Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Infrastructure Peril

Chapter 15: Infrastructure Peril

Starling City's night air was thick with the acrid bite of burnt metal and dust, the scars of the first seismic wave etched into cracked streets and shattered windows. Luke climbed to a skyscraper's ledge, the wind sharp, carrying the distant wail of sirens and the city's restless hum, a pulse of life under siege. His sneakers gripped the gritty concrete, debris crunching underfoot, his jacket flapping as he popped a piece of candy, the sugar's sharp burst a fleeting shield against the urgency knotting his chest. The Foundry's monitors had flashed red with impact zones, the team's tension a living thing, and Luke knew the second wave would be Slade's killing blow. This is his endgame, and I'm running out of lives. His fingers brushed his cracked phone, its dim screen flickering, a small anchor as he scanned the skyline, its lights faltering like a dying star.

The System flared, its interface a bright pulse, steadying his racing heart.

Luke launched skyward, the city blurring below, the wind stinging his eyes, his Gadgeteer goggles humming, their lenses amplifying his scan for sonic emitters. "Felicity, full grid sweep. Target the surviving low-frequency emitters," he said, his voice steady despite the altitude, the comms crackling like a distant fire.

Felicity's voice was taut, her typing a frantic clatter. "You're my aerial bomb squad, Luke. Don't dawdle!"

He flew low, his senses screaming, pinpointing devices in bridges, tunnels, and utility hubs, their faint hum a deadly promise, like a heartbeat in the dark. His tools—tweezers, a micro-wrench—danced in his hands, disarming three emitters mid-flight, the dizzying blur of speed and precision burning through his stamina, his goggles fogging with his ragged breath. The city sprawled below, its lights flickering, the air heavy with the scent of rain and ruin.

The ground bucked, a grinding roar of steel and concrete shattering the night as Slade triggered the second wave. Luke's heart lurched, his goggles highlighting a bridge and rail tunnel, both collapsing, their supports splintering like bone. "Luke! Bridge and tunnel—I can't reach them!" Oliver shouted, his voice sharp, cutting through the comms.

Luke phased through the tunnel's concrete wall, the cold vacuum of the quantum shift jarring, his goggles glinting as he found a glowing orb, its hum a menacing pulse. He disabled it with a wrench, the metal warm in his hand, his fingers trembling, but the tunnel roof groaned, cracks spiderwebbing, dust choking the air.

He summoned the Mystic Arts, orange energy lines binding the collapsing roof, the air crackling with heat, his chest burning, his vision blurring as he poured everything into holding the structure, his knees buckling under the strain.

Luke phased out, collapsing outside, the ground hard, his goggles slipping, his breath ragged as dizziness blinded him. He spat the candy, its sweetness lost, his voice a gasp. "Quake part two, done. Someone owe me a nap."

Back in the Foundry, the team gathered, exhausted but resolute, the air heavy with antiseptic and the faint bitterness of Felicity's coffee. Oliver stood by the tactical map, his green leather scuffed, his voice heavy with the weight of the attack. "We contained it, but Slade's still ahead. He's playing us."

Luke, propped up by Sara, her baton twirling slowly, her eyes sharp with concern, studied the map, his empathy pulsing to lift the team's spirits, his fingers tracing a cracked mug, its warmth faint but grounding. "Slade's got ARGUS leaks and surprise," he said, his voice firm despite the ache in his ribs. "The sabotage is too slick for Isabel's crew alone. And Nyssa—she knows more about the Artifact of the Ages than she's saying."

[SYSTEM: EMPATHY MOTIVATES.]

[SYSTEM: EVOLUTION POINTS GAINED: +20 EP.]

He leaned forward, the mug clinking, his mind racing through a mental rehearsal of the Mystic Arts, calculating their next move, the air heavy with the team's resolve. "We need Nanda Parbat. Scout the League, force a truce on our terms. It's our only shot."

[SYSTEM: WEAVING POWER SPEND (MENTAL REHEARSAL).]

Felicity's eyes widened, her fingers pausing, her ponytail bouncing. "You want to waltz into the League's lair? That's… bold, Luke."

He grinned, popping another candy, the wrapper crinkling, his resolve hardening like steel. "Truce or treat, Felicity. Time to sneak into the fortress of shadows."

Sara's baton paused, her smirk sharp. "You're nuts, Cupid, but I'm in."

The city's pulse thrummed through the walls, a call to Nanda Parbat, the League's heart waiting like a storm on the horizon, its shadows promising answers and danger in equal measure.
