Evangeline didn't dare move closer to the door, nor peek through its gaps. She didn't need to. The voices beyond it were unmistakably comes from her own parents. The only two who had seen her first breath in this world, the very same who had raised her throughout her almost two decades of life.

Yet the tone in which they spoke of her was colder than one would use for a stranger.

"You know this wouldn't have happened if it weren't for your family!" her mother hissed, her voice trembling between anger and grief. "If I had known, I would never have given birth to her. I would have given birth to the right daughter, my Serena, and named her as she was meant to be."

"It's just a name, Helen!" her father snapped, his temper always a thin thread. "Why must you behave like a child over something so foolish?"
