Chapter 44 - Chapter 42: Divine Speed Talismans and a Night Run to the Magical World

We continue. When Vernon and his wife saw Harry draw a saber from thin air, their faces turned white. All the words they had prepared stuck in their throats.

Harry took the letter from Vernon and scanned it. It was from the Ministry of Magic. It chattered on about his use of magic tonight and ended with a "this is your final warning," and nothing more.

He tossed the letter aside and sneered. "A piece of paper can only expel me from school, but it cannot stop me from ridding the world of you pests!"

Vernon, having seen Harry conjure a blade from nowhere, was already scared witless. Seeing him pay no mind to the official warning, he didn't dare breathe a word.

He was terrified that Harry, in a fit of rage, would send the three of them to be reunited in the afterlife.

Seeing them silent, Harry finally sheathed his saber and went upstairs.

After a few steps, he spotted the telephone on the cabinet. An idea flashed in his mind, like thunder in the night, brightening his vision.

He clapped his hands and laughed. "Yee! This one was only thinking of owl post, but I forgot about the 'spinning-wheel iron box'!"

He remembered that Hermione came from a Muggle family and lived in the bustling city of London. When they parted at the station, she had given him her phone number.

Harry recalled the number, picked up the receiver, and spun the rotary dial.

After a few moments, a man's voice came through the receiver, thick with yawns and a hint of anger. "Hello, Granger residence. What is so urgent that you must call at one in the morning?"

"Is that Sister Hermione's honored father on the line? This one is her classmate and sworn friend. I have an urgent matter to discuss with her. I hope the old sir will grant me this convenience."

Mr. Granger, hearing Harry's words, was instantly wide awake, though utterly baffled.

Is this how people talk in the modern age?

And what is he doing calling Hermione at one in the morning?

Mr. Granger did not hesitate. "I'm sorry, young man, Hermione is asleep. And don't you people usually prefer to use owls?"

Harry said urgently, "Aiya! Old sir, why are you so unreasonable? If this one could use an owl, why would I be calling you?"

"Just tell Big Sister that it is Harry Potter calling."

Mr. Granger was about to hang up, but hearing the name "Harry Potter," he froze.

He knew that even before Hermione went to Hogwarts, she often mentioned this name. Even though he and his wife were Muggles, they knew this person was the savior of the wizarding world.

Now that she had returned from Hogwarts, she mentioned him daily, thought of him nightly, and spoke of him constantly, never forgetting him for a moment.

Mr. Granger paused. "Very well, Mr. Potter. Please wait a moment. I will go get Hermione."

After a quarter of an hour, Harry heard the sound of hurried footsteps through the receiver. Before he could make them out, a clear voice called.

"Harry! Is that you?"

"Good evening, Big Sister. It is I. My apologies for the disturbance."

Hermione ignored this and unloaded her worries. "Why didn't you write to me? I thought the Owl Post Office had lost my letter and I got into a fight with them..."

Before she could finish, Harry interrupted and told her about Dobby.

Learning that her letters had been stolen by a house-elf, Hermione cried out, "How is that possible?"

"Harry, you must understand, in A Guide to Non-Wizard Beings, house-elves are described as... slaves to wizards."

Harry was shocked. "That scoundrel uses such powerful magic, yet he is just a lowly government-owned slave?"

"That's right. They are born slaves, and they are slaves forever." Hermione pressed her lips together. "They would never betray their masters, because they don't even know what freedom is."

"Some house-elves even consider freedom a disgrace..."

Suddenly, the line went dead. Harry hung up and tried the number again, but there was no sound.

Seeing this, how could he not know that it was Dobby interfering?

Harry ground his teeth and clenched his fists, wishing he could drag the short creature out and chop him to pieces.

That night, Harry rested in the living room, keeping one eye open, but Dobby never showed himself.

The scarred lad slept poorly. With dark circles under his eyes, he looked seven parts menacing.

The Dursleys, seeing this, dared not speak and kept their distance, afraid to set him off.

Just then, the doorbell rang. Petunia, eager to escape the ominous presence, hurried to open it, only to find three new faces.

"Excuse me, who are you—"

"Harry!"

Hermione saw the figure with the saber at his waist, cried out in joy, and ran to him.

Harry turned, surprised. "Big Sister, why have you come?"

"Excuse me!" Vernon's face twitched. "This is breaking and entering!"

Mr. Granger hurried forward and handed him a business card. Vernon, seeing he was not a wizard, relaxed slightly.

Hermione ignored them, sat with Harry, and said urgently, "Harry, are you being watched by that house-elf?"

"How did Big Sister know?"

"Last night, I suddenly couldn't hear you. I guessed it might be that Dobby. But most importantly... I am being watched by him, too."

It turned out that after the call cut off, Hermione, finding it suspicious, had tried to call other Muggle-born wizards to warn them.

"But whenever I mentioned your name, the line would instantly go dead."

The two discussed their options. It was not yet the start of term, so Platform Nine and Three-Quarters was inaccessible, and Diagon Alley was not open to underage wizards. Their means of contacting the magical world were completely cut off.

Harry pondered. "As this one sees it, if we want to reach the magical world, our only option is to go to Brother Ron's estate."

Hermione fretted, "But how do we get to Ron's? His home is in Ottery St. Catchpole, which is hundreds of kilometers from London."

"Oh, Hermione," said Mrs. Granger with a smile, "if you want to see your friend, your father and I can drive you."

"No, Mum. You and Dad won't be able to find the place."

Wizarding dwellings were protected by numerous Muggle-repelling charms. It would be a futile effort.

Furthermore, this Dobby was a treacherous and unknown entity. If her parents were harmed, she would regret it forever.

While she worried, Harry smiled. "Big Sister, do not panic. This is not difficult."

"This one knows a certain brother, and I learned a few skills from his hand."

"We just need to bind a 'Jia Ma' talisman, and we can travel eight hundred li in a night, as easily as breathing."

And so it was, Hermione was flustered, her hands and feet useless before the long road; Harry was calm, a trick from Mount Liang hidden in his heart. With his great skill, a journey of a hundred miles was no cause for alarm. But who was this brother Harry spoke of? You must listen to the next chapter.
