Chapter 57 - Chapter 57 Anya, My Sister!

The next day.

Monday.

Hawke, who had taken leave early last Friday, got up early again, but instead of heading straight to Calvin Cemetery in Grandal, he carried the five Chitauri alien weapons in a golf bag he had bought the previous afternoon and took a taxi to a burrito shop not far from an orphanage.

The shop owner was a genuine Mexican who seemed to recognize Hawke and appeared somewhat surprised upon seeing him.

"Hawk..."

But the owner quickly recovered: "Is it the tenth?"

Hawke nodded, took out the change he had prepared beforehand, and handed it over.

The owner took the change and said, "Please wait a moment."

A little while later, two freshly made burritos were packed up.

Hawke took them, thanked him, and then turned and left with his golf bag on his back.

About an hour later.

Hawke walked around the neighborhood with his golf bag, then, clutching the dozen or so extra packing bags in his hand, hailed a taxi and headed to Calvin Cemetery.

Spanning Brooklyn and Queens, Calvin Cemetery was established in 1849, making it an old and established cemetery.

Logically, after so many years, Calvin Cemetery should have been overflowing with people.

And indeed it was. However, in 1984, Calvin Cemetery experienced a turning point.

It was acquired from the New York City government.

Yes, Calvin Cemetery became privatized. Because of this, the privatized Calvin Cemetery underwent a cleanup, and after only three months, it announced its reopening to the public, this time with plenty of burial plots.

Don't ask why it was suddenly empty.

Anyway, after Calvin Cemetery announced its reopening, there were no protests or objections.

Moreover, to adapt to the needs of the times, Calvin Cemetery not only specially designated a scenic, north-facing burial plot for East Asian residents, but also accepted government-funded burial projects.

By the time Hawke arrived at Calvin Cemetery, it was already nine o'clock in the morning.

The cemetery guard checked the documents Hawke handed him, glanced curiously at the golf bag on his back, but didn't check anything further before letting him through.

Calvin Cemetery is quite large, spanning two sections.

Having been here many times and knowing the area well, Hawke walked along the cemetery path for about fifteen minutes until he reached a small tombstone.

A photograph was pasted on the tombstone; it showed a sweet-smiling little girl.

Her name was written on it:

Anya.

1995.5.20-2009.9.10 .

Hawke took off the golf bag, which contained five alien weapons, and casually placed it aside.

Then, he knelt down in front of the tombstone and carefully placed the takeout bag containing various foods he was carrying on the small platform in front of the tombstone.

He then looked up at the sweet-smiling photograph on the tombstone.

He didn't speak, just stared quietly, then at the smiling face in the photograph, a slow smile creeping onto his own.

It was the same happy smile he'd show when he first saw the photo on his bedside table that morning.

A moment later,Hawke took his phone out of his pocket—which he'd switched off to avoid being disturbed—and placed it aside.

He turned and leaned against the tombstone behind him, gazing at the scenery.

If you looked further away, you'd see that Hawke's figure seemed to be close to the photo on the tombstone, both looking in the same direction, as if they were admiring the view together.

And if you looked even further away…

Midtown High School.

"Gwen, do you know where Hawke went?"

"Uh…"

Gwen, who was just about to put her backpack in her locker and head to class, paused slightly when she received a call from her counselor, Mrs. Snow.

"Didn't he ask you for leave?"

"I know, but I just got a call from NYU. They're coming to the school today."

"…For Hawke?"

"Yes, but I can't get in touch with Hawke. God, it was one thing if I couldn't reach him without a cell phone, but now that he has one, it's switched off."

Mrs. Snow said somewhat exasperatedly on the phone; it would have been better if he didn't have a cell phone at all.

"I think he might have told you, so do you know where he went?"

"Uh…"

Gwen hesitated.

She roughly knew where Hawke was today, but she wasn't sure if Hawke wanted her to know.

"The people from NYU will be here today to finalize the list. It would be such a shame if Hawke didn't come."

"Okay."

Gwen, hearing this, remembered that Hawke was indeed preparing for NYU, and that he might miss this opportunity if he didn't come today.

Therefore, she no longer hesitated and nodded: "Mrs. Snow, I'll go find Hawke now, but I might need to ask for leave."

Mrs. Snow breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this.

"No problem."

After hanging up the phone, Mrs. Snow shook her head, then seemed to think of something and couldn't help but chuckle.

Sure enough.

It had to be Gwen.

On the other end of the line, after hanging up the phone, Gwen put her books back in her locker, took out her backpack, closed the locker door, went to the parking lot, got into her yellow Corolla, started the car, and left the school.

Gwen headed straight for Calvin Cemetery.

When she arrived at the cemetery gate, parked her car, found the gatekeeper, and explained her purpose.

The cemetery staff readily opened the gate.

Gwen, seemingly familiar with the area, followed the path to a corner.

Turning the corner, she saw Hawke, one leg outstretched, the other bent, his left hand dangling on his knee, leaning against a tombstone.

Hawke, lost in thought, heard the approaching footsteps and focused his gaze, turning to look at Gwen who was cautiously walking towards him.

Gwen, seeing Hawke smile upon noticing her, breathed a sigh of relief and approached.

She didn't immediately explain why she had come to find Hawke, but instead focused her gaze on the tombstone, on the girl in the photograph on Hawke's bedside table, then glanced at Hawke leaning against the tombstone, her voice soft: "Could you introduce her to me?"

Hawke smiled slightly, glancing at the photograph on the tombstone with gentle eyes.

"Anya."

"I..."

"My sister!"
