"Adults should cherish and protect children. Even a hopeless scumbag like me holds on to that core belief. It must never waver."
He is the protagonist of this story. He died in his previous life and was reincarnated into the world of Classroom of the Elite. In his past life, the original story didn't exist. Based on his surroundings, he believes he has been reincarnated into the world of a story. The cause of his death in his previous life was blood loss from being stabbed by a woman.
In his previous life, he dropped out of middle school and drifted aimlessly, but something spurred him to study hard and earn his high school equivalency diploma. After that, he was admitted to a university's medical school. If he had entered this school with his past life's stats, they would have looked like this:
Past Life Stats (Completely Objective)

His academic ability was originally good. His physical ability was extremely low, but this was not a congenital issue. He fully inherits the advantages from his past life, and his stats have risen (especially his judgment) because he has become uninhibited after his death. His skills are so great that he can overwhelm a young Sakayanagi in chess, but he's getting pretty flustered lately because he can't win against her anymore.
He loves children and despises people who mess with kids for their own adult convenience. Therefore, Chabashira-sensei's actions in the original story are a major trigger for him. When Sakayanagi told him about the White Room when he was eight years old, he looked so disgusted that she has considered it a taboo subject ever since.
He has known Sakayanagi since he was in the first grade of elementary school. He spoke to the beautiful, aloof young girl, and they became friends. Since then, she has been a pillar of emotional support for him. Although it may seem like Sakayanagi has one-sided feelings for him, the truth is that he has an even greater, massive amount of affection for her. He is currently considering various routes for Horikita and other heroines, but a route where he doesn't meet Sakayanagi in their childhood cannot exist. The reason for that is something he will tell them before they graduate.
He is the undisputed number one in the handsome rankings. He has been vying with Hirata for popularity among the girls since his first day of school because he was talking with Horikita. He's incredibly popular due to his good-natured personality and good looks, but he's a scumbag who has no intention of getting serious with anyone. He brags about wanting to be a kept man, but it's unclear whether he truly means it.

"You can't just throw away a fish you've already caught. It's unforgivable."
She is the heroine and protagonist of this story. As stated at the end of the first chapter, she is the "promised victory" heroine. Once the main story is finished, she wants to write a bad ending route as well. Her relationship with Saitou is the classic childhood friend trope. She remembers every word of the situation when Saitou first spoke to her, and she uses it to tease him at every opportunity. She originally planned to confess to Saitou when they graduated from A-Class, but since Saitou unexpectedly turned out to be a "yandere" (mentally unstable), she's in a hurry to capture him. Saitou said he wanted her to be happy with another man, but she has no such intention.
There were many comments from readers predicting a conflict between Sakayanagi's father and Saitou, but Sakayanagi's father understands Saitou's true nature and supports their romance. Besides, Saitou was the only friend Sakayanagi had in first grade, so her father cherishes him like another son. Therefore, the reason Saitou was assigned to D-Class is something else entirely. When he found out that Saitou had caused his middle school-aged daughter to cry by "mama-hunting" (dating older women for money), he was quietly furious, but he sensed the deep-seated problem behind Saitou's actions and believes that only his daughter can solve it.
Because she has been chasing a genius (the reincarnated Saitou) who surpasses her, her stats have risen dramatically compared to the original story. Her cooperativeness, in particular, has risen by three levels compared to the original, and her chess skills have also improved significantly. As a result, the A-Class factional disputes ended with Sakayanagi making concessions. However, the lack of a factional dispute doesn't mean that Sakayanagi has given up on taking over A-Class, and she is constantly looking for an opportunity to do so.
She eats Saitou's homemade food every morning and night, and on weekdays, she even eats the bento he makes for her for lunch. Lately, she's been asking for two of the same bento, and Saitou makes them for her, thinking, "I guess she's at a growing age..."

"It seems I'm so drawn to these people that I've naturally learned to smile in just two months. It was an incredibly ticklish and... pleasant feeling for me."
The well-known protagonist of the original story. Compared to the original, he is more emotionally expressive and has grown so much that he can even smile with genuine feeling. He considers Saitou his best friend because he helped him during his self-introduction. He is also indebted to Saitou for inviting him to hang out and pairing up with him for P.E. Lately, he's been amused by the envious looks Horikita gives them when they pair up.
Saitou has been teaching him how to communicate at every opportunity. As a result, unlike in the original story, where he felt alienated from the Three Idiots because he couldn't talk to them properly, he seems to be able to communicate well with them in this story. Unlike the original story, he didn't deal with the past exam questions, didn't buy Sudo's points, and didn't interact with Horikita's brother, so Horikita doesn't harbor any suspicion toward him. However, during the fake surveillance camera plan, he learned that Saitou had higher expectations for him than for her, which made her incredibly jealous.
He is curious about the reason Saitou was assigned to D-Class. He was also slightly shocked when he saw Saitou's unexpected true nature during the Sakura stalker incident. However, since Saitou doesn't pry into his past, he's somewhat okay with it, thinking, "Everyone has their secrets." But this rift will later cause a major shift in the story.

