Chapter 71 - Chapter 70: The White Lord Invites Him to the Pensieve

When Harry saw Dumbledore confirm his suspicion, his eyes narrowed.

In his first year, Dumbledore had been as slippery as an eel. Now, Harry had told him about Dobby just last night, and he already had an answer? This was... strange.

Dumbledore, seeing his distrust, sighed.

"Three months ago, the Ministry raided Malfoy Manor for dark items. I happen to have friends on the investigation committee."

"Harry, I want to know who opened the Chamber just as much as you do. Can we please forget last year's unpleasantness?"

Hearing his sincere tone, Harry finally believed him. A fierce, murderous aura began to leak from his pores, making Fawkes tremble.

Harry and Draco had old grudges. And that scoundrel had recently insulted his sworn-sister Ginny. Now, with a chance to wipe out his whole family... how could Harry let it pass?

He cupped his hands. "Good Professor! On what day do we dispatch the troops to conquer the Malfoy family? Harry is willing to be the vanguard! I await your command!"

Dumbledore stared. "No, Harry. I never said we were going to 'conquer' Malfoy Manor..."

"Aiya! Yes, yes! That Malfoy whelp, Draco, is still in the school. He makes for a fine hostage—"

"Harry!" Dumbledore barked, opening his drawer and downing another potion.

"Harry, I cannot do that."

Seeing him refuse, Harry frowned. "Dobby's warning, Draco's behavior... this one has told the Professor everything. Why do you still not believe?"

"I do trust you, Harry," Dumbledore sighed. "But we have no proof."

Dobby's warnings were uncorroborated. Draco's behavior was suspicious, but not evidence.

"And, Harry," Dumbledore added, "only the investigation committee can issue a search warrant. That is Ministry law."

Hearing this cautious talk, Harry felt he was looking at Lin Chong, the 800,000-man army instructor—a man with dragon-slaying skills who kept his own hands tied. It was disgusting.

Harry slammed his fist on the desk. "Regulations, regulations, what bird-regulations! The Professor has the power to change heaven and earth! What does the Ministry count for!"

"That Chamber is open! Blood could be spilled at any moment! If those Ministry scoundrels dare to block you, why not just kill them, seize their seats, and enact justice for heaven!"

This rebellious speech blew through the office. The portraits on the wall dropped their quills, their mouths agape.

Dumbledore was also stunned. Overthrow the Ministry? Is that what a second-year thinks about?

He opened his drawer, took two more vials, and drank them.

"Harry, your ideas are too radical."

"Hah! If the Ministry is corrupt and allows evil, then every person under heaven has the right to execute them!"

The portraits cheered. "Well said, Mr. Potter!"

"I've never had a student with such charisma, Harry!"

Dumbledore waved his wand, turning them all to face the wall.

"Harry," the White Lord said, "you are a bit too extreme."

"But... I used to be even more extreme than you."

He walked to a black cabinet and opened it, revealing a stone basin.

Harry looked inside. It was filled with a silvery substance, neither liquid nor gas, that swirled as if alive.

DumbledDore explained, "This is a Pensieve. You can use it to review memories."

He pulled a silver strand of memory from his temple and dropped it in.

"Harry, would you like to see my past?"

Harry, eager to see this magic, nodded.

"Very simple," Dumbledore said. "Just put your head in. Remember, you are only a visitor. No one can see you."

Harry dipped his head in. A cold shock.

He opened his eyes. He was in a field, by a wooden house. A young girl skipped past him, through his body.

"Albus! Aberforth! I picked mushrooms outside the village!"

"Ariana! I told you, stay away from those Muggles!"

"It's fine! I have magic! They can't catch me!"

The scene swirled. Ariana was now curled in bed, shaking, her eyes vacant.

"What did they do to Ariana!"

"I'll kill those three Muggle brats!"

"Albus, Aberforth, look after your sister. Leave the rest to me..."

The scenes changed like a lantern-show.

"Mother, are we really moving to Godric's Hollow?"

"Do you want Ariana locked up in St. Mungo's for the rest of her life!"

"Your father is in Azkaban..."

"If Ariana becomes an Obscurial..."

The vision solidified. A handsome young man smiled. "You're Albus? Oh, I'm Gellert."

"Gellert Grindelwald."
