With an easy smile, Gallagher tugged at the cuff of his sleeve and rolled it back, revealing a long gash that stretched along his forearm. The scar was pale at the edges and darker at its center, the clear mark of a burn.

"I was in an accident," he said lightly, as though it were nothing more than a trivial mishap but for the wound to happen so deeply, it couldn't be just as simple wound as he remarked it to be. "Didn't quite die though."

Evangeline's eyes widened slightly.

"I saved a baby from a burning house," he continued, almost casually. "And to make a very long story short… that incident led me to my real family."

"Real family?" she repeated, her gaze still fixed on the scar.
