Chapter 6 - We Are Close!

The QUAX's arms were equipped with powerful ammunition and energy beams that was sure to rip a human to shreds. However, we decided to use ammunition first due to the number of times energy beams could be employed.

We weren't trained to use them since they were military grade weapons but in a situation like, we didn't have any choice.

Thrrriiihh~ Thrrihhh~

I thrust my arm forward and fired multiple shots that took an infected down.

The ammunition rounds blasted the infected to pieces, causing blood and chunks of flesh to splatter all over the white walls.

The sound of every shot fired was very low due to the inbuilt silencer so the chances of attracting infected from the lower floors because of noise was much lower.

Thrrriiihh~ Thrrihhh~

Behind me, Bolaji also aimed at the incoming infected and shot at multiple of them.

Due to the heavy power of the ammunition, the walls and even the floors got riddled with holes.

After a little while, all eleven infected roaming the corridors had their body parts scattered across the place.

Steam slowly erupted from different corners that were riddled with blood and holes.

It was a sight that anyone with a weak stomach wouldn't be able to handle.

Fortunately, Bolaji and I were able to walk it off.

The door to the fortified soundproof room had been shut and I could tell that the others were watching through the CCTV monitors.

Though I didn't like Mr. Timmy, I hoped they would all be safe. The next step was to get to the lower floors but instead of taking the stairs this time, we headed towards the elevator.

Unlike hours ago when we were unable to make use of the elevator due to the high population, this time, no one was around here.

We got in and noticed there were flesh chunks and bloody handprints on the walls but no infected in sight.

Ting~

The elevator began to descend after we inputted the first floor.

It was a very tall building so the descent took quite the time. I was worried something would even go wrong but fortunately, we started to close in on the first floor after a couple of minutes.

As we closed in on the first floor, we could hear screams and weird incoherent noises, which told us that the building was still very much infested.

Finally, the wait was over, and the doors opened, ushering us into the first floor.

"I'll be damned," Bolaji's jaw nearly dropped the instant we moved out of the elevator.

It was impossible to count the numbers...

Outside the elevator, a horde of infected charged toward us.

Staring up ahead at the exit of the building, which was at the northwest corner, I realized it wouldn't be easy to get there.

The best decision anyone could make at this moment would have been to get back into the elevator... but... we weren't anyone.

"Kychbbblllll!"

Within the array of purple mist emitting from their figures, weird noises rang out.

We exchanged glances and I saw steel determination in Bolaji's eyes.

We didn't know if we were going to survive, but first, we had to fight.

"I'll open a path. You watch my back in case we get surrounded," I said to Bolaji before charging forward.

Thirrriiiihhh~ Thirrriiiihhh~Thirrriiiihhh~Thirrriiiihhh~

Low sounds of ammunition being fired rang out as I stretched forth my hand and fired powerful shots at the incoming infected.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Pop!

Some infected were instantly blasted to smithereens as the projectiles did well to remove everything in their path.

Pop!

Some of them were decapitated by the powerful shots, while others got their heads blasted to pieces like they were watermelons.

Bolaji followed behind me and took shots at the infected coming from the sides, as well as the ones who circled around us.

Despite the strength of the battle QUAX arms, the sheer number of infected were overwhelming.

For every ten I destroyed, twenty others seemed to take their place.

"Kiiooouhhh!"

"Kiiooohhh!"

Halfway through the path that led to the exit, the infected had piled up like crazy. There were so many blocking the path that they had stacked upon one another, trying to get to us.

Seeing how over thirty of them were climbing atop each other in a frenzy up ahead and up to twenty were coming at us from the sides , I yelled something at Bolaji.

"I'm going to use the energy beam!"

Bolaji's eyes widened in alarm. He swiftly turnrd around and squatted in response.

I proceeded to place my left hand on the QUAX arm for support with my facial expression turning intense as I activated the energy beam.

Thooooouummm~

I held the battle Quax arm forward, aiming at the horde as a blue beam gathered around the metallic fingertips.

The stacks of infected were only two steps away when I released the beam of energy.

Booomm~

It shot forward with intensity, emitting a powerful suction force that pulled all the infected up ahead into its glow before exploding.

The first floor quaked from the intensity of the blast as a truck sized hole appeared in the wall where the exit was located.

I got sent flying backwards due to the recoil and slammed onto the ground, before sliding across it for a couple of feet.

My head rang intensely as I laid in place for a moment.

"Victor!"

I couldn't hear his voice due to the ringing in my ear, but reading the movements of Bolaji's lips, I could tell he was calling my name.

"Come on, man, we gotta go," Bolaji added and helped me get back to my feet.

My head was still ringing, but fortunately, all the infected ahead had been vaporized from the energy beam.

A clear path to the exit had been created before us. Bolaji wrapped my left arm across his shoulder as we hurried to get out of the place.

It took some time for me to regain my balance, but we weren't safe yet.

We got past the first challenge. Now, we needed to fight our way through the others.

The streets were in chaos. People screamed and fled as the infected came after them with outstretched hands and bared teeth.

The purple mist was even more concentrated outside due to their sheer numbers.

"Everyone, please get to somewhere safe and take shelter! We are controlling the situation!" Those were the words of the cops as they shot at the infected and also advised the people to get back into their houses.

However, their advice was in vain as more people kept on parading around and the infected kept on multiplying.

This was to be expected since a lot of people still had ways to go before reaching their houses or a safe location.

The infected also seemed drawn to noise of shots fired. They charged towards the cops with more frenzy.

In a few minutes, many cops went down, but that was not our cross to bear.

As we hurried along, we passed banks, hospitals, and stores that were being looted.

Violence broke out in different places as the cops failed to keep normalcy at bay. The fear and tension in the air didn't help matters at all.

Some of the officers even got infected, and the non infected ones had to shoot their former colleagues.

So as not to waste our ammunition, Bolaji and I made sure to keep to shortcuts and corners that kept us away from the streets.

We avoided dark alleyways due to low visibility. We didn't want to be food for infected in the dark.

Although, we could have obtained a vehicle, most roads were blocked. It would be unwise to hijack a car right now. That would only further slow us down.

After many minutes of jogging, the skies were starting to get dark.

When we got to a corner, we stopped briefly as I pulled out my phone to call Bella.

She instantly picked up.

"Victor! Where are—"

I cut her off. "We are close to your home. There might not be time for me to call when we get there so we need someone to open the gate for us as soon as we arrive."

"Alright, babe!" I could hear the glee in her voice.

"I'll be here with my dad!"

"Okay." I hung up immediately afterwards.

I gave Bolaji a nod, and we continued on our journey.

A few minutes later, we got to Bella's street.

"Come on, we are close!"

Suddenly, an infected charged towards me from a building on the right...

I hesitated briefly upon recognizing the face of the postman who always greeted me whenever we ran into each other.

He was a single father with two kids, and I remembered him being a pretty chill guy.

"~Sigh~"

Unfortunately, he was no longer the person I used to know.

"I'm sorry..."

Bang!

I shot him in the neck, causing his head to get instantly decapitated and spin across the air like a dodgeball.

As his corpse fell, I hoped he would find peace and transition to a better place.

'I hope his kids are safe...' Although this thought bothered me, there was nothing I could do at the moment.

"Faster! They are coming behind us!"

I turned my head around and was shocked to see the horde of infected pursuing us.

"Where the hell did they come from?" It felt like they had just appeared out of nowhere.
