Chapter 2 - 2. Into the shroud

The Blackthorn Wilds stretched endless and unforgiving, a labyrinth of twisted pines and fog-choked ravines that seemed to breathe with malice. Xavier Draven led the way, his boots crunching on frost-crusted leaves, the Bloodpearl in his chest pulsing like a caged beast. Its crimson glow seeped through his torn shirt, casting eerie shadows that danced with the moonlight. Blood, blood, blood, it whispered, a relentless chant that stoked the enigma within, threatening to unleash the monster he barely controlled. Roshan, the demonic dagger, hung at his hip, its obsidian blade silent but heavy, its runes faintly glowing as if sensing the dangers ahead. The prophecy gnawed at him: The enigma bears the pearl, but only blood will lift the shroud. Seek the stone, or fall. The Hollowed Glade, where the Bloodstone lay hidden, was their destination—a cursed place where enigmas were born, and where Xavier's fate, and that of his mate Lyra, would be forged.

Lyra walked at his side, her green eyes scanning the shadows, her leather armor creaking softly. Her black hair was tied back, but a few strands framed her face, catching the moonlight. As his mate, her presence was a lifeline, her fierce devotion anchoring him against the Bloodpearl's chaos. Behind them, Lucian, the alpha of the Eclipse Pack, moved with predatory grace, his scarred frame towering, his amber eyes glowing faintly in the dark. His arm brushed against Zamiel, his omega mate, whose lean figure was cloaked in a tattered mantle. Zamiel's violet eyes darted nervously, but his hands were steady, one clutching a rune-etched gadget that hummed softly, the other ready to summon his supernatural healing. Lucian's protective stance was unwavering, his love for Zamiel a quiet strength that rivaled Xavier's bond with Lyra.

The air grew heavier as they ventured deeper, the scent of pine and earth mingling with something fouler—sulfur, oil, and the acrid tang of demonic energy. Xavier's enigma senses sharpened, detecting a faint hum, like the pulse of a distant machine. "They're close," he growled, his hand tightening on Roshan's hilt. "Voss's androids."

Lyra's hand brushed his, a spark of warmth in the cold. "We're ready," she said, her voice low but fierce, her green eyes locking onto his with a promise. "You're not alone, my mate."

Lucian's growl rumbled, his arm shielding Zamiel. "The Covenant's machines are relentless, but Zamiel's got something for them." He glanced at his mate, a rare softness in his amber eyes. "Show them, love."

Zamiel held up his gadget, a palm-sized disc etched with glowing runes, its surface pulsing with faint blue light. "This disruptor scrambles their demonic cores," he said, his soft voice steady with purpose. "It won't kill them, but it'll slow them down. I'm working on something stronger." His fingers twitched, as if itching to tinker, his expertise a quiet defiance of his omega vulnerability.

Xavier nodded, a flicker of respect cutting through his rage. Zamiel's healing had saved him last night, and his gadgets promised an edge against Lord Eron Voss, the demon king whose machines hunted him. But the Bloodpearl's whispers grew louder, a vision flashing in his mind: a shadowed figure, cloaked in flame, offering a chalice of blood to a kneeling king. Tai Bailing, the supreme alpha, betrayed his kind for immortality, the vision hinted, a pact with Voss that doomed enigmas like Xavier. He shook it off, focusing on the path ahead, but the Bloodpearl's glow flared, searing his chest.

"Xavier?" Lyra's voice cut through, her hand squeezing his. "You're burning up."

"It's the pearl," he rasped, his voice raw. "It's restless. The Glade's close—I can feel it." He met her gaze, the fire in her eyes steadying him. As his mate, Lyra was more than a beta wolf; she was his queen, destined to rule by his side when he tore down Tai Bailing's throne.

Lucian's eyes narrowed, scanning the fog. "We're not alone," he said, his voice a low growl. "Zamiel, stay close."

Before Zamiel could respond, the ground trembled, a mechanical screech splitting the air. Five androids burst from the fog, their black frames glinting, their silver blades glowing with demonic runes. Their optics burned red, pulsing with Voss's infernal power, their movements eerily synchronized. These were larger than the last, their cores radiating a sickly green light, a sign of their demonic enhancement.

"Enigma detected," the lead android hissed, its voice a blend of machine and demon. "Eliminate."

Xavier roared, the Bloodpearl igniting as he unleashed the enigma. His bones cracked, fur erupting, his form swelling into an eight-foot beast of raw power. Roshan flared in his grip, its blade lengthening, runes blazing as shadows coiled around it. He lunged, slashing the first android's chest, the demonic sword cutting through its core in a burst of green ichor and sparks. The machine screamed, a sound both mechanical and infernal, collapsing as its core flickered out.

Lyra shifted, her black-furred wolf form a blur as she tore into the second android, her claws rending its arm. She danced back, dodging a silver blade, her green eyes flashing with defiance. Lucian roared, his massive wolf form slamming into the third android, his strength toppling it. Zamiel stayed back, his gadget humming as he activated it, a pulse of blue light rippling out. The remaining androids stuttered, their movements jerky, their demonic cores flickering under the disruptor's effect.

