Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Daring Games

Jade wasn't sure how Lila always managed to turn an ordinary evening into something that left her chest fluttering for days. Tonight, it was a casual sleepover—at least, that's what Lila had called it. She'd texted Jade earlier in the week: "Bring comfy clothes. We're staying up late. I have snacks, games, and trouble planned."

Jade had laughed at the message, but the truth was, her heart had been racing ever since. Trouble, in Lila's language, usually meant a mix of laughter, teasing, and moments that left Jade lying awake wondering what it all meant.

When she arrived, Lila was already sprawled across the bed in pajama shorts and a tank top, her hair down around her shoulders. "Took you long enough," she teased, patting the spot beside her. "Come on, we've got a whole night ahead of us."

Jade rolled her eyes, trying to act calm as she set her bag down. "You text like a criminal mastermind," she said, climbing onto the bed.

"Only because I am one," Lila replied with a grin. "Tonight's game is truth or dare. But be warned—I play dirty."

Jade's pulse quickened. "Truth or dare? We're not in high school."

"Exactly," Lila said, eyes sparkling. "Which means no rules. Except… if you pick the truth, you have to be honest. And if you dare, you have to follow through."

Jade groaned dramatically. "This is going to end badly."

"Or perfectly," Lila countered, her grin mischievous.

They began lighthearted, with silly dares and harmless questions. But quickly, the game shifted. Lila dared Jade to sing a verse of a ridiculous song at the top of her lungs. Jade dared Lila to eat popcorn with chopsticks. They laughed until their sides ached, pillows scattered, the mood bright and playful.

Then, the questions grew bolder.

"Truth," Jade said on her turn, curious but nervous.

Lila tilted her head, her smile softening into something slower. "Okay… what's one thing you've wanted to say to me but haven't?"

Jade froze. Her heart thudded in her chest, her mouth suddenly dry. She wanted to blurt it out—to confess how much Lila made her heart race, how she thought about her even when she wasn't around. But the words tangled, too heavy to speak.

So instead, she smiled nervously and said, "That you're… annoyingly good at making me laugh."

Lila studied her for a long moment, clearly seeing the dodge, but she only smiled. "I'll take that. For now."

Later, it was Jade's turn to ask. "Truth or dare?"

"Dare," Lila replied instantly, her eyes gleaming.

Jade hesitated, then grinned. "I dare you to… stay completely still while I tickle you."

Lila's eyes widened. "That's evil."

"You picked dare," Jade teased.

"Fine," Lila said, lying back dramatically and spreading her arms. "Do your worst."

Jade laughed as she poked at Lila's sides, earning squirming giggles and muffled squeals. Lila tried desperately to stay still, but within seconds she was writhing, tears of laughter streaming down her face.

"You're cheating!" Jade accused.

"You're ruthless!" Lila shot back, grabbing a pillow and whacking Jade with it.

Soon, the game dissolved into a full-blown pillow fight. They wrestled across the bed, laughter echoing through the room, until Jade ended up pinned beneath Lila, both of them breathless.

The laughter faded slowly, replaced by something quieter, heavier. Lila's hands rested on either side of Jade, their faces inches apart, hair falling like a curtain around them. Jade's heart raced, every nerve alive with the closeness.

"You're blushing again," Lila whispered, her voice low, playful but tender.

"Am not," Jade muttered, though her cheeks burned.

"You so are," Lila teased, brushing a stray strand of hair from Jade's face. The touch lingered, gentle, deliberate. "It's cute."

Jade swallowed hard, her chest tightening. She wanted to say something, to bridge the gap between them, but words felt impossible. All she could do was meet Lila's gaze, caught in the warmth and intensity of it.

For a long moment, neither of them moved. The air felt thick, charged, as though the world was holding still just for them.

Then Lila grinned, breaking the tension with a wink. "Your turn. Truth or dare?"

Jade let out the breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "Dare," she said quickly, her voice shaky.

Lila's smile turned mischievous again. "I dare you to… admit one thing you're scared to say out loud."

Jade froze, her pulse hammering. She wanted to laugh it off, to deflect, but the look in Lila's eyes—playful but soft, daring but kind—made it impossible.

So she whispered, "I'm scared of… how much I like this. Us. You."

Lila's eyes softened instantly, her grin fading into something tender. She leaned just a fraction closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "Good. Because I'm not scared at all."

The words wrapped around Jade like a secret promise. They didn't kiss—not yet. But the tension lingered, stronger than ever, a spark waiting to catch fire.

That night, as Jade lay awake beside Lila, listening to her steady breathing, she realized something had shifted. The flirting, the teasing, the games—they weren't just distractions anymore. They were building something real, something that both thrilled and terrified her.

And she wasn't sure she wanted to hold back much longer.
