Zeke Rayn has left.
Noah then left as well.
Only Makarov and Dolanbart remained in the office.
"Any news?"
Makarov asked Dolanbart with practiced ease, and the latter, unsurprisingly, shook his head.
"The Western Continent has a very tight information blockade. Even the most elite intelligence personnel in the action force would need at least five or six years to collect enough useful intelligence."
Upon hearing this reply, Makarov nodded slightly, showing no sign of disappointment. He looked at Dolanbart and said, "Thank you for your hard work, Mester."
"No, President!"
"If you really think I'm having a hard time, then let me go back to the guild."
"Doranbart," or rather "Mester," looked aggrieved and immediately poured out her grievances to Makarov, "Chairman, you have no idea how terrifying Lahar's insight is."
"I even suspect that he has realized that I am a Fairy Tail spy planted in the Council. I am under a lot of pressure."
"Recently, I've been planning to use magic to seal away the memories of my guild, otherwise I'm really afraid that one day my identity will be exposed."
Nine years ago, in order to use the Magic Council's power to investigate a certain intelligence in the Western Continent, Makarov sent Mester to infiltrate the Council.
With the magic of "teleportation" and "memory," Mester, using the alias "Doranbalt," rose to the rank of vice-captain of the action force in less than five years, her power second only to the councilor and Captain-General Lahar.
Of course, in order to prevent her identity from being exposed, with Makarov's permission, Meester made a small alteration to the memories of her guildmates, hiding her own existence.
Nine years have passed, but Makarov still hasn't obtained the intelligence he needs. However, this cannot be blamed on Mester, whose position does not allow him to mobilize more personnel to investigate the Western Continent.
As for getting promoted to gain more power?
Keep in mind that the next level up is the councilor, and even Laharl remained in the same position as the captain for seven or eight years, let alone Mester, the vice-captain.
"Three years later, then another three years, then another three years..."
"It's been almost ten years, President. When will this ever end..."
Meester was filled with bitterness, which made Makarov, who was listening to his complaints, feel guilty and immediately wanted to increase his undercover funding.
As for ending Meester's undercover career, Makarov said it would definitely happen next year.
Mester looked resentful, but the thought of receiving both Makarov's funds and the Council's high salary instantly made her feel much better.
After Mester left, the office became quiet.
As Makarov flipped through the records of Noah's interrogation of Gerald, one name made him clench his fist.
With slightly trembling hands, she took a photo album from the drawer, a record of some of the happiest moments in Mrs. Macallo's life.
The short old man flipped through the photo album and skillfully found a group photo of six people. In the photo, Makarov was still very young, and he was smiling happily surrounded by his five teammates.
However, as his companions gradually left the guild to pursue their own dreams, the once happy team was left with only Makarov, but they still kept in touch.
Except for one person.
Stroking the old photographs, looking at the one of his long-lost companions, Makarov murmured to himself:
"Is this why Erza joined our guild?"
"I haven't heard from you all these years. So you've already left us... Rob..."
"Tell them this news."
That very night, a councilor, two magic guild leaders, and a hermit healer all received a letter from Fairy Tail.
The letter was signed by Makarov.
The letter contained only one sentence:
Seven years ago, Rob died in the undiscovered Tower of Paradise while protecting the children.
The bright moon hangs high in the sky, and the stars fill the heavens.
The spring night still carried a hint of chill, and the night breeze, carrying a coolness, swept through the open balcony, gently lifting a few strands of the girl's long, rosy hair.
The girl sat on the ground with her head buried in her chest, the moonlight casting a long, lonely shadow.
The human figure was as lonely as the moon's shadow.
The battle with Jellal reminded Erza of the old man with the "Flying Fairy" tattoo on his back who saved her with his life seven years ago when she was fighting against the Tower of Paradise.
"Grandpa Rob, I am now free."
"But Gerald, he…"
"He brought this upon himself."
A sudden sound came from the balcony, interrupting the girl's mutterings.
Looking at the white-haired boy, Erza said irritably, "Why didn't you use the main entrance?"
Noah shrugged, feigning innocence. "Well, I don't have a key. I'm not going to use force to unlock it like some people do."
Erza pouted; Noah's antics had instantly dispelled much of her gloomy mood.
This was Noah's first time entering Erza's dormitory. He looked around the girl's room with great curiosity. After being forcibly invaded by Erza so many times, he had learned to imitate her.
Erza didn't mind Noah's rude behavior at all; she was just curious about what this shut-in was doing coming to see her so late at night.
Noah's answer was only four words.
Tower of Paradise.
Erza paused, then lowered her head again. "Are you asking about my relationship with Jellal?"
"No, I already know from him about you and Gerald rebelling against the Tower of Paradise guards."
Noah pulled up a chair and sat down next to Erza, telling her about how he had Warren use the "Telepathy" magic to read Geralt's mind.
On New Year's Eve, Noah celebrated Erza's birthday. He clearly remembered how Erza was moved to tears, because she only cried from her left eye.
Noah was slightly suspicious at the time but didn't think much of it until today, during Gerald's interrogation, when Warren revealed Erza's past through mind reading.
Erza's right eye was permanently damaged and died seven years ago when she rebelled against the guardians of the Tower of Paradise.
Her right eye now is probably a magical prosthetic eye that she got after joining Fairy Tail.
Looking at the silent girl, Noah suddenly felt a pang of heartache for her.
Even after suffering immense torment, the girl, encouraged by her companions, continued to lead the enslaved people in their rebellion against the guards of the Tower of Paradise.
After a fierce battle, the girl succeeded, but of the two people who had encouraged her, one died saving her, and the other fell into endless darkness.
She must be feeling terrible too...
Noah didn't know how to comfort her, but he understood that the Tower of Paradise was a knot in the girl's heart, and only the one who tied the knot could untie it, so the boy spoke up.
"Erza, did you know that Jellal is continuing to build that tower? It's almost finished now."
"Wh...what!"