"It would be dishonest of me to only have you help me and not give my all. Kushida's cooperation is essential to get to A-Class. I thought it would be nothing but selfishness to reject that based on my personal feelings."
The person who has grown the most since entering the school. She is the second most-grown person after the original, with Sakayanagi being first. Compared to the original story, her judgment has gone up by one level and her cooperativeness has gone up by five. She no longer looks down on people who lack academic ability or intelligence and has learned to honestly acknowledge others' strengths. As a result, she's not as harsh on the Three Idiots as she was in the original and has a fairly good relationship with them.
Like Ayanokouji, she was captivated by the good communicator Saitou. Saitou saw her interaction with her brother, and after he pointed out her mistakes and she despaired, he comforted her. Although it's not described in this story, she had trouble sleeping because of the scent of the man she fell for on her bed. However, she has never had romantic feelings before, and the only feeling she had close to it was her admiration for her brother, so she is confused by her own emotions. I'm really looking forward to her reaction when she realizes it's love.

"Wow! Horikita-san in her casual clothes!"
It was a Sunday afternoon. The three of us were at Keyaki Mall to fulfill our promise with Horikita-san. I was excited to see Horikita-san in her casual clothes, which was a rare sight.
"...It's not that rare. You'll have plenty of opportunities to see me like this from now on."
"Does that mean you want to go out more with us...? "
"Shut up."
"Ow!"
Ayanokouji-kun made a straight-faced joke, but her retort seemed to hurt a little.
"Well, you were in your uniform when you stayed over the other day, too. And after the celebration the other day, we all went straight to Ayanokouji-kun's room after school."
"Geez. Don't make my room your hangout... wait, stayed over?"
Ah, crap. I forgot it was a secret. As I cowered in fear of the fist that was probably coming from Horikita-san, Ayanokouji-kun, looking unusually excited, started talking.
"Staying over means...! It's 'that,' right!"
"What 'that' are you talking about?"
Horikita-san shot a sharp glare at Ayanokouji-kun, who had started talking about something vulgar in the middle of the day. I understand how you feel, but if you say it out loud, it's over.
"I'm sorry..."
"That was close. Ayanokouji-kun took all the heat for me... "You too, Saitou-kun." Aaaah!"
She pinched my side with an incredible amount of force in her fingers. Jeez, where does all that strength come from in that slender body?
"Oww... I'm sure that's going to leave a mark! I won't be able to get married..."
"Stop saying stupid things and let's go. So, what do we do first?"
I hugged my side and protested, but Horikita-san was impatient and couldn't contain her desire to have fun.
"Then... first, we've gotta go here!"