"Keep it up, Zamiel!" Lucian barked, pinning the android as its blade grazed his shoulder, drawing blood. Zamiel darted forward, his hands glowing with silvery light. He touched Lucian's wound, the supernatural healing knitting the flesh in seconds, the blood vanishing as if it had never been. Lucian growled in approval, his amber eyes meeting Zamiel's with a fierce, loving pride.

Xavier's vision blurred, the Bloodpearl's whispers growing deafening. Blood, blood, blood. Another vision hit: Tai Bailing, kneeling before a flaming throne, Voss's demonic form looming, a chalice of blood sealing their pact. The betrayal burned in Xavier's chest, fueling his rage. He swung Roshan, shadows trailing the blade, and cleaved the fourth android in half, its core exploding in a shower of green flame. The fifth android lunged, its silver blade grazing his side, the demonic venom burning like fire.

Zamiel was there in an instant, his glowing hands pressing against Xavier's wound. The pain faded, the venom purged, his flesh healing under Zamiel's supernatural touch. "You're too stubborn to fall," Zamiel said, a faint smile breaking his usual reserve. "Stay with us, Xavier."

Lyra shifted back to human form, her dagger flashing as she guarded Zamiel. "He's not going anywhere," she said, her voice fierce, her eyes locked on Xavier's. "Not without me."

The androids were down, their cores shattered, but the forest wasn't done with them. The ground shuddered, and a low, guttural moan echoed from the trees—a sound not of machines, but of something ancient, hungry. The fog thickened, tendrils curling like fingers, and the air grew colder, the Bloodpearl pulsing erratically. Xavier's enigma senses screamed, detecting a presence older than Voss's machines, tied to the Hollowed Glade's curse.

"Something's waking," Xavier growled, shifting back to human form, his chest heaving, the Bloodpearl's glow searing. Roshan shrank to a dagger, its runes pulsing in warning. "The Glade's close, but it's not welcoming us."

Lyra's hand found his, her touch grounding him. "We face it together," she said, her voice a vow. "You're my mate, Xavier. Whatever's out there, we'll tear it apart."

Lucian shifted back, his arm around Zamiel, who clutched another gadget—a small sphere etched with runes, its light flickering. "The pack sent a message," Lucian said, his voice tense. "Tai Bailing's ordering all alphas to his citadel. He's promising protection, but it smells like a trap. The Eclipse Pack's restless—some want to obey, others smell his betrayal."

Zamiel's violet eyes darkened. "He's hiding something," he said, his voice soft but sharp. "I've heard whispers in the pack—Tai Bailing's seeking immortality, trading with Voss. My gadgets can't confirm it, but the androids' cores... they're demonic, not just mechanical. Voss is no mortal."

Xavier's jaw tightened, the Bloodpearl's vision flashing again: Tai Bailing, his eyes glowing with unnatural light, accepting Voss's chalice. "Immortality," Xavier muttered, the word bitter. "He's selling us out to a demon king. For eternal life."

Lyra's grip on his hand tightened, her green eyes blazing. "He won't live long enough to enjoy it," she said, her voice fierce. "You're the last enigma, my mate. The Bloodstone will make you unstoppable, and I'll be at your side—your queen, when we take his throne."

Lucian's grin was grim, his arm tightening around Zamiel. "The pack's loyalty is fraying," he said. "I'm with you, brother, but if Tai Bailing's calling us in, we need to move fast. The Glade's our only shot."

Zamiel nodded, his sphere humming. "I can rig traps along the way," he said, his voice resolute. "Slow the androids, keep us safe. My healing will hold us together, but the Glade... it's not just a place. It's alive."

The forest moaned again, the fog curling tighter, shadows twisting into shapes that weren't quite trees. Xavier's Bloodpearl flared, a vision flickering: a glade of black stone, the Bloodstone glowing at its center, guarded by eyes that weren't human. Roshan hummed, its runes flaring, as if eager for the fight. The Hollowed Glade was near, its curse calling to the enigma within him, to the mate at his side, to the friends at his back.

"We move now," Xavier said, his voice steady despite the Bloodpearl's fire. "The Glade holds the Bloodstone, and it holds answers. Tai Bailing's betrayal ends with us."

Lyra's hand squeezed his, her warmth a beacon. "For us," she murmured, her voice a vow, her eyes promising a future beyond the blood.

Lucian clapped his shoulder, Zamiel's gadget glowing in his hand. "Lead on, brother," Lucian said, his voice warm but edged with steel. "Zamiel's got us covered. Let's tear this shroud apart."

The moon watched, unyielding, as Xavier led the way into the fog, Lyra at his side, Lucian and Zamiel at his back, the Bloodpearl pulsing, Roshan whispering, and a destiny shrouded in blood calling them deeper—to rebellion, to love, to a throne waiting to be claimed.
