers' stands—without Harry's Quidditch match, he wondered how Quirrell's actions would change.

Until the match was decided, nothing unexpected happened. With Harry absent, it seemed that Quirrell's possibility of taking action was eliminated at the source, but Maca couldn't guarantee that he wouldn't look for other opportunities to target Harry.

"At least, it's a good thing that we've avoided an inevitable crisis, right?" Maca wasn't sure if that was the case, but he didn't have any clue about it for the time being.

The match between Gryffindor and Slytherin had ended. Maca glanced at the scoreboard as he left: 60 to 210. With the score tied, Slytherin's Seeker caught the Golden Snitch, ending the close contest.

Maca didn't have time to care about that; after glancing at it, he walked towards the Gryffindor crowd.

"Hey, Harry!" Maca tried to sound normal. "Don't worry, the game isn't over yet, it's just beginning."

"Oh, yes. But losing to Slytherin is still not a pleasant surprise," Harry sighed.

It seems that even though he didn't join the Quidditch team, he still really enjoys the sport.

"Hmm," Maca organized the guesses she had been pondering during the competition, and then asked, "I heard that Neville almost crashed during your first flying lesson, is that true?"

Harry nodded and said, "Yes! If Mrs. Hooch hadn't reacted quickly, Neville would definitely have ended up in the school hospital, I'm sure of it."

"Yeah! He shot up so high!" Ron said, gesturing with a laugh.

"And then what happened? Malfoy didn't make things difficult for him, did he?"

"Oh, yeah, that's right. That bastard is always making fun of others. I wish I could cast a monster curse on him!"

"The duel that night was because we had a fight in class," Harry added angrily.

"Yeah, that guy is definitely no good."

While casually agreeing, Maca gradually sorted out the cause and effect of the matter—so that's how it was!
