Chapter 21 - SHE'S THE THIEF

The melody from the piano filled the air as every living soul in the hall had turned dead silent, listening to us battle sing. I wanted to know how this girl steals my songs, and tonight, I was going to.

"If the night feels colder than the day,

And the silence takes your breath away,

Know I'm standing where the shadows fall,

Loving you beyond it all...

"Can you stop already? Can you stop stealing my song?" Rae yelled through the mic cutting me half way.

"What are you talking about?" I asked.

"Right here, in front of everyone, you're stealing my song again!" she kept throwing the same accusation at me.

"Well, Rae's right this time, Maeve. She hit the note a split second faster than you." The male judge who looked like he couldn't wait to get rid of me said out loud and the crowd supported immediately.

Murmurs began as everyone agreed to his words.

"Hit the note split second than me, is that even possible?" I laughed.

"How are you doing it Maeve? How are you stealing my songs?" Rae asked. She was accusing me of something she was guilty of.

"Why would I steal a song I've never heard of in my life. We stood before all of these people here, so when did I steal your song?" I asked her.

"Can you stop this nonsense Maeve, this is not a circus show. If you wanted to be a joke, you could have picked any act in the circus show." The female judge said.

"We gave you a chance and you blew it. It is time for our judgement."

"But miss Maeve cannot cheat." Becky pushed to the front, confronting the judges. You can't accuse her without proof!"

"Proof?" the judge snapped. "She was asked to prove her innocence, and she blew it. Sit down before you're escorted out!"

"I'll do it again," I said quickly, lifting the mic. I couldn't get Becky in trouble, she'll never understand what was happening. "Give me one more chance."

The lead judge hesitated. "This is your last chance. Don't waste it."

I nodded, though my hands were shaking. I didn't know how Rae was doing it, how she kept stealing my voice, my melody, but I would find out.

The piano began again, soft, cautious. Rae and I stood shoulder to shoulder.

I lifted the mic and thought of something random.

Chocolate milk. Vanilla flavor.

Rae's voice rang out before I could sing.

"Chocolate milk, vanilla flavor..."

She stopped abruptly, eyes wide, hand clapping over her mouth.

My blood ran cold.

The audience murmured in confusion.

"What is she saying?"

"What's happening?" Rae's body shook gently, fear evident on her face.

My thoughts spun in chaos. Could she hear me? Was she reading my mind?

No. That wasn't possible.

And yet...

Somehow, she sings my thoughts before I even get the chance to air them out.

How the hell was that even possible?

"Are you alright Rae, you were just about to sing." One of the judges asked worriedly and her hands tightened around her mic.

Since I now knew what this bitch was up to. Even though it seemed impossible and made me go crazy, I was ready to use it to my advantage.

"You're not singing Maeve, is this how you want to prove yourself to everyone?" The male Judge asked and I brought the mic to my lips, at the same time Rae did the same.

I smirked. So this was how this girl stole all of my songs in the past. For some reason, she could read my thoughts.

I still had no idea how that was possible.

"Hush now, the stars are glowing, (Maeve's thought)

Hush now the stars are glowing... (Rae singing)

Snowflakes drift and softly fall. (Maeve's thought)

Snowflakes drift and softly fall... (Rae singing)

Dreams are sailing... Stupid bitch!" (Maeve's thought)

Dreams are sailing... Stupid bit...! Rae held her lips again, finally spinning her head to look at me with tears in her eyes.

Murmurs began again and I just smiled. To the audience, she has been the only one singing and she had made a mistake again. Saying the B word on a show kids were watching was really not good for her image.

I laughed.

"Why do you keep stealing from me Maeve?" She yelled again and I just smiled.

"I didn't even sing Rae, what's wrong?"

"Candles in the snow is a popular lullaby, how could I possibly steal it from you?" Her lips twitched immediately.

"I... I..." Rae tried speaking, her eyes moving around the crowd as murmurs filled the space again. People were begining to doubt her words.

"This competition ends here." Martin suddenly said coming to stand by her side as he faced me.

"Rae has a vocal cord disease called singer's nodules. She's not allowed to sing for long because she'd strain her voice. And by trying to prove that you stole her song she had strained her voice, that is why she can no longer speak or sing."

"You better hope Rae will be fine after this. Or Raeknights will never forgive you."

"Maeve did it on purpose, she knows Rae's voice is not good yet she purposely competed with her." Someone in the crowd yelled.

"How can you be that heartless?"

"She's jealous because there's a new girls who not only is more beautiful, but sings better than her." Another person said and then the hall erupted in curses again.

They hadn't even seen the real face of Rae to know if she was more beautiful than I was. And my voice was a thousand times better than hers, so what the hell where they talking about.

I was booed by everyone.

"Maeve, for cheating in the competition and causing another contestant harm, you're hereby disqualified from the competition." The male judge said.

"Not only will you no longer be competing in this competition, but you're band from Velmora's singing competition for life." He added.