At the arcade
"Ugh...! This is hard. One more time!"
"You're terrible, Horikita. I'll get it for you... hey, what?"
"You're not even lifting it! Just give it to me!"
"Ah, that's a probability machine, so you shouldn't do it."
"Is that even fair...?"
"Go! Get there! There it is!"
"...Aren't you too serious, Tsugumi?"
"What are you talking about, Ayanokouji-kun! 'Minna de Derby' is the only legal horse racing we can do!"
"...Say something to them, Horikita."
"The expected value is probably to bet on this one... no, but this horse is not doing well in this race."
"These guys are hopeless. I have to do something about them soon."
"That's a punching machine. You try it, Ayanokouji-kun."
"Okay, but what's the average score?"
"The average is around 500, and really strong people get over 900."
"I see... Hmph!"
"814 kg! You're number one all-time!"
"...Hey, the second place isn't even 300 kg. What's going on?"
"I don't know."
"Hey, wait!"
"Oh! I'm so nostalgic for this game!"
"...The machine looks pretty clean for an old one, though."
"I looked it up, and apparently, it was just released last month."
"N-no... I meant I've played the old version. The old version."
"Hmm."
"A-alright! Let's go to the next one!"
---------
At the bowling alley
"The person with the lowest score has to buy the drinks."
"Every yen counts for me. I'm gonna win."
"...Why do boys enjoy such vulgar competitions?"
Tsugumi: 252 points, Kiyopon: 240 points, Tsundere Heroine: 163 points
"Alright. My wallet is safe."
"You're not digging your own grave, Ayanokouji-kun? Everyone around us is looking at us."
"...You tricked me, Tsugumi."
"Hey, I didn't do anything!"
"...Her name is 'Tsundere.' And 'Heroine' is also weird..."
---------
At the karaoke bar
"~♪ ~~~♪"
"96.567 points!"
"Hehe. I'm amazing, right?"
"You are, but... you only sing songs that are popular with girls."
"True."
"What!? Then you sing something, Ayanokouji-kun!"
"Okay... Oh, here it is, I just have to sing to this right?"
"100.000 points!"
"..."
"I took piano and calligraphy lessons. This is easy."
"...That has nothing to do with it."
---------
After that, we had dinner at the food court in Keyaki Mall, and the three of us walked home side by side.
"That was so much fun! We played for seven hours!"
"Time flew by. What about you, Horikita? Did you have fun?"
I was the one leading the conversation for a change. Maybe it was because Saitou and Horikita were friends I didn't have to be on guard with. Still, it's a huge step up for me from when I first started school.
"...I did."
"Hmm?"
I couldn't hear her clearly, so I asked again. Maybe my attitude annoyed her, because Horikita pouted and repeated herself.
"I said I had fun. Are your ears working?"
"I see, that's good then."
After my last word, silence fell. I looked to Saitou for help, but he put a finger to his lips, signaling for me to be quiet. Just before I couldn't take the silence anymore, Horikita began to speak haltingly.
"It was... really fun. I can't really... put it into words, but thank you."
"You should thank Saitou. He chose all the places we went to."
"Doesn't that make you sad? I don't think Horikita-san's thanks are just for today."
His words didn't make much sense, but I soon found out why.
"...To be honest, I wouldn't have been able to handle things this well with just my own power. Both with the exams and with this recent incident."
"I didn't do anything, though. Saitou was the one who distributed the past exams, and Saitou was the one who came up with the fake camera plan."
"Even so... I still feel like I haven't thanked you yet. I can see now how horrible I was in the beginning."
Indeed, Horikita has changed for the better since the start of school. ...I just wish she would stop hitting me so much. While I was thinking that, Horikita stopped and looked at me.
"Let me say it again. Ayanokouji-kun, thank you for sticking with me."
"What's with the sudden formality?"
Horikita's unusually serious expression made me feel something I had never felt before. I wanted to give her a proper answer, but for some reason, different words came out of my mouth. I thought my words would offend her, but instead, she held out her right hand.
"And, you are an indispensable person for me to get to A-Class. So... well, I would be very happy if you would continue to cooperate with me like before."
"I second that! You're a one-man army, Ayanokouji-kun!"
Saitou slapped my shoulder without any hesitation. Usually, I would have resisted or said something, but my mind, which has been praised as a "masterpiece," wasn't working.
"...Yeah, of course. I'm counting on you."
--- What is this feeling? Is it because Horikita and Saitou have acknowledged my abilities? Or am I just on a high after having fun?
[This world is all about winning. The process doesn't matter.]
Shut up. I know that... I know that I'm a hopeless defective product.
"A piece of advice, from your elder, Ayanokouji-kun."
Saitou spoke to me more gently than ever before, as I was getting a headache from all the mixed emotions. It was like a parent showing affection to a child... a feeling I had never known.
"I don't know your past, and I don't want to know it. What's important is the present. If you keep pushing away the hands that people offer you, you'll eventually become a hopeless scumbag... A scumbag like me."
I couldn't hear the last part, but his words were an impossibly sweet poison to me. A poison that felt like it was repainting my pure white heart with vibrant colors.
"--- So, why don't you just relax for now? If there's something that's troubling you, I'll do my best to protect you, and so will Horikita-san."
[It doesn't matter what I have to sacrifice. As long as I win in the end, that's all that matters.]
--- Ahh... This is no good. If I'm going to feel this way, I should have just stayed in that place and rotted away... We won't be able to see each other ever again after graduation anyway.
"Sorry. I'm going to head back first. I forgot I had some homework to do."
"Ayanokouji-kun...?"
"It's okay, Horikita-san. Let him do what he wants."
The two of them were talking behind me, but I didn't have the composure to listen. I felt everything that had formed me cracking. But strangely, it didn't feel bad.
"Three more years, huh."
I'm going to have to go back after graduation anyway. Can't I be selfish for just three years? I pictured the face of that man who I had grown tired of seeing. Is this what a rebellious phase feels like?
"I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
"Then you'd better go home and finish your homework quickly, Ayanokouji-kun."
"...Yeah."
