Chapter 11 - The Morning of Truth

The notice board outside the academy pavilion drew a larger crowd than any match. Players, coaches, and parents swarmed the area, eyes hungry, breath held. Today, the district trial selectors would announce who had made the final district team squad. For Mohith, Pavan, and Dhruva, this moment loomed like judgment day.Pavan clutched his bat handle nervously, chewing his lip. Dhruva rolled his old ragged ball between his palms the way one rubs beads in silent prayer.Mohith stood still, cracked bat on his shoulder, gaze sharp. Unlike his friends, he did not fidget. He only whispered to himself:Mohith (inner voice):

"We gave them everything. If they still deny us… then so be it. But no one can say we didn't fight."Inside the BoardroomInside, the selectors argued till the very last moment.Selector 2:

"Look at the trial results! Mohith—century! Pavan—half century! Dhruva—dismissed Arjun on the very first ball! They earned their places."Selector 1 (scoffing):

"Earned? They're street cricketers. They don't have state-level technique. Their gear is a disgrace. What happens when they face boys seasoned from elite academies? They'll collapse and make us a laughingstock."Arjun's father leaned forward, voice calm, almost silken.

Arjun's Father:

"Selectors, think carefully. My son is a proven asset. He deserves to open for the district. But these outsiders… liability. Choosing them over seasoned boys? That would be reckless."The head selector closed his eyes for a long moment, tapping his pen. He had seen something during the matches—fire, heart, raw potential that no polish could buy. But politics screamed from every side. Finally, he slammed the pen down.

Head Selector:

"Enough. The names go up now. The ground will judge them later."The Board PostedThe sheet was pinned against the wooden board with two sharp tacks. Silence blanketed the crowd before chaos erupted as boys shoved, craning their necks to read.Pavan pushed forward, his breath caught in his throat. Dhruva hesitated at the edge, too fearful to even look. Mohith walked straight through the crowd and stopped before the paper. The names listed glared back. One after another. The District Team – AnnouncedArjun Sharma – BatsmanRakesh Iyer – WicketkeeperMohith Rao – BatsmanPavan Kumar – All-rounder (anchor order)Dhruva Naidu – SpinnerPlus 7 other academy boysAt first, both Pavan and Dhruva froze. Blinking. Disbelieving. Staring at their names typed neatly on official district paper.Pavan's lips trembled.

Pavan:

"We… we made it? We actually—?"Dhruva's hands shook so badly he nearly dropped his ball.Mohith's cracked bat lowered from his shoulder. His lips pressed into a fierce but calm smile."Yes. We're here. Against all odds."The BacklashBut not everyone cheered. Murmurs of resentment filled the crowd.Academy Parent:

"They let in kids with second-hand shoes? Unfair!"

Another player:

"Dhruva isn't even proper academy standard—how could they pick him?"

Arjun's ally:

"This is a joke. District cricket will be ruined."The atmosphere soured quickly. Mohith could feel the venom in the air. From a distance, Arjun glared, fists balled. His golden-duck humiliation in yesterday's trial was still bleeding in his memory like an open wound. But his name was still there, position unchallenged.Arjun (inner voice, bitter):

"Fine. Let them enter. It only means I get more chances to humiliate them under bigger lights. Especially Mohith."His father approached the head selector with a cold handshake.

Arjun's Father (quiet threat):

"You've made your choice. Just pray it doesn't shame you."Quiet TriumphAway from the noise, the three friends stood in the corner of the ground.Pavan still shook his head, disbelief heavy.

Pavan:

"My father won't believe this… we're in the district team. Mohith, do you even understand what this means?"Mohith looked to the horizon, voice quiet but steel-forged:

Mohith:

"It means we've climbed the first wall. But beyond this wall… there are mountains higher, storms harsher. Don't celebrate too soon."Dhruva finally smiled a small, rare smile.

Dhruva:

"Still… for once, it feels like the world heard us."The three shared a look of unspoken gratitude—bound not just by friendship, but by a destiny that had pulled them into battle together.Closing SceneThat evening, Mohith sat under the twilight outside the academy, staring at his bat. Children from local neighborhoods had gathered nearby, staring at him with wide eyes.Small boy (whispering):

"That's him… Mohith… the street kid who made district trials."Mohith smiled faintly, lifting the bat above his lap. For the first time, the cracks in the wood looked less like scars—and more like proof.Mohith (inner voice):

"This bat was never broken. It was forged by every hardship. And now… it will carry me to battles bigger than this."Far away, under floodlights, Arjun practiced alone in fury. Each stroke looked sharper, harder. His voice whispered under his breath, venom thick:Arjun:

"Mohith, your victory ends here. In the district matches… I'll destroy you before the whole world."Cut to black.
